Those were riot helmets in the old days. Some doubled as motor helmets. In the 70's, we were all issued riot helmets in my department. It was that way in many departments, although most didn't wear the helmet in a patrol car.

Back then, many departments qualified the old PPC course at the 7, 10, 15, 25 and 50 yards lines. As Old cop mentioned, everything from 25 yards and in was DA. At the 50, it was single. Total round count was usually 60 rounds with a 300 perfect.

Yep. I'll never forget going to my first out of town training in about 1977 in Los Angeles. I went for a ride along at the station on Santa Barbara Street, can't remember the division. I got in with the Sgt. and he was amazed that my 2 1/2" 19 was a .357 magnum, loaded with .357 magnum and capable of being cocked for a single action shot. He was still carrying a LAPD 6" .38 Spec. (I think it was a 14) loaded with round nosed lead bullets. He couldn't believe how advanced we were out in the sticks.
