Default HOLSTER COMPATABILITY

Of course holsters made for S&W J Frames will fit Charter
Undercovers, several small Taurus revolvers, and others.
Despite what many of the gun magazine writers said when
Ruger's LCR first came out, the LCR will fit in a few J Frame
holsters, but not all by any means.

Holsters made for Ruger SP101 fit Colt's Agent, Detective Special, and Cobra.

Holsters made for full size Glocks like model 22 will also fit
SIG P220. Beretta's 92FS also fits fairly well but the barrel
is a tad bit longer.

K Frame S&W revolvers with adjustable rear sights
like model 15/67, model 19, etc. will fit holsters made
for Colt's Official Police, Python & other similar frame sizes.

Have you found compatability with other guns/holsters?

Not from personal experience, but I've often read that Hi-Powers will fit in 1911 Govt/Commander holsters.

On BHP 9mm this is quite true! On the BHP .40 they are very tight fitting , due to the increased slide thickness.
Randy

PS. Sig 239 holsters fit my 3913 like they were made for it!

I've got a Charter Arms 44 sp. 2.5". I needed an iwb for it. Called Alien Gear. The holster for the Ruger sp 101 was a perfect fit. Almost like it was made for the CA.

Ruger Security Six models will fit K frame Smith's.

When I bought my S.S in 72 it was so new on the market no holsters were available. Tried a couple companies K frame holsters and all was well. To this day when I carry my 4'' S.S. it rides in the old Safariland K frame holster I bought when I picked up my revolver!!

THIS MAY BE COMMON KNOWLEDGE TO MOST FORUM MEMBERS, BUT NEWBEES HAVE ASKED ME ABOUT THIS ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. I WILL POST THIS FOR THEIR BENEFIT......

YES, THE 6 SHOT 686 AND THE 7 SHOT 686 FIT IN THE SAME HOLSTER. THE CYLINDERS ARE THE SAME. THEY ARE JUST DRILLED DIFFERENTLY....

Back in the day when holsters were more of a "pouch" style, multiple models and brands would usually fit in a production line holster. Now days they are usually boned, made to tighter tolerances and designed for exact models and brands. IMHO I doubt that and modern generic holsters would be all that good at retention, ease of draw and quality.

Default Galco Shoulder rig - compatibility for S&W 6906

Found a used Galco rig at a gun show (no original packaging) with a sticker labeled "Sig P226." Slipped my 6906 into the holster and it fit very well.

Holster component was stamped "248."
2 Magazine component was stamped "SCL22."
(Above stamped numbers confirmed through Galco website for Sig P226 holster.)

Excellent compatibility with my early 6906 with square trigger guard.
Also perfect fit for my S&W 5904 w/ square trigger guard.

I have to disagree with you on that one. My LCR would not fit very well into my BlackHawk #4 pocket holster nor did it fit well in my Bianchi leather IWB designed for my J-Frame.

The LCR is actually a bit bulkier then a J-Frame and has a wider, thicker trigger guard. It's the LCR's trigger guard and the fat Hogue Tamer grips that makes the LCR incompatible with some holsters designed specifically for the J-Frame.

I have an Azula IWB holster specifically molded for the LCR. I prefer model specific holsters whenever possible over the "one size fits all" jobs, which I've found out through trial and error don't always "fit all".

FYI... the Desantis "Nemesis" pocket holster designed for the S&W BodyGuard .380acp with built in laser actually fits the Taurus TCP better then their model designed for the LCP, which DeSantis claims also fits the TCP.

Contrary to popular belief, the Taurus TCP and Ruger LCP are not exactly the same. The TCP has a wider, thicker trigger guard which fits into the dimensions of the S&W BG holster perfectly.

I owned all three pistols and both holsters so I know this to be a fact.

I said the LCR will fit a few J Frame holsters but not all.
I have the 2 Blackhawk Askins and Classic Berns-Martin
inspired holsters made for J Frames and my LCR .38 Spl.
fits just fine. Those are the few I was talking about.

K-frame speedloaders will also fit the Ruger Security Six revolvers as well. Also, K-frame speedloaders will also work on my Colt Detective Special.

I won an IWB Kydex holster Karma here for a Chiefs Special 45. One day I was cleaning some guns and I tried a M&P 40 FS in that holster. I clicked right in there like it was made for it. The barrel stuck out a little but it worked.

It's really holster specific.

For example, I have several 1911 holsters and some of them work fine with a 9mm Hi Power and others do not. For some of them the sticking point is the retention strap that won't accommodate the Hi Power's slightly different hammer location and slide width.

I have a couple of K frame holsters that will work fine with a 686, but again that's not universal. In general, it'll work better with an IWB holster where much of the retention comes from the pressure of the belt outside the holster than it will with an OWB holster where the retention often hinges largely on very snug blocking of the holster to the specific revolver.

Similarly, some K frame holsters work just fine with similar sized Ruger Speed/Security/Service Six revolvers and for the most part a J frame holster will work with a similar barrel length SP101.

I've also found my CZ75 Compact works fine with many leather Glock 19 holsters.

Sometimes. It depends on how much wiggle the speed loader allows. If it holds the cartridges very snug then it's a less than optimum fit in the slightly larger diameter Ruger cylinder.

Some brands have a lot of wiggle and others not so much.

Ahhh... I try holsters for guns other than what they're made for all the time.
I use a DeSantis Ruger SR9 holster for the 9 & 45 Shields, the 6906, 3913, and Kahr CM45. The adjustable screw makes it work.
My IWB G&G for the Glock 27 fits all of the above too.
I use Don Hume Sig P229 holsters for the 457 and 4516.
I found a Gazelle Leather holster with mag holder that fits a bunch of different stuff... all of the above plus 1911s.

My father had lots of holsters and guns, a leather stamping kit, and free time. While liquidating his collection, my brother and I found that Dad had stamped the model number of every pistol that would fit a particular holster on the back of the holster. Sometimes he ran out of room in a column . . .

Recent happy surprise a Milt Rosen holster OWB for a Sig 320 compact, will hold a S&W M&P 45c perfectly.

I had two Holsters made by Craft Holsters. One was a shoulder holster for my N frame snubbies (24 and a 25). Because the bottom is open, my 6.5" 629 and my 6" Python fit also. I've since got a 686 and 629 snub that also fit well. I then wanted an iwb for my K frame 686 2.5". It works great and has an adjustment for my 3 N frame snubbies too. Their service is great. Priced very reasonable too.
