I've had both and sold the 6" because the three small holes in the barrel are not much of a comp...it recoils a lot more than the 4". It is a lot bulkier than a 4" also...

Some questions are better off left unanswered.

He needs a 500, great! I think we all know in the ins and outs on this topic.

I have a 4 inch and shoot it a good bit. I would like to sell it and get a 6 1/2. The 6 1/2 looks right to me. Like a 629 that swole up. I DO wish it was available without the porting.

Check out Youtube.com and the different barrel lengths. Lots of interesting videos.

I have a 4" 500 that I carry in a "Diamond D" shoulder holster. I also have a Galco belt holster for it....not sure I like the carry safety strap yet on this holster.

I have a 4" 500 and a Simply Rugged Sourdough that I wear at 10 o'clock (cross draw), but I recently picked up a 2¾” 460 that I'm pretty sure is going to replace the 500 for bear duty. The balance on the snubby is superior and it's simply much easier to present in a hurry.

If you're up in the NW , Montana , Wyoming etc those big grizzlies can travel at speeds over 35 mph , that almost 50 ' / second . It takes the human brain 1-1.5 seconds to process what the eye sees . That means the bear could of moved 50-75 " Closer " than when you first saw it . So , it really is coming down to which barrel length can you draw the fastest and shoot several shots quickly and accurately ? You need to do a lot of practicing , which ever barrel length and load (or factory ammo) you choose . Jerry Miculek has a video on shooting the 500 , it's interesting to watch .
