Default Just one day, self defense

The following incidents occurred w/i easy driving distance of my home just in the last day. Note that I live in a semi-rural (horses, riding trails, orchard farms, etc.) suburb generally considered safe.

I heard this commotion while watching a movie. Thought it was the movie sounds at first, then charged my handgun.

1 dead, 2 wounded in home invasion in northwest Las Vegas | Las Vegas Review-Journal

One hour prior near my dentist's office:
Female dead on Copper Knoll Avenue in northwest Las Vegas - Story

Later this morning near my step-daughter's house:
Report: Son shot home invasion suspects with AK47 - Story

Google "shooting northwest las vegas" for 14 March 2017 for updated info. Police response available on video from local TV stations.

I was feeling guilty for spending scarce resources on firearms & shooting club memberships. Today it feels like common sense.

I would think it depends on what "easy driving distance of my home" means. I live a couple-three of hours drive from Chicago.

And then the following statement....we never have any trouble around here so it's so alarming.
I have turned down the TV volume to see if the sirens were outside or inside on the TV.

Soooo what happened in the area that isn't considered safe today?
If this is something that happens often I would be looking for a good realtor fast.

Thanks for the responses. I was shocked at both the proximity & the sheer volume of violence. The first home invasion occurred less than two city blocks away; i.e, a short walk. The 19 yr. old lady died about 1/2 mile south of that. Less than 1 hour separation in time. AFAIK unrelated incidents.

The North Las Vegas home invasion happened across a small park from my step-daughter's house where we usually gather for holiday meals. She has reported at least three break-ins in the last few years. I've offered to help teach her shooting skills but so far she has resisted on moral grounds (She is a trained nurse but prefers working on the Strip due to the great tips & nightlife.).

Yes, I'm ready to sell but unsure where to move. I like Nevada & the desert climate. I only need a small place now. California is too expensive for a retired vet on fixed income plus has arcane gun laws. Practical suggestions welcome...

Why wasn't your handgun already "charged"?

The way i see it, it is a security investment. And you are using your membership for practice. I also compare ammo to gold....can never have enough

To each his own...but my baby is always charged and ready to go.

Home invasions usually involve folks selling "consumables" not available in stores. When in quantity, along with cash proceeds, calamity ensues. Young lady was terminated for reasons the perp has in his/her head. We're # 14 on that list, crime is everywhere. Joe

Folks, the world just ain't what it used to be. I live on the outskirts of a small rural town in central NC. Burglary, home invasions and shootings are a daily thing now. Didn't used to be that way. Drugs seem to be the main cause with meth, heroine and prescription pain meds growing out of control. Most of the crimes here can be tied back to the drug problems.

Ha! Can't deny it, Sarge.

The impetus for my post was checking the local online news in the morning & finding two distinct homicides, one nearly across the road. Finding yet a third invasion in North Las Vegas that morning led me to look for answers. NLV has a reputation for violence despite recent improvements but that seemed miles away when I moved up here.

I note the young ages reported in these cases -- both defenders & attackers -- but age is not a shield.

Now that is a good suggestion that I will look into. I was considering Pahrump but not enthralled.

Like many/most locals I only visit Downtown & the Strip when I have visitors, so moving east to Mesquite is quite doable.

Not to hijack my own thread, but I met the King briefly when I was stationed out of Nellis AFB after the War in the mid-1970's & Elvis ruled at the Hilton International. If memory serves, he was buying ammunition at an impromptu gun show / flea market common then. He blended right in but my wife recognized his voice.

I live in a gated community in Henderson we have been having uninvited visitors at night. These visitors follow residents into community then look for open garage doors. The gates give residents a false sense of security.
Drugs and domestic violence seem to be top reasons for killings.

You're correct, Toyman. I moved to Northwest LV after selling a larger house in Henderson after the kids moved out. We used to signal neighbors to come over & visit by leaving the garage doors open. Not any more; particularly since that young police officer was shot down in NLV while puttering in his garage one night after work. He saved his family but at what cost.

Come to think of it, most of those friendly neighbors have moved elsewhere.

In terms of feeling guilty over spending scarce resources on SD preparedness, I think some of that needs to be factored into the monthly budget, just like food & utilities. For that i offer this lesson from years past. In the year 722, a minor potentate of a province in France was greatly influenced by a defeat handed to his neighbors by an invading army bent on looting and pillaging. He decided that maintaining a standing, professional force was warranted, and to pay for it, ruffled feathers by, among other sources, confiscating property or taxing local religious institutions to enlist, train, and equip troops. In 732, his preparations paid off, and Charles Martel and his standing army of 15k professionally trained, heavy infantry employed skill, deception, and surprise to defeat an invading hoard at the Battle of Tours. To those in his region who spent ten years cussing him, he was suddenly a hero.
