Around the house or on trips to the hardware store in the afternoon? I don't carry. Too much bother. Going down rural roads at night, I prefer to carry...but my carry gun will be very small and light. Traveling that takes me thru large cities at night? Carry, preferably a service sized gun. With my wife having access as well.

Going to a movie? Sorry. Been so long since I did that, I can't remember what I did. Going to church? Given how much some people hate any religion, I carry under my suit coat. I'm ready to meet Jesus face to face, and anyone coming in to shoot up the place needs to be ready too.

I do think a lot of Internet carriers are paranoid. Guys who won't leave home without a service gun, 3 magazines, a BU gun, a tactical knife, an "EDC flashlight", who practices his quick draw a half hour a day and spends thousands on taking "tactical training" - way I figure it, they need to move out of Afghanistan and come back to the States. But carrying a small gun to help you get out of a tight spot? That just seems like good sense.

I'll add a statistic I read a while back that was very interesting. In Chicago, around 2011-2012 time frame, 70% of homicide VICTIMS had a criminal record!

Where I live...my immediate area is very safe. About 20 miles from me, there are weekly shootings. Not a lot of thugs or terrorists go to places like the Tack & Feed store, and most don't seem attracted to hardware stores. Increasingly, my favorite carry gun is my NAA 22. But there are places where I bring along an L-frame with a backup...

There's probably a lot of threats to my life that are far more likely that I don't spend near the time, attention, effort or money on compared to gun carry. I know guys who are morbidly obese, puff on cigs and gulp down Cokes all day who would not think about going anywhere unarmed to protect themselves from bodily harm. One guy at the club looked like he wasn't going to survive the walk on a hot summer day to hang his target.. yet bent my ear for an hour about survival preparedness. So... whatever.

I love that you pointed this out. For some, it's just a hobby, others it's part of a way of life, and there are as many other reasons to have or carry a gun as there are ways and types of guns to carry. For some, it's a false sense of safety when they haven't changed the batteries in their smoke detectors, checked their fire extinguishers, or checked their cholesterol since God only knows when. It's like that "part of a complete breakfast" thing they always say at the end of cereal ads - sure, Lucky Charms are awesome, but you have to do all the other stuff to take care of yourself too.

Hey,I resemble that remark! My "EDC flashlight" ( single AAA) gets used about everyday........ closely followed by my Benchmade 2.9" pocketknife.

I use my EDC flashlight and knife all the time. I used my EDC flashlight three times yesterday. Once to inspect a gun I was purchasing and again later in the afternoon when I was fooling around with stereo component connections behind the TV and again to read the dang menu in a restaurant. Used the knife yesterday to open a delivery package. The one thing that never gets used is the gun!

Dear "Paranoid in Chattanooga",
Have someone order for you in the restaurant, use blunt plastic scissors to open packages and have your nails done at a styling salon. As far as using a flashlight for home handiwork, hire a nerd with a college degree-- don't foolishly endanger yourself by messing with wires and such.
Sincerly,
Ms. Manners

I wore one on the Job for 34 years. Can't break the habit. I do like being able to carry a wider variety of guns

It wasn't very long ago that somebody at Ohio State tried to run people over then stab him.

I expect that such attacks will continue. That's why I switched from a Smith 36 to a Glock 19 to a 3 1/2" M1911.

Fortunately, I believe that it will no longer be policy to grease the skids for such acts.

Feel the need to mention the fact: the world contains people with many different views. We fight and have fought the world over to protect our rights and way of life, as have many countries. The guns legally owned by our citizens are a deterrent to those who would walk all over us if they could. That same mentality is minimized by just one person legally carrying a gun, but still serves as a deterrent against those who do not care for our rights and lives. When I consider the world, I see people carrying guns because they have been and are continually threatened with malcontent. If for no other reason, we carry to protect our women, children, and countries. Many women the world over are carrying for this same purpose. May God bless them all.

A feller gave me some business cards titled "Why do I carry a gun?"
I carry a gun because there is evil in the world. It strikes in Churches, McDonalds, the Library, at home, and in traffic.
When it comes, you won't have time to wait for the police. It will come suddenly without warning and with unbelievable violence.
I believe it is my job as a man to protect my family and other innocents from this evil.
Generations of Americans have fought and died to protect this country, their families, and friends.
It is my right and my duty to follow in their footsteps if called upon to do so.

Works for me.

And if it happens at a bunch of places all at once, as I suspect it eventually will, you're going to be waiting a long time... maybe forever.

If there are ten cops available, and there's 15 cops worth of violent crime... or terrorism happening, somebody's going to have a VERY bad day. And that's under OPTIMUM circumstances.

In places like Germany, Sweden, France and Britain, you're supposed to lie back and enjoy it. The same applies in NYC, L.A. and San Francisco. Fortunately, not so much in Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Atlanta.

I have carried since I was fifteen years old. My father owned a restaurant, that was located on a main highway. In thirty five years, we had about fifteen attempted hold-ups. Each attempt was unsuccessful. Did not need a permit. The sheriff just told me to carry one.

I carry to protect myself and my loved ones. About three years ago, my wife was viciously attacked by a knife wielding nut case. She suffered extensive cuts and stab wounds that left her requiring 3 units of blood and a large number of stitches. She suffered from PTSD because of the incident, and that lead to both of us getting CCW permits. We both carry when we can on a daily basis. We will not be helpless victims in the future.

Welcome to the forum from Wyoming.

Your wife's experience is gut-wrenching. A thing I can't even grasp.

Good for both of you for getting your CCW permits and carrying. May you never need to use them.

I always attempt to decipher folks' handles on the forum: yours and your wife's initials? If so, most poignant.

All my best to you both.

Bob

I have 3 beautiful granddaughters and I worry about them as the oldest will soon be off to college ..

I hope someday your wife will be able to feel secure again and hope acquiring your CCL's will help in that recovery !!

I got into a situation a couple of days ago.
I was attacked by a dog (the same one that bit my Chihuahua) and although
the owner was very close by (had it by the leash) my right arm was pinned down.
(It only got fabric, not a scar on me. And the owner handled the situation perfectly)

Had this been a stray dog, and had i been carrying a gun (or a sword) on my right hip for easy draw
i would have been defenseless.

As i am living in Sweden, a gun is not allowed, so the situation is purely hypothetical for me.

BUT...

Does you that have the option to carry ever train to draw when your dominant arm is locked?

And by the way, The "perp" dog is now worm feed.

The reason I carry a gun is just in case a situation comes up where I need to shoot someone, God forbid, I'll have something on me to do it with...

I carry when I have pants on. Almost always a compact or full size Glock .40. Still being active LE with over thirty-five years on the clock, I have a duty to respond appropriately if a life threatening event occurs in my presence. I don't see that changing a lot after retirement whenever that occurs.

I would imagine for a variety of reasons.

Me, I carry because I might see something (or someone)I want to shoot.

I carry to return safely home to my wife and daughter, and to bring them home as well when we are out. I could care less if someone is taking a baseball bat to my car. I can make a phone call to the police and my insurance co. I will not put myself into a scenario that I escalate property damage with a drawn gun and have to kill someone. I don't pretend to be a cop. I will intervene to help someone else but only after being confident that I know what really is going down.

I carry because I consider it to be an unalienable right, cemented later by the Bill of Rights.

I also have been around the world a time or two and seen with my own eyes what evil men are capable of. This, I have no problem with eradicating in order to protect my own.
