So You Don't Believe It Happens Here !!!
Won't happen here !! I have heard those words many times living here in a sleepy bedroom community where the worst thing that seems to happens is kids being reported for playing basketball in the street ..
Well it does happen .. and it happens every where .. Always be prepared !! this happened just 4 miles from me in the next town over ..
Man and woman breaks into home at 2 am .. man commands BG to get on the floor several times before shooting him when he refuses his orders !!
Sunnyland homeowner shoots intruder on Christmas morning - News - Journal Star - Peoria, IL
Sunnyland homeowner shoots intruder on Christmas morning | Peoria Journal Star
Tells police just a wrong house but he had torn a burner out of the oven and had it in his hand as a weapon ..

My wife's sister lives in Rhode Island with her husband, two kids, and her aunt. They don't believe in guns, and do not own any. They think they live in the "little house on the prairie", where nothing bad will ever happen. They should know better, as their son is a guard at the state prison! They don't even lock their doors, and leave the garage door open all night.
The wife and I can't tell them anything! There are a lot of people that still think they're invincible! I don't get it.

From the article: "Since July, Casey Rice has been on parole from the Illinois Department of Corrections after serving about half of a nine-year prison term from a 2012 guilty plea to a count of aggravated battery in Tazewell County. On Dec. 28, 2011, he entered Herget National Bank, 2201 E. Broadway, and demanded money from a teller. He implied he had a weapon but didn't display one. He left with $1,250 but was caught two days later in Pekin.
Rice had been free only 12 days before the robbery, after completing a 76-day jail term for possessing a hypodermic syringe. He had spent most of the past seven years in prison on several felony convictions in Peoria and Tazewell counties, including possessing a controlled substance, battery and forgery."
Rice is what I like to call a frequent flyer. It's a shame, but he'll be back.

Yeah, wouldn't you think "kitchen knife" when in the kitchen? Maybe look for a meat cleaver? Even a frying pan would make more sense ...

He encountered the woman as he opened the bedroom door he had seen the shadow of her shoes under the door because of the Christmas Tree lights that were shining behind her .. he pushed her down to the ground and controlled her when he saw the guy in the shadows heading toward the door he had just went through .. He gave the guy multiple warnings as he moved toward the bedroom door and his girlfriend and with the guy having a weapon in his hand many others might have shot much sooner and with multiple rounds ..
He only fired one time which I think was because after he pushed the woman down and controlled her the guy headed toward the bedroom where his girlfriend was and she might have been in line of fire if he would have fired more then the one time he did ..

Shot the intruder with a .357 Magnum. 1 shot, winged him, not killing him.
What a pity!

Even if they were....
Even if they were drunk/drugged up and mistaken, but I don't think that they were there for any good purpose.
The guy trying to get in the room and ignoring the gun on him would be enough for me, too. He is very lucky not to be dead. I wonder if the homeowner took a chance and 'winged' him before taking REALLY drastic action. The .357 probably stopped him cold but I don't plan on pulling the trigger just once.

"Even if they were drunk/drugged up and mistaken, but I don't think that they were there for any good purpose."
This.
And the fact that the female intruders calls the homeowner a "psychotic *******" would seem to indicate that the BG's relative is lucky they picked the wrong house.
I'm guessing that young Casey spends no more than 3 years as a guest of the State as a result.
I'm glad the homeowner and his lady friend were not injured. I hope he has good insurance.

And a FOID card. That's a " Firearms Owner Identification card" to all of you who live in Free States.
I keep my old one to remind me of why I left Illinois.

Maybe his wife, having watched too many old gangster movies, yelled to him "Grab a heater!" and that's what the moron came up with.

In Illinois unlike other states that leave it up to the courts In Illinois if it is justified you can't be sued its written in our law !! No charges will be filed against him was a statement issued by the Illinois State Police as it was a justified shooting !! Thus the BG's are unable to sue anyone !!
They have no way to sue him !!

It's Illinois. The home owner will be put on trial for shooting the BG if the local DA is anti 2A. Does the home owner have a FOID?... Why didn't he retreat?. BAC level? Is the weapon registered with the state?
The only thing the home owner has going is he is in Central Ill.
The bad guy will plea out to time served, maybe 6 months.

The are some law suits trying to eliminate that card .. not sure how far they have proceed thru the court system as yet ..
They have passed a ruling/law where if you carry your conceal carry license you don't need to carry or show your FOID Card as the numbers for both are the same .. you can show the FOID Card either/or the Conceal Carry License now to buy ammo !!
But you must carry your Conceal Carry License if you are carrying your firearm your FOID Card won't work ..

Not likely .. no need to retreat no registration for guns in Illinois .. doubt if he was tested for BAC .. doesn't matter what the DA thinks .. we have a pretty good AG who probably won't plea out the guy since his record is so extensive ..
So everything you say is unlikely to happen .. but thinks for injecting what you think will happen with out knowing any of the particulars !!
Thanks for your comment !!

No problem. I was born in and lived in Chicago until 4 years ago. Glad to hear the state is going pro 2A. About time.
Just wish my Missouri CCW was recognized in ILL.
Would visit more.

One shot, and he hit the guy and effected a stop. At 2AM. With the guy wielding a deadly weapon. Bad guys also do this crazy thing--they move. Targets on the range don't.
Dunno, sounds like he did pretty good. At the end of the day, it's 1-zip for the good guys.

I live in the middle of the sticks in Ga. Lock all my doors and keep assorted firearms handy in home and carry. It can happen anywhere. My in-laws live in town and never lock doors. They believe it will never happen to them. No situational awareness. They should have victim tattooed on their foreheads.

In TEXAS, the best ID card to carry is your CHL.
That's Concealed Handgun License.
Looks just like your Texas Driver's license.
I carry them together, back to back.

Home invasion fail
Deputy Sheriff buddy was sitting quietly reading at home alone, and a door opened in another room. He confronted a tweeker who immediatly raised hands, said "I'm leavin' I'm leavin', turned, opened a door and stepped into the half bath! A minute passed and the goof knocked on the door and asked could he please come out.
The Deputy opened the door a little, tossed in a pair of cuffs. The goof then came out with the cuffs on.
Wonder why they call it dope?

After drinking Christmas Eve with friends and family, they walked to the Stahl Avenue home, thinking it was the residence of a relative - who lives three blocks away.

I am not necessarily going to discount this part - something similar happened to a friend of mine once, (someone did, in fact enter his house mistakenly - but left quickly) HOWEVER - the rules change when they become aggressive, pick up heavy objects, advance on the homeowner etc. then all 'reasons' are out the door. Good on the homeowner. I just hope the 'mistaken house' possibility doesn't become a defense and influence an issue of 'intent'.

Since the first thing the Perp did after entering the house was tear off a burner from the oven to use as a weapon I would have to discount the theory that they entered the house accidently and thought it was a friends home !!

That's kind of what I ask my wife when she asked me why I carried in the house.

You might want to rethink this snarky comment:

He fired just one round, into Casey Rice's left shoulder, all the while pinning Jordan Rice to the ground.

He's pinning a struggling person to the ground and still manages to get a shot off that hits the perpetrator with very low light conditions. Pretty good shooting if you ask me.
Also, for those that are wondering about the bad guy's choice of weapon, I don't think it's that unreasonable. The cast iron pieces that go over the burner on the stove just lift up. It's not unreasonable that he just grabbed the first thing that came to hand. Sure, it's not the best tool, but it's something and still a deadly weapon to me so, that just makes the shoot more justified.
Also, I don't know what the laws are in IL, but here in CA it doesn't matter if it was a drunken mistake. The law here says that the homeowner is presumed to be in fear of death or great bodily harm if someone forces their way into your home.
The door on this guy's house was locked, right?
