Good show. Uncle Jeff would be proud! Proper use of Weaver, good control, kept his head, and most importantly, he was on Condition Yellow, identified the threat, and went from Yellow to Orange to Red seamlessly, maximized the distance between he and the aggressor, used the sights and was able to win even though the aggressor already had his pistols out. Excellent!

Looks like the shop owner had a 1911, and hit and neutralized robber #1 on the first or second shot.

Also, the shop owner pulled his weapon and engage robber #1 while a support column visually shielded him from robber #2, briefly making it a one-on-one confrontation. Plus, rather than keeping his focus on his would-be victim, robber #1 is distracted trying draw a second gun, and so lost the initiative. Due to his good shooting skills, this was all the shop owner needed to quickly even-up the odds, at which point, robber #2 decides its time to heck get the heck out of Dodge.

Jimmy Groover, the owner of the Dixie Gun and Pawn in Georgia (where this took place), isn't exactly what I'd consider "old". He's only 64-years-old...not even "officially" a senior citizen. And he appears to be in pretty good physical condition.

And unlike lots of people who like to gloat and laugh over a bad guy getting killed, Mr. Groover continues to say he regrets having to make the split second decision to shoot someone. He isn't going around bragging about it. But his store has been robbed or burglarized twenty times in the past years, and he did what he had to do to protect himself and his employee.

He's quoted as saying, "I had no other choice. I hate that it happened. I've been doing this for thirty years. Nothing like this has ever happened. I never wanted this to happen. But I want to go home at night, too."

He seems like a decent human being, and I'm glad he survived the incident so he could go home that night.

I went back and watched the video again. I didn't realize it that homes pulled out a second pistol. It looks like that didn't matter though, he was becoming room temp before he hit the deck.

I've been in this shop many times. As a matter of fact I was just in there this morning. For what it's worth, and if you've never been in that situation, his assistant did exactly the right thing. If he had gone for his gun, it most likely would have been fatal for him and probably the owner too. They have since changed the layout of the store slightly, for better field of view. I've never mentioned the shooting to him, but know this, he made the right decision, as difficult as it was. Hopefully he doesn't lose any sleep over it. Despite what some may think, he is not without feeling.

As I age and fit the criteria for being a "senior" at virtually all places,I believe that more and more.
What's an old guy got to lose? He's had most of his ride on the planet,he's had his share of life's bumps and bruises. What is anyone going to do to him now, that will really phase him?

It looks like the dead perp screwed up and dropped the magazine from his first pistol, it hits the floor and slides a ways as he is reaching for his second gun. Can't tell if it was one of the perps or the store owner who shot out the glass in the display case.

Glad this had a happy ending.

You can't see it because the owner is mostly off-camera, but notice how the employee started "getting down", probably at the instructions of the perps. I presume the owner was doing the same, used the movement of the crouch and his body position to conceal his draw. Since he was low, I think it was his first round that went through the display case.

Slowing down the video and taking a second look, I am sure the perp dropped the magazine from his first pistol. As he falls to the floor it looks like the slide is locked back on it. As the perp is going down he fires a shot a split second before the store owner. Timing makes me think the perp shot out the glass in the display case.

Having a poorly trained criminal drop the magazine by mistake and thus render his pistol useless is a strong argument for a magazine safety I guess.

That mistake, and the pillar between the second perpetrator, was the only opening the store owner needed.

You make an excellent point, and I debated whether I should call it one over the other, and I called it Weaver based upon the fact that it appeared one arm was dropped a bit more than the other, and I felt he had the recoil control, which comes about from the isometric push-pull or tension, which is the real hallmark of Weaver, as opposed to arm placement. That said, if you think it looks more like Isosceles, that is ok with me. Not argumentative at all. Good eye!

Best,

Shawn

"He's only 64-years-old...not even "officially" a senior citizen."

Certainly no disrespect intended in characterizing Jimmy Groover as an, "old dude". Quite the contrary, as I'm something of an old dude myself.

Nothing but respect for Mr. Groover. Jimmy handled himself heroically, albeit a reluctant hero, in a position that most of us pray to never find ourselves in.

Wishing him the best and wishing the cops the best of luck finding the other mope and successfully getting him prosecuted for felony murder.

Thanks, Shawn - as well as for your very nice PM. I was taught to shoot handguns while in the Army. At the time, there was a lot of transition with regards to how you were taught to hold the piece. We were initially taught to shoot one-handed only using the classic "Camp Perry stance". If you even thought about using your off-hand for support - well, let's say I got to do lots of push-ups. We were then taught to use the Weaver stance, but there were plenty of folks to laugh and criticize you for using it as "real men" only needed one hand to shoot the pistol. Isosceles just never felt right to me. To this day, right or wrong, I use a modified Weaver stance.

Gotta love the 1911 - putting bad guys down since, well, 1911.

Regards,

Dave

I have seen this before. There is a lot to learn from this video. Take a look at the video counter and how fast it happened. At most 15 seconds from the robbers coming into view. While my sense of justice makes me want to cheer for the store owner, the older (grey haired) side of me realizes what a tragedy this is. This may have occurred in seconds, but the effects will last a lifetime for all involved. Anyone who has been involved in life and death conflict will relate to my comment. It affects you, period. I am glad the store owner and employee were unharmed.

Glad this had a happy ending.
Think the Perp shot the display case glass out .. if you can slow/stop the video to the frame you first see the puff of smoke from the owners gun .. if you look I believe you can see the bullet about to hit the guys heart .. it appears to be just inside his jacket as it flairs open from him lifting the 2nd pistol in the air .. just a few inches from him ..

I've always loved a 'movie' that has a happy ending!

Looks like that to me as well.
Perp #1 got off one shot low before he was fatally hit. All happened quickly.
