If you don't want to carry it, I would use a car safe with cable or chain/lock and lock it in my car. That's what I do.

not sure about other states but if I remember correctly I think in Missouri it is a Class D felony if you possess a firearm on any US Postal Service property

I feel my car is safer than a hotel. At least the lights and horn attract atention if someone opens it. I can only guess what might happen at a hotel.

Don't you watch Bond movies.................

I'd at least place in in a hard case that doesn't scream gun....... maybe even put it inside a sealed Post office shipping box............ if asked tell them it's some legal documents....... you need to deliver it to a customer the last day of the conference

If not Pointless , then " Lacking specificity, so as to make the whole discussion of no use to the OP " .

1. Know the actual Statutes in effect regarding Posted Signs . Can run the gamit from no force of law, to serious enough to make you a Prohibited Person.

2. What are consequences of gun related embarrassments to your employer or business relationships.

If the above results in not carrying during official convention events, then :

3. You might not * prefer * to secure your gun in your vehicle. Too Bad . If your binary options are to secure in vehicle, or not be armed at all, the choice is yours . I would be thinking about upgraded lockboxes and non-heirloom guns, but your choice is up to you.

4. Most cities seeking upscale conventions don't want bad things happening to the golden geese, likewise upscale hotels generally don't want bad things happening to the golden geese, inside their hotels.

Stay inside either the convention venue, within your hotel. If they are seperate locations , travel directly on convention provided shuttle, or take a cab. Notice the poster above and his friends were in a potentially hairy situation walkng the neighborhood, not at the Hilton. Dining room or lounge.

So you'd take your gun--which is your responsibility--and hand it to a complete stranger?

No I'd hand them what looks to be a "postal package"........to put in "their safe".....you get a receipt..........

Have you ever shipped a gun?????.....flown with a gun??....... given it to a gunsmith??????

Ever give your car keys to a valet at a hotel???????

If you are worried/paranoid.....keep the slide.

The OP is looking of alternatives in a touchy situation.......is mine ideal? No but it's an alternative.

You guys are way over thinking this.
What if the OP couldn't take a lap top into the conference? Would anyone think twice about leaving it in their car?

I would suggest side stepping give advise here just in case of vicarious liability. Something does not sound right.

That's not advice. That's a statement of fact. He/she can proceed as they wish . . .

(PS: You don't really understand vicarious liability, but it's a couple nice big words to toss around . . . )

The OP stated explicitly that he doesn't want to leave it in his car. So maybe come up with a solution that fits his parameters

Yup. Key thing is, I hand it to my FFL, at which point it goes into the USPS, and isn't my responsibility anymore.

Big difference between Me >> FFL >> USPS, and Me >> Some Guy That Works At A Hotel.

Quote:
.....flown with a gun??.......
Locked luggage. Also, you're doing a thing you're supposed to be doing, not hiding a gun in a package and passing it off to a stranger.

Quote:

Licensed and such. Not some guy. Also...no, actually, I've done all my own work to this point. Huh.

Quote:

I must say, I've never quite understood valets in general. And I believe you're missing the point on it. Car =/= gun.

Here's a good litmus test--imagine that, after doing whatever thing you're considering doing, you had to explain yourself to the police.

---

Legally? Who knows. We don't know the laws of the jurisdiction OP's conference is in.

Practical terms? It's a You-Know-What Sandwich. An absolutely stupid number of people have access to your room--plus all of their ex-con boyfriends and junkie partners and such. And there's usually nothing you can cable-lock the gun to that can't be broken in a minute. And they've got plenty of time and privacy, if they're going to be burgling your room anyway.

Some years ago, a competitor at Camp Perry had his hotel room burgled. Lost a laptop, and also his pistol box. IIRC, it was something like $3500 in guns alone (two pistols), another $800 in optics, a few hundred more in small equipment, and $200 in gun box.

The box got recovered a few years later, on some nearby train tracks. The goons had finally succeeded in prying/smashing the box open, and discovered that they were probably going to have a hell of a time moving a custom-built 1911 BE gun and a Walther GSP Expert. So they dumped it. The box sat open, exposed to the elements, for years.

Naturally, everything was a total loss.

Why take your firearm if you have to store it some place else? Just carry it as if it wasn't there, with confidence, concealed out of sight. I go lots of places with mine. Just do it!

Within the OP's stated parameters ( no to car, no to hotel safe) , the answers are simple. Leave guns at home, take your chances being non-armed.

Not what he wants to hear, but that's what fits his parameters. Either roll with that, or modify parameters.

Iff you've got to travel with the pistol and don't know the territory, then educate yourself as to the legalities and plan accordingly. First, does the establishment prohibit firearms in the property period, or just carrying? I think everyone who carries concealed and travels should invest in decent personal gun vaults or something similar. Find a place inside your automobile to fasten a box if you can't take it inside. Have a solid hard side suite case or travel trunk that locks if you can take it inside the hotel and leave it in your room. Rig that container so that you can cable the lock box to the inside and lock them both. I seem to recall that there used to be some inexpensive travel alarms that someone could use to alert when a case, safe, etc was opened by unauthorized persons. The last thing anybthief wants is to draw attention to themselves. A hote employee trying to snoop theu your suitcase certainly doesn't want an alarm going off on him/ her - especially where alarms aren't supposed to be. Same for your car. If such a product is not currently available, then maybe there should be. As for other recommendations, know the laws of the area you'll be, and plan accordingly. And leave nothing in your room, either out in the open or not locked up that could tip someone off while they're snooping.

I rarely leave the conference/training site when I go to some professional event of that nature. Some years back I attended training at the NAC (National Advocacy Center) in Columbia SC and it was a federal facility on a university campus and I had to fly to the class. I never left the property. Period. This was about 2 years after a couple of prosecutors were killed returning from dinner or some such thing while attending a class there. And in the welcome presentation, they actually specified two, and ONLY two, "safe" routes to take from the NAC/hotel to and from downtown. F Dat. Real good class, but a pain to get there due to the time change and they had us traveling the day before class.

Pocket knife with a blade less than 2.5" is generally ok (you may have issues if your PO is within another federal facility with metal detectors). I believe fixed-blades are a no-go.

Go to hotel desk. Ask for manager. Explain circumstances ask if your piece can be placed in THEIR safe. Not room safe. If good to go ,secure gat in zippered gun pouch with little padlok. This will keep clerk from playing with piece while his boss is away. Leave bullets in envelope
In your room. You've done your due diligence. If gun goes bang some body else goes to pen.
