Default A sobering New Year's Day reminder

Not a note/post I thought I'd start 2017 on, but to all the fellow 'good' guys out there, civilians and LEO alike, my fiancee and I had a reminder of sorts today that Teddy Roosevelt's advice of "...walk softly and carry a big stick." applies now as much as ever.

I refrain from details as the matter has only occurred a few hours ago and I expect to need to file at least one more report, even though it was peacefully de-escalated in the end, but be safe out there folks. Even in the best parts of any town or city in broad daylight things can and do happen, and tonight I'm going to bed grateful to my maker and Mr. Glock both that she and I are both home safe and healthy in this new year.

Best to all, and a happy new year to everyone.

I'm very glad to hear you and your fiance are OK.

I'm sure you have some decompression to do as well. When you can, please give us an outline of what happened. It helps us all get better.

I was mugged on NYE, 1999. It took me til about 5am to get my wits about me. It was a sobering experience, and really the first time I realized what effect adrenaline has on your actions and decision making.

I was involved in two attempted muggings as the 'victim' when still in college, not long after hurricane Katrina. Neither incident involved firearms fortunately, however one resulted in a broken nose and another in a tetanus shot for a good cut across the back of my hand. Those were somewhat foolhardy incidents, young and walking alone well after dark in less than great sections of my then current city.

The other day was altogether different, and in some measure very strange, although I actually attribute those old mugging incidents in part to staying calm during the issue. While parking in the middle of the day in a very high end retail area of the city I turned to find a well dressed but disoriented looking/enraged young man, early to mid 20s, walking up to my then-down driver's window, cursing loudly and making various gestures at me. Apparently, from what I could understand (curses aside, he seemed to be slurring), he thought I had 'stolen' the parking spot from him. Having learned since my youth to just avoid trouble when possible I started to simply offer him the spot, no hard feelings, when he reached into the car attempting to swing at my face. An older woman, no idea if any relation, was shouting at him to calm down, but after missing a solid hit on my face he leaned out of the car and reached for his right jacket pocket; before he could pull whatever it was out however he looked up to see myself calmly sitting with my usual car gun, a Glock 19, not aimed in any way nor finger on the trigger, simply firmly held well within the car, at which point I attempted to explain that if he tried to enter our vehicle or touch either of us (my fiancee being in the passenger seat at the time) again he would at the least be going to jail. On seeing this he rapidly ran/staggered away, still cursing, with the woman trailing after him, probably towards whatever vehicle he or they had been in. We left the area immediately and reported the incident, although I don't expect anything to come of it.

All in all, a strange way to begin the new year, to say the least, and an excellent reminder that when one can be armed, one should be armed.

Stay safe my friends, and again, may we all have a wonderful 2017.

Excellent advice. I'm glad to hear you're both O.K.

I'm planning a trip to Quartzite, later this month. I was just formulating logistics for carrying...

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for posting that follow up. I think you handled that well in every aspect. From offering to diffuse the situation by giving up the space to reporting the situation afterward. Well done.

May I use your story in my CCW class?

The fact that you both are home safe tells me you handled the situation perfectly. Had you not had your firearm handy this could have been a very different story. A good reminder for all of us to always be vigilant, hope for the best, prepare for the worst. Glad you are both fine.

Here are some things I got from it:
  • He was aware of the threat. Most people are so oblivious to their surroundings, they are attacked before they notice there's even a potential threat.
  • He tried to de-escalate the situation by offering to move.
  • He didn't bring the gun into play until there was an obvious move, i.e. putting his hand in his pocket.
  • He didn't overtly threaten him with the gun, but made it obvious that he had one and was ready to use it.
  • He took the proper action at the end. Even though he had apparently resolved the situation, he left. AND, even though he didn't discharge the gun, he called the police to report the situation.

In every situation where a gun is used, there will be debatable points. I'm sure some will see things I haven't, but I'm impressed with this. I wish all self-defense situations went this well. Of course I wish they're never necessary, but if you have to do something, this was a good outcome.
