IMO ported barrels do nothing except increase muzzle blast and diminish vision in low light situations. I would totally avoid them particularly in a defensive firearm.

I feel the smarter choice is to get the orginal 9mm shield with tritium night sights would be the best way to go here. Especially for a older female for self defense.

My opinion is the same as the two already given.
Age and gender do not change my opinion.
Best of luck!

Question.... If you buy a 9mm orginal shield can they put the tritium night sights on the shield or do I need to look for one that already has them?

I have a nicely customized 3" Model 65 ....... in the mid-80s one of the hot features was to port short barrels.... in retrospect the only thing I wish I hadn't done was mag-na-port the barrel........ I carry mostly +P.38s and there isn't pressure to make the ports work.... just flash and blast,

A gun only needs two holes in the barrel. A hole at one end to place the loaded cartridge and a hole at the other for the bullet to exit. Any more holes than two have ruined a good barrel. Larry

Take a ported weapon and hold it at your side or close to your body and pull the trigger. NO-- DON'T!!!!!!!! Absolutely no porting on concealed carry, IMO

I don't know of a single reputable instructor that recommends porting on a self-defense handgun, so I'd get the regular model.
I'd also skip the night sites WILSON DEFENSE JOURNAL: Sights-What and Why? Gabe Suarez and Rob Pincus

I wouldn't have a gun with a ported barrel for any reason.

I have a ported 629 4 inch barrel and enjoy it. However, I would never recommend a ported barrel for personal carry/defense. Just find the handgun you like the best, buy it, shoot it, and become very familiar with it. The more comfortable you are with your handgun, the more confident and practical you are in times of stress.

Thank you all for the help. I just went and picked up my new 9mm shield with tritium night sights and no safety for $479.99. The orginal shield was $422 so I'm happy about my decision.
