No, this is an excuse. If you don't want to practice, fine. Just don't fool yourself that you have no time. Everyone has a few minutes. The fact that you've read this is proof of that.

You don't have to justify yourself to us. I'm not calling you deficient or anything like that. I merely pointed out a simple way to get in plenty of practice that can be done at home safely and without expense. Sure, I mentioned doing it every day, but even once a week is better than most. In fact, just once a month is better than 90% of those carrying.

Here's another way:
You take your gun out of the holster every day, right? Well why not get some practice at least with that one presentation? Rather than just pulling it out, present it with purpose, from concealment.

If I don't have to justify myself to you then why push the issue?

When it comes to training and practice you always like to assert yourself over what you think is best.

Man to man, if I tell you that I don't need to practice what YOU think I should, believe me and let it go.

This thread was about night sights. RIGHT?

Generations of men and women have and will continue to defend themselves without having to commit themselves to a training regimen that others think is mandatory.

I've been in enough low light situations with weapon drawn in my 21 years in law enforcement that I prefer to have them. They're just one of many tools I have available to help me get home safe after each shift.

I'm sorry. It wasn't intended as an attack on you.

Yes, I'm always going to assert that practice is a good thing. I was just pointing out that some practice can be had without committing to a lot of time or money.

This also goes toward the concept of night sights. I used to think that night sights were a necessity on a defensive pistol. This is no longer a hard and fast rule with me. I believe they do have value, but I don't see it as a necessary expenditure.

Default I'll take any edge I can get ...

I prefer nite sights on my defensive weapons. I also like lasers and very much like reflex red dots when I can have them.

As over 70% of home invasions, muggings, and similar attacks occur in darkness I find them a useful addition on any handgun used for home / personal defense.

No amount of instinctive aiming will give you the precision of a properly aligned sight picture. Without that you are just throwing rocks.

Some people are very good at throwing rocks, and for that instant encounter inside 20' I'll throw a couple as I bring my weapon up for sight alignment, hoping to disable or stop the threat in the first two seconds.

If I miss at that point I'll just consider that a warning shot, or disorienting gunfire to prevent an accurate aimed shot from coming my way. If I'm still in the game my third shot will be with proper sight alignment into a vital area.

Lasers are another crutch I'll be happy to use when the chips are down and in some cases can be a deterrent to all but the most determined attacker.

Putting a red dot on a handgun or long gun makes for a great aiming aid, useful day or night, especially for longer shots.

So do you need nite sights, a laser, or a red dot? No you don't, but if you feel they give you an edge then by all means go for it.

They don't supplant training and practice, but combined with a continuing schedule of preparedness they can give you an edge when you need it most.

[QUOTE=Rastoff;139377386]In the past, I have been a proponent of night sights. The idea is that you can pick up your sights quickly when the light is low. However, I've been putting some thought into this. If there is enough light to be sure of your target, there should be enough to see the sights well enough.

I can see the white dots on my sights easily enough, even in low light. That is not to say night sights don't have value. If they make it easier to see, that's good. I'm just not sure they're necessary.

What do you think?[/

Id rather have them and not need them rather than the other way around. Even if you just had a front night sight , that's better than nothing....

Been there. Done that, won. Night sights saved my skin. When I used to carry a revolver I used my flashlight a lot more than I ever did after we moved to semiautos with night sights. I swear by them. Also, as I get older, it gets harder to pick up a front sight in the dark. I don't do building searches any more, but when I did, I sure would have liked that orange trijicon front sight for point-n-shoot.

I have night sights on about half of my pistols a couple of my older pistols never had night sights as they did not have them at that time ..

I like night sights and can see where they might be very helpful .. the way my bedroom is in the house I can stand behind double wide doors unseen in a very dark room the only light down the hall and around the corner where it doesn't direct light down the hall but does back light anyone walking toward the bedroom .. walking toward the bedroom all one would see is a very dark void on the other side of a open double wide door way ..

From inside the bedroom you can't see the front sights on the pistols without night sights but light up where they can be used in the ones with them .. so any instance of shooting from shadow into bright light they may be very helpful !! usually order them stock on the model of gun I buying .. and will likely put them on future pistols if not supplied stock ..

both of my carry guns have night sights as well as my bug ..

With modern small light attachments, you really don't need them if you have the light attachments

I had one of the first Sig P228 autos in the U.S. I was in my early 30s with 20/12 eyesight.
I worked for a high-threat security firm that trained us under many circumstances, including varying degrees of low light into complete darkness.
As others here have said, shooting at a target that cannot be identified is a no-no. Night sights don't help much with that for the obvious reason that they do not illuminate the target.

In low light when it might not be possible to identify a target, it was possible to keep the sights IN sight and aligned while holding the gun out of alignment with my eyes, such as low ready. I was able to bring the gun into alignment quicker that way, and it significantly reduced the time to get on the target when it could be identified.

I am certain they aided alignment in low light as compared to black sights or even white dot sights.

I subsequently installed them on any carry/duty gun I owned or that was issued to me.

I consider them well worth the money.
