Installed Meprolight's on my H&K, and thought they were a marked improvement over Trijicon, which surprised me.

I have the Ameriglo SW-345's Pro i-Dot's on my Shield. Not sure if the 45 takes the same sights or not. ameriglo.com

Trijicon, they outlast the others by a considerable margin. IIRC, they make the S&W factory sights. If you want to go cheap, Brownells sells the factory sights separately. Just get the front sight. If you're relying on the sights and you think you need the rear sights, you're probably better off running.

How were you able to determine that?

My Shields will get Trijicon HD sights one of these days. My old eye appreciate the large U notch and big dot with plenty of light either side of the front sight blade. I don't need my reading glasses to shoot well with the HDs.
As to the night sight part of the Trijicons or other makes. I have feeling in reality in a close quarters gun fight, night or day; I better be able to point shoot fast a quick before sights come into play even in the dark. I guess Really I'm just not sure night sights are all that important.

Which ones would I get? Trijicon Bright & Toughs.
I would rather have a small and powerful flashlight rather than nights sights if I could not have both, though. JMO.

XS Big Dot sights...... it is all I use on my .45 Commander. They will soon be on my revamped EDC 19-4 snub.

I've been using Trijicons for years. No problems.

I've used both Meprolight and Trijicon night sights on pistols. Both are well made (of steel). Neither makes sights for everything, but between the two, you can outfit almost any pistol or revolver.
Meprolight Sights are brighter and appear larger in the dark. They also have a wider white border, which makes them easier to use in good light against dark backgrounds. The tritium cells seem to have a dark center, to my eyes anyway.
Trijicon cells are very small, almost pinpricks, but bright. The area around the cells is smaller, which some people find less distracting.
Trijicon HD sights are well worth consideration for a defensive handgun. The front cell has a large, phosphoresent surround, green, yellow or orange, which enhances quick visual acquisition. It continues to glow for up to 10 minutes after exposure to bright light, intended for enhanced "entry operation" performance. The rear blade has tritum cells without any "distracting" surrounds, and a large, U-shaped notch.

How well can you see three dot sights? That question should tell you which type of sights to get.
If you can still see them well then go with Truglo TFX or TFX Pro sights. You get the best of both worlds for daylight and low light use.
TRUGLO(R) | Firearms | Handgun
If not go with Ameriglo Pro I Dot or Trijicon HD.

Trijicon must use special tritium that has an extra-long half life, eh?
