I would use what ever I could find that has been stopping bad guys on the street. NYPD reports success with SGD135gr. 38+P. The 158gr. LHP 38+P has been known to do the job for decades. There are probably others but I haven't herd street results on any others in the last few years.

You are asking about the .357 Magnum, correct?
I shot at least a dozen different factory loads in both .357 Magnum and .38 Special in my M640 and the most accurate is the Winchester 145gr Silvertip magnum ammo. It's scary accurate in that revolver.

Thanks for that, someone who has shot .357 in a M 640.
Now, to find that ammo as I normally reload .357 and many other calibers.

Exactly the same ammunition I would shoot in any other .38 Special purchased from any other source! Whatever was appropriate to the situation and/or struck my mood! If it were a 640-1 then the same answer except .357 Magnum!

I shoot any number of 38 special rounds in my 640, but for self defense I load it with Underwood hard cast 158Gr 38 special+P ammo.

I always have carried Hormany Critical Defense 125gr. .357 Magnum factory loads in my M640.

Speer 135gr Gold Dot 357 magnums. I wish I could find some more because I'm down to one reload for my M640.

Until I switched to a .45, I used the Federal version.
