Default Renew CC asked if I was prior military.

This was in Kansas today.
I don't think I've been asked in the past.
Seemed odd to me wondering if this is a standard question?

Maybe they wanted to give you a discount? In Texas, the renewal fee is $70, but for an honorably discharged veteran, it's $25.

In some states showing proof of military or law enforcement firearms training allows you to skip the required training course.

Here in N.C. they asked me to provide a copy of my DD-214, saying they had forgotten to get it when I initially applied 5 yrs ago. Weird that they would ask for it now. No discount, though.

That's good to know and odd as well. I will be renewing mine later this fall. I'll make sure I have a copy of my DD-214 available.

In VA LEO, military and retires in those fields don't have to take the training course.

Here in Alabama, Jefferson County at least, the renewal fee is only $7.50. Hard to ask for a discount off of that. No training requirement either.

No CCW required in Missouri to carry.
I renewed mine in July and paid $50.00 for 5 years.
Need a Missouri CCW in states that do require a card to be legal there.
A small price to pay to travel around this great country armed.

We pay $50 for 8 years renewal. Just recently they changed lifetime license from $300 to $200 , renewable at anytime. At $200, and I'm 65 now, I would only have to live 32 more years to break even. Don't think I got that much tread left on me to make it pay. THP handles carry license now, and renewal is as easy as Drivers License renewal.

I was renewing mine this year too when they first asked for it.
I had already filled out the renewal paperwork and paid my fee. About 2 weeks ahead of my then current CCP expiring, I received a notification in the mail from the Sheriff's Dept. stating that they needed my Army discharge papers (I had checked "prior military service" on my original CCP application back when I first got it but they never asked for any paperwork at that time).
The stuff I sent them must have satisfied them because they issued my renewal about 5 days before my CCP expired.

Makes me wonder why they are asking. As one stated, looking for a dishonorable discharge?. DD214 will tell if you have been deployed to a war zone. First thoughts were PTSD?

Just seems funny to me.

Slightly off thread but browsing in a LGS a few weeks ago they had a stack of Fed forms and I noticed some new categories at the bottom asking questions and having check blocks that you had to fill in N/A, Yes or No...

I noticed the revision date was October 2016. I haven't bought anything lately but am wondering what's with these "new" questions:

Big Brother wanting more to stuff in their database?

Santa "makin his list and checking it twice"?

Some clerk somewhere playing with Word fonts and finding extra space at the bottom?

Keep paper plants running?

As the old radio show ended: Only the government (Shadow) knows!

I live in Maine where it's legal to carry concealed without a permit. Although many peeps get a permit thinking it makes them more legal I guess. If one applies for permit, it is $35 for two years in the city I live in, training is required unless prior LEO, not sure about military though. No discounts. The process I believe was just to discourage any casual person from applying for a concealed permit. It took several tries for the permitless concealed carry to finally be passed last year. Despite huge concern of peeps going wild and crazy, and an upswing in murders with firearms predicted, it never happened.

Iowa issues 5yr. Concealed Carry Pemits which require certification of weapons training(very easy) but they also accept my DD214 as proof of weapons training. My DD214 is now 50 years old and very flimsy but it does show my rifle qualifications. Iowa is also an open carry state but I've never seen anyone doing it. We have plenty of gun haters here so I'm not interested in stirring them up nor giving BGs a heads up.

I had to give them mine when I applied for the first time in Mecklenburg County. I'm not up for renewal yet so it should be interesting if I have to give it to them again when they have it on file.

It's only going to get worse, look for more "disqualifiers" and the like in the future.

I'm surprised by most of the costs you guys are listing. In NV the initial cost of applying for the ccw is $98.50 iirc and it is now up to 120 days from time of application to the time you receive it. It is good for 5 years and come renewal time the cost is $65 and the wait time is around 90 days. It takes some planning to not have your permit lapse as well because they only allow you to renew 3 months in advance. There are no exceptions to doing the 8 hour required class for the initial permit, and for renewals I believe it is 6 hours. All of these costs do not include the cost of the class. Those prices are dependent on where you take the class and some places force you to purchase their ammo for the shooting portion

Actually, a bit surprised to hear you don't need a CCW in Maine. I've always thought Maine was pretty much a leftist state. Good news!

costs for an Illinois Conceal Carry Permit will run you close to

150 for the permit / 50 to 75 for the electronic finger prints / 25 for the electronic picture / 255 dollars at the Jr College for the 16 hour course .. and then you have to buy 50 rds at the range and the range fee ..

So just under 550 to 600 to get your permit .. some take a course that has Illinois/Utah/Florida all in a weekend .. not sure what that would cost .. it really is a hindrance to many people to come up with that amount ..

Illinois way of keeping the number of permits low .. for non resident only 4 states are approved only Hawaii, New Mexico, South Carolina, and Virginia have been classified by Illinois as “substantially similar”. 300 dollars for the non resident license .. these states can change at any time .. and have ..

In the county where I live they ask for it too, and they state that is the reason why they ask is the reason above. It seems odd that they're trying to enforce a federal law. (I shouldn't be surprised, these days I guess local governments can pick and choose what federal laws they want to enforce.) Surrounding counties don't ask for a DD-214.

If they run a records check, they'll get that info without asking. I've never been asked in 40 years of having a license.

ME is one of the most 2A friendly states around. It's been an open carry state practically forever. It's still a shall issue state for those that want a license.

For some reason, the City of Portland likes to hire police chiefs and other city officials from Los Angeles. More than one chief has found out the hard way that he can't deny a license absent someone being a PP. Also, at least one chief was fired because he tried to "crack down" on open carry.

Detroit Chief James Craig retired from the LAPD and was hired as chief in Portland. He talked about that a few years ago and mentioned that he was routinely denying permits and then found out that ME is a lot different than CA when every one of his denials was overturned. He's now pro 2A and encourages Detroit residents to get permits.

ME is liberal is some ways, but it's solidly pro 2A. Now no permits needed to carry, no "roster" of approved guns, minimal "gun free" areas.

I was looking at KS' CCW regulations recently and saw that the only applicants exempt from taking the class to qualify are LE. Military service does not exempt an applicant from the training. That said, if they're offering discounts to veterans for renewals, that's great!

While KS is one of the Constitutional carry states, I think it still behooves a person to have a CCW in the event of crossing state lines (those that reciprocate, that is). I'm getting ready to retire one of these days, and will have the ability to carry through LEOSA, but having that state CCW just seems like a good option regardless. As one can never have enough training, I may also take the course to cover myself civilly if the issue ever came up.

Ironically, I have had my CCL here in NY state since 1990 and we have never had a renewal requirement until now. I will have to renew my CCL by January 2018 and every 5 years thereafter. At this time there is no charge to renew, which is surprising since they find a way to tax everything that doesn't move in this state. By the time I need to renew again, I plan on being long gone from this police state.

Concur w/ this poster. The initial training class in Clark County cost another $45 paid in advance at a LGS, fees to use a shooting range to qualify, plus pay for targets & ammunition. My classmates & instructor were all veterans except for one young guy whose parents were USAF vets. Required DD-214 & other docs. My biggest gripe is that we had to present the bundle in person at Metro PD downtown the following Monday; a long drive, and very long wait to be interviewed & photographed. The process takes the better part of two full days.

I dread the thought of having to actually use the license both morally, legal fees, & even more paperwork. Like this poster, I plan to renew as soon as allowed since the County took all 120 days plus mail times to send my original license.

Freedom sure ain't free!

The cost is ridiculous. Once we get Mike Madigan and his ilk out of office, we can propose legislation to cut the cost to 1/3 and have a reasonable expectation the bill will pass.
