Default Price HIKE for gun permit renewals

Hello All!

Do you know that CT's Governor Dan Malloy is proposing to hike the price of pistol permit renewals from $70 to a whopping $300?!?!?!?! This is absolutely ridiculous! He failed CT by getting us into huge debt, unnecessarily raised property taxes, haven't addressed the unemployment concern, and destroyed our educational system, and if this goes through, it's probably a matter of time before other states try the same shameful tactics. I could be wrong, but I heard GA is the only state who passed legislation on an additional tax on all ammo. They figured if they can't take away our right then they'll price us out of it. Check out the quick article.

Seattle has a $25 per gun tax and 5c per bullet tax on ammo besides.

Move outta that state while you can. The longer you delay, the more them greedy money sucking politicians will bleed you.
I left Chicago 4 years ago.
Good luck. But it's only going to get worst.

yikes .. thought Illinois was high at 150 that would double our fee ..

people in Seattle will just go out of town and buy their ammo .. not sure its passed the Seattle City Council yet .. the city is just harming themselves and the gun stores there .. people will go out of the city and buy ..

If passed it will actually harm the city by reducing the taxes gun stores pay as no one will be buying guns nor ammo from them .. there are many other stores in the area that will welcome the addition sales and people traffic ..

Edit .. it did pass the Seattle City Council but Representatives of gun-rights groups have said the tax, which will be assessed from gun sellers, is illegal because a state law prohibits cities from regulating firearms.. so the courts will decide ..

I agree with your thought. The problem is that not everyone can move out as soon as they'd like. I won't bore you with why my wife and I can't move, but suffice it to say when we can, we will.

Hey, I know what your saying.
I was in the same situation as you are now.
Heck took me nearly 61 years to leave and settle in a new state.
Family, job, friends and it is hard to leave.

The fee structure here in CT will be out of control if this passes. $370 for the first time applicant is not the complete cost, just the states portion. Each town imposes a fee structre as the town permit is required first then you have 60 days to get your statewide 5 year permit from the state police. My town charges the first timer $70. payable to the town for the application fee, $14.75 payable to the state for federal criminal history check, $50. payable to the state of ct for state criminal history check. 3 checks = $134.75 just to get started. When the town permit was approved I still had to go the state police and pay $70. for my 5 year state permit with photo taken on site. So now under this hike it will be a total of $504.75 if nothing changes fee wise in my town for a first time applicant. I'll call it a punishment tax for excercising my right.
So now I'll have a $300. renewal fee if this passes. I am looking forward to having my voice heard and that of other responsible owners, time to be heard. Gawd forbid if they tax, surcharge ammo. This state is plenty restrictive as is and only the law abiding PAY the price. My Florida permit application has been submitted, we own property there too but were not planning on moving permanently just yet. We would net $12,000 per year more in our pockets in retirement by moving. That's a nice chunk!

Absolutely right!! I didn't even mention how this fee is ONLY the baseline for new applicants! So, yes....over $500 is absolutely ridiculous! If I could move I would have already in a heart beat! Good luck in FL if you decide to move and save money!

Did my renewal online yesterday (Florida).
Took a selfie used white laundry room door for back ground.
They supply a sizing tool online when you upload to get correct picture sizing. Paid 50.00 hit submit, will be good for 7 more years.

Living in Florida has advantages for sure when it comes to conceal carry permits.

Just hope it stays this way.

Illinois is much the same way .. a 5 year license cost 150 for the license .. but you have to take a 16 hour course which runs another 250 plus electronic finger prints and picture about another 125 so the first time licensee it will cost 525 dollars or more .. if you are a vet or have gun safety classes already taken 8 hours can be reduced from the training .. but still the other 8 hours of training I think runs 175 dollars .. then you have to pay for range fee and ammo at the gun range for the shooting requirements ..

I would love to move but Grandma won't leave her kids and g-kids .. so that is out of the question ..

Sounds like typical Connecticut! Here in Ma. it's bad enough at $100 but that $500 sounds like highway robbery. If they can't take guns away they just try to price folks out of the market. Heard the corporate taxes are terrible too! Stinks being stuck in states like this.

Ah Massachusetts! I have considered applying for my permit there because we own seasonal property on the Cape. After looking over the process after downloading the application it seemed like a steep hill to climb for an out of stater like me. Im amused by the whole "Restrictions for Non-resident Temporary License to Carry Firearms". You have it worse than CT with your trigger restrictions and the like.

If you haven't already, join the NRA and your state rifle and pistol association. Become politically active and vote in every election and contact your representatives.

Fees and taxes that high seem to border on being unconstitutionally restrictive, especially to the poor and elderly. Thank goodness I live in one of the Free States.

So, somebody correct me what I'm missing, because I must be. If the supreme court has ruled that a person does have the right to own a handgun (as I believe it has), then how can ANY state charge a fee for ANYONE to exercise that right?
I know in my state there is NO way to legally own/purchase a handgun without forking over $100 for the permit to do so.

If one chooses to live in an area where everything is taxed to death, you've made your bed and chose to sleep in it.

Are you serious? You can't be THAT ignorant?!?!?! This comment is so ridiculous that I don't even have the patience to deal with you. If you don't like the thread then politely leave. Good-bye!

Exactly my point. But it takes organizations and money to fight this sort of injustice. I would equate what fees and taxes do to exercising your Second Amendment Rights to what voter registration schemes and restrictions do to your right to vote. The same arguments can be used, in my opinion.

I paid $20.00 for my PA permit a year ago in Berks County. Took 10 minutes at the Reading Airport sub station.

In the County we live in, we don't even have to go to the Courthouse anymore. The Sheriff set up a substation at the Reading Airport. 25 bucks and under 15 minutes in and out. I used to hate to go into the cesspool that is Reading to get my Permit.

For reference. In Mississippi where I live they dropped the price, and if military veteran with supporting documents, free enhanced carry. Since I am a disabled veteran, the price is free except first time $32.00 fingerprints.

If you own property here, you might qualify for a resident permit. You'll probably need to consult a firearms lawyer, but I think that the ATF allows multiple state residency for firearms purposes. If that's so, you might have an argument that you are a resident of MA at least part time.

Again, you'll probably have to consult a lawyer, but it might be worth your while. I know a couple of names of lawyers that specialize in licensing and provide them to you via PM. I have no connection to them, but they have good reputations.

I got my license there just about a year ago. I had already filled out the application on line and printed it. It took me ten minutes from the time I walked in the door until I walked out with my license. As I recall, at the time it was $20.00 for a five year permit. Has it gone up since then?

We still have freedom in Maine - for now. Constitutional carry became law last year. We still have permitted carry for those that may be traveling outside the state.
Permitted carry is $35 for the initial 3 years, then $20 for three years thereafter. Constitutional carry requires notification if stopped by law enforcement, permitted carry doesn't.
Plenty of land for sale up here!!!!

Hopefully not for long. Appeals arguments were last week. City hasn't made ANY money off of this. Probably lost some. One of the busiest gun shops moved outside city limits. Sales skyrocketed.

"New at Precise Shooter this week - 2017-02-12

WA Supreme Court is going to hear oral arguments for our case against Seattle's gun and ammunition "tax" at 9am on February 16th.

If you are in Olympia on that day, this should be a fun session to visit. If not, here is the video link." watch – TVW, Washington States' Public Affairs Network

And it made national news. My theory? He's interested in re-election (don't mention he's the second least-liked governor in the US), and is pulling a Bloomberg. He wants lots of national attention, so like Bloomberg with his soda ban, he's picking on people to get a response. What a piece of garbage.

Just another method to keep law abiding citizens from having their weapon at hand. This will do nothing to curb crime or take illegal guns off the streets since criminals by nature, will not follow the law.

Here's he thing...even many democrats refused to vote for him for re-election once he made promises to stop spending while we're in a deficit then as SOON AS he got re-elected for his second term, he gave his administration a $1.3 million raise!! That was insulting to all of CT, no matter which aisle of politics you resided on.

When you find out, please let me know!!! I have a feeling it's going in someone's pocket! I'm wondering how much in electricity bills is the Pearl Harbor bridge on I95 costing taxpayers. That bridge and a little more space on I95 is about all I've seen him do in two terms!

It is the immoral equivalent of a poll tax, which is meant to make it too expensive to exercise a right guaranteed by part of the Constitution. The federal courts should treat it the same way they treated poll taxes.

Would it be accurate to deduce that there are few to zero low paid workers living in crowded or multi-apartment areas that are comparable to those in south Chicago - that is, no rampant high crime areas or special interest groups, such as "Black Lives Matter?" I ask because people who have middle and upper class standards of living will be able to squeeze CCW money into their budgets. But people living in high risk areas - people who need this layer of security - are priced out of the possibility of licensed CCW.

You bring up a valid point. I think the part of the agenda of jacking up the fee is to price low income individuals out of getting their license (that and eliminating our constitutional right). As you stated, people living in those high risk areas need this layer of security the most and yet they have the most barriers to cross when applying for a permit.
