Doing business or shopping in town if I am just carrying my Sig P238 (6+1) I've got an extra mag on me somewhere .. if I'm carrying my Beretta Px4 (17+1) or my S&W Compact in 40 (15 + 1) not so much unless we are traveling ..

And if we are traveling there is always one in the console and one on my off side .. and sometimes a bug according to how I'm dressed ..

I just use a sun glass case hooked to my belt. The one I have has a velcro flap and I can get 2 9mm double stack mags in it. I just wear it out in the open and I doubt that anybody thinks it's anything but a sun glass case. Plus, it's CHEAP !

I always carry one extra magazine on my person regardless of capacity. If I have to clear a malfunction, I want a fresh magazine. I don't want to reinsert the same magazine that was involved with the malfunction I had to clear. It might be a bad magazine.

Concers about magazine malfunctions are silly.

Obviously, you should test your mags and your guns.

I have.

Never had a mag failure in a mag I've tested: which is all my mags.

They all work, all the time.

Wouldn't use one that didn't.

You need to be confident in your exuipment.

If you don't , lots of iterations are possible.

Most folks can't carry or reasonably use all those iterations .

If you are 100% confident your firearm, magazine and ammunition will never fail, don't carry an extra magazine.

I've had what appeared to be good equipment fail during training. Thank Heaven it did not happen while I was working in the field.

When I CCW in a shoulder holster, I will have with 1 or 2 extra magazines depending on the holster. When I CCW a revolver in a shoulder holster, I have an extra 12 rounds as well.
I may not need the extra ammo, but it evens out the weight distribution a little.

Wow, I didn't see a single argument here and then this?

Sounds like someone doesn't assess the situation before they jump in. I sure hope you don't carry a gun with that attitude.

At least one reload, semi or revolver. More in my vehicle.

What's it going to hurt?

No, they're not. What is silly is to believe that there's no possibility of a malfunction.

All mechanical devices have the potential to fail. Some are super reliable, but nothing is 100%. I've seen forks fail.

When talking about magazines, they do indeed fail. Spend enough time at competitions or training and you'll see many fail. That's life. Springs, followers, feed lips, base plates, I've seen malfunctions from every one of those things.

Watched a guy step up for a stage at a USPSA match once. He loaded his gun and reholstered. At the beep, he drew and as he fired the first shot, the base plate on his mag failed and dumped all the rounds on the ground. He reloaded and finished the stage. Because he practiced for malfunctions, he lost a little time, but was still in the game. It was actually fun to watch.

So, you didn't need a spare magazine, right?

Interestingly enough I recently read a similar thread on pistol forum.com and in 4 pages the response was monolithic in favor of carrying a spare magazine.

I also noticed that they didn't frame it as carrying more ammunition in case you run out. They framed it as carrying a spare magazine in case of a malfunction.

I take your point, WR, but you probably should have read all of my posts in this thread before making me look to be a helpless lamb.

BTW, while Pittsburgh is certainly a locale I have great respect for, I think there's a slight difference between our courthouse and the one in Pittsburgh...not to mention the street gangs:

Sorry for the end of Holidays rant..........I swear this topic has been covered at least 187 times in the 11 years I've been here....ya we all like to help out the "new guy".........but I saw the beginnings of the thread digressing into name calling ............ one guy is "silly" to worry about his magazines" another is a "helpless lamb" inappropriately " snuggly" in believing where he lives is safe.....

There are a number of topics that have no "right" answer..... IMHO this is one of them.... no one ever convinces anyone to change their practices......and they seem to slip into name calling and; back and forth "I'm right and you are wrong!" posts.

Lets just supply the new guy with information so he can make his choice.

Now on to the big questions....... 9mm or .45 and is the .40 dead!!!

If I am carrying a revolver I typically have just the 6 in the cylinder and a full magazine if I am carrying my 1911. If I need more then a cylinder or a magazine full I don't need more ammo, I need help.

To answer the question: Yes I carry a spare mag in my weak hand side pocket in a DeSantis Nemesis pocket mag holder. This keeps the mag placed at a roughly 45 degree angle to the opening in the pocket and is quick to use, and inexpensive to own.

Ayoob has never fired a round in self defense. Doesn't mean he's not well read and a good writer and speaker. . .

But that doesn't really set him apart from a lot of well respected instructors and people that are considered experts in the field. Oleg Volk has never drawn a gun in self defense either, neither has Tamara Keel.
And don't forget the guru of all gun gurus David Grossman

It doesn't, but then again, I didn't say that it did. Overly sensitive people may have taken it that way. He has also never served as a paid police officer, but that doesn't make a bad person either. Also as I said, he is well read . . .

OK, then how does not firing in self-defense eliminate one from being a valuable source of knowledge or instruction?

You didn't say that either, but it was implied by your comment about Mr. Ayoob.

I didn't imply anything. I stated a fact. You inferred from my statement. That is on you . . .

Edit: I said he was well read.

If there was no intention of implying anything then what was the purpose of injecting your comment?

The context of your comment when following the statement that it did would lead any rational person to presume you were in disagreement.

Not at all. I followed up with "Doesn't mean he's not well read and a good writer and speaker . . ."

Never heard of the first two, but that doesn't mean much. I've met Grossman a couple times. Gave me a free book . . .

Wasn't my intent, I was expanding on the points you made later in the post. Sorry if you took it that way Chief.

And for those who might think the cop on the corner rode to the rescue, WRONG! If that was sarcasm, attaboy. I like to think the two youngsters may have been scared straight.

Got this universal mag holder. Holds all mags securely. I always use it when carrying a semi-auto.
