Default LEOSA qualification yesterday

St. Louis County Police Department hosts this four times a year for their retirees and the feds. Shoot from the 5, 7, 10, and 15 at a B27E, only hits in the 8 ring and closer count. Thought I was going to die a couple times courtesy of the fella's on my right and left who were unfamiliar with the manual of arms on their Beretta 92 and Smith third gen single stack compact. Won the cool gun of the day award with my H&K P7. Threw one out with my non-dominant hand. Good day overall . . .

Way to go, Muss!! I'm waiting for my Department to call me with a date. They usually try to get the hottest and coldest days of the year, to see if any of us old timers pass out. (Just kidding, they are really supportive of retirees.).

Best Regards, Les

Default Congrats!

Congrats! The department I retired from stopped qualifying their retirees, so now I have to pay a State Certified Instructor. I'm due in October. No big deal, know they have the right to refuse, but think the department should still do it.

Our Sheriff's Office gives us 3 hours a year on one day to quality. No complaints, they don't have to do it at all.

I guess this is (currently) one area where I'm very fortunate.

The lieutenant that runs the range for our sheriff's office has pretty much told me to come down any Wednesday I want to either qualify or shoot with his deputies. All I need is to give him a couple days notice in case a situation arises on their end.

I wrote a long "attaboy" letter to the sheriff letting him know just how much I appreciated the openness and kindness I was shown by the lieutenant as well as his deputies. The sheriff wrote back a cordial letter of his own.

Untimed. 50 rounds . . .

Five yards: From ready gun, 6 rounds non dominant, holster, on command, six rounds dominant, all one handed.

Seven yards: 7 rounds, holster, on command, 7 rounds

Ten yards: 12 rounds

15 yards: 12 rounds

B27E, nothing outside the 8 counts . . .

Since it's untimed, nobody gives a snot about how many rounds your pistol holds. I just kept my four eight round mags full from the pocket and changed as necessary . . .

Did mine last May with my first gen G 17, 48 round course of fire from 3 to 25 yds with timed stages. Had similar experiences & concerns with a shooter on my left. Our SD conducts the qual.

Did mine back in June or early July. We do quarterly shoots, so all one has to do is show up at a Qual or Range Day and shoot the course. It was nice to visit with the few guys left who I worked with.

They never mentioned it that I can recall. I think I heard from some of the guys that shot in April that it was 75% in the 8. Couple fella's I saw were probably close to that, but they were shooting small frame, small caliber semi's. Range guy just walked down the line as we were picking up brass and said "Pass, Pass, Pass, Pass, . . . . "

As it should be. If you can handle your gun safely and get the bullets to go in the general direction of the target (enough to keep it on paper), that's good enough for me.

I completely agree. My dad was a retired LEO and he completed his last LEOSA qualification seated on his walker about 6 months before he died . . .

Can someone tell a non LEO how big the "8" ring is?
I have long been curious about if I could qualify myself.

Best,
Rick

" Thought I was going to die a couple times courtesy of the fella's on my right and left who were unfamiliar with the manual of arms on their Beretta 92 and Smith third gen single stack compact."

I was an international police officer in Kosovo in 2002-2004. We had US police officers from all over the country and the territories. The issue firearm was the Beretta 92. It was obvious that not everyone was familiar with it. While serving as a range instructor during a qualification, I looked over and saw an officer wearing his 9mm with the hammer cocked!!! I eased over and had him de-cock. When asked, he told me that he had carried a Glock at his home agency in CA and had never carried a SA/DA semi-auto.

Saw the same thing in Afghanistan, only this time it was a South African security officer.

This is a B27, coutldn't find an image of a B27E. The difference is that the B27E leaves out the 7 ring. You'll notice the little icon in the corner, which scores everything inside the 8 as a 5 . . . .

Here's a B-27E:

This is a standard B-27:

They both have the 7 ring, but the "E" is just a little bit shorter. I use the B-27E in my classes. It's still a huge target.

The 8 ring is 12" wide by 17 3/4" tall.

Just did mine Friday with one of the local departments. I used my surplus 6906 that I picked up earlier this year. Got the "Passed" so I'm good to go. Just need to send the form with a $20 money order to the Highway Patrol on Monday. AZ has a standard police qualification course of 50 rounds plus a couple shoot-don't shoot scenarios that were done on the MILO system. Awesome hospitality from the locals, by the way.

Depends on how far "up" upstate is--and whether the guy running the line can keep it moving!

I expect to be shooting outside clear through January, but I know the higher elevations get bitterly cold early. Even when the sun shines and the wind's not blowing, you get that deep cold that just eats through your boots.

Thanks Muss and Rastoff for posting all this. Most interesting. I used to try to talk my Security Police friends into letting me qualify (back when DoD used American-made side arms). Told them I'd bring my own 1911A1 (1937 CG model) and ammo. "No," because my career field didn't have a "requirement" for handguns.

Now I use 7" pie plates on my home-built course. Guess I shouldn't be so hard on myself when I "fly" 1 out of 25 rounds from my 10-yard line with my M&P 340 or 640 Pro.
