Funny enough, in Maine these days a person could have a bag of dope AND a firearm in plain view and not be in violation of any State laws (presumption that said person isn't a felon, under the influence and so on).

I know, I know, federal law. We don't have many FBI agents doing traffic stops in Maine. That I know of ...

I have no problem answering the questions because the answers are bland.

There is nothing illegal in my car ever. Not once.... and never will be. I'm not transporting contraband. It's me, my GPS and a jumper cables in the trunk. That's it. The only other thing that can be is groceries.

Where am I going? Home/work/store. That's it.

Can you search my car? No. But if you have a warrant....

Asked a bunch of questions?

I suppose if I was driving though Crack Town at 2am with a doped up hooker in the front seat I would expect to be asked a lot of questions, but I don't. When I've been pulled over it's just been a polite hello and asked for license and reg please.

Cops seem to have a pretty good radar about these things. If ya get asked a bunch of questions there's probably a good reason even if ya don't know what it is.

Years ago, in my wild and woolly youth (LOL), a friend was ranting about how a friend of his got beaten by some L.A. Sheriffs. Seems he was cuffed and was being carried to the car when he called the two Sheriffs a "bad name". Even at that age, I responded that if he called the Sheriffs Deputies bad names while cuffed, he deserves getting beat up for sheer stupidity. Those are genes we don't need in the pool!

My M.S. is in animal behavior and years ago, I read the Naked Ape. Desmond Morris, a world expert in primates, compares human behavior to other primates. He has a chapter on dominance and territory and talks about how to avoid traffic ticked. It works (sometimes).

Default When pulled over

This Eddie Craig sounds like a real ****** bag. I had more than 40 years in law enforcement and was never trained to go on a fishing expedition when making a stop. Only with some other probable cause like the smell of alcohol or drugs would the additional questions be asked. I would be willing to bet if Craig was on a sheriff dept. that he was let go because of some cause.

When stopped, stay in your vehicle unless the officer asks you to exit. Informing the officer that you have a CCW is up to you. However if the weapon is visible you will want to inform the officer immediately. Be cooperative with the officer and you will have no problem.

More people talked me into a ticket than talked me out of one.

Thanks for the replies all of you. I figured y'all would have the same thoughts as I did; he's promoting asking for trouble.

I would not consent to a search without a warrant, but I don't think that'll ever happen to me anyway. I drive with the traffic or a little slower anyway.

Almost correct. In FL you don't have to announce that you're carrying, but if they ask, you must tell.

Unfortunately, that doesn't always work. Note the video of the city cop in Canton, Ohio who was caught verbally abusing a motorist who was trying to present his carry permit to the cop as required in Ohio and couldn't get a word in edgewise, then got another raft of grief for supposedly not informing the cop that he was carrying (while the city cop was on his initial tirade). With the downside being so great from running into the rotten apple in the barrel, the consensus on the various web sites I have seen is to not disclose carrying a firearm unless the state law requires it or you are being ordered out of the vehicle.

I recently got pulled over for going down a one way street using my GPS that I haven't updated in a while.I realized after I turned it was one way,the officer asked me for my paper work an saw the PBA shield in window, but thanked me for posting in my window K9 in vehicle. The officer said I don't care if your carrying but does he bite an be both laughed. This guy Craig is just looking for trouble.

He is the type that will scream and shout about what you can and can't do .. and what they can and can't do to you !!

And when your arrested for doing what HE told YOU YOU could do he will rant and rave that they can't do that to YOU !!

Funny its YOU who got the ticket / YOU who went to Jail .. not HIM !!

And his RANTS go on !!

I got the "you know who I am?" a few times. I responded with: "No, but if you show me your license, we'll both know who you are..."

There's not enough bandwidth to list all the things those two cops did wrong that night. Nothing the driver could have done differently other than not being in Crack Town at 2Am with a hooker (didn't someone mention something about this earlier in the thread ). So while I find fault with the two cops 100%... I also say that being at stupid places doing stupid things with stupid people invites stupid things to happen.

There's no duty to notify in Tennessee. A lot of folks have guns in their cars, carry permit or not. Cops around here know this and handle theirselves quite well.

A different twist:
Law Enforcement is mostly 98% boredom and 2% sheer terror.

SO-
When you observed flashing blue lights in your rear view mirror, instead of slowing down and pulling over, increase your speed and with your left hand, give the "One Finger Salute" out the window. Keep going increasing your speed. In this way you will give the officer in pursuit excitement in his dull day, PLUS, you will meet officers from other agencies also.

I don't want ANYTHING to do with the police, AT ALL.

I've found that the best way to do that is to obey the law, especially the traffic laws.

Is that a 100% guarantee? No.

Will it serve you well in MOST cases (depending upon who and where you are)? Yes.
  • Obey the law.
  • Leave the "banter" to Law & Order.
  • Comply, but volunteer nothing and consent to nothing.
  • ALWAYS carry a recording device of some sort.

  1. Was he prosecuted for any of those alleged offenses?
  2. How many other videos of officer Harless subsequently came to light?
  3. Why was Harless's "punishment" modified by an arbitrator?
As you allude, "there's more to the story"... MUCH more...

In what capacity? Photographing the crime scene? Filing a report?

We both know that if I don't protect MYSELF in the moment, I won't get protected at all.

Them photographing my dead body and filing a report benefits me how exactly?

My avoiding the police by obeying the law and avoiding those who don't, harms whom exactly?

My overwhelming experience and observation is that those who have a lot of non-professional encounters with police make a lot of bad decisions, largely involving poor impulse control and a failure to grasp the concept of cause and effect.

If you're talking to the cops, somebody did something wrong, either you, the cops, or a third party.

Or you are talking to each other while waiting to be seated at a restaurant. Or they are asking for your help in finding a lost child. Or you are chatting with them at a pistol match. Or.........

I averaged over 1,500 traffic stops per year for over 24 years. I also responded to quite a few calls for service when neighbors were not getting along, people were fighting in bars, etc. I met individuals like Mr. Craig on two occasions. Not everyone is that defensive when meeting the police on less than pleasant circumstances.

I've been stopped by police while I was off duty. If you live long enough and travel enough, it's going to happen. If you don't go looking for a confrontation with police it is often difficult to find one.

That would involve me socializing with random strangers, cops or otherwise. I don't do that.

That's a professional encounter, not socializing.

I've shot pistol matches with ONE cop in twenty some odd years.

A virtually foolproof way to avoid confrontations is to avoid encounters. The way to avoid encounters with the police is to obey the law. It's no guarantee but it really cuts down the odds.

I advise people to obey the law and avoid people who don't, as well as the places where they congregate. You'd think cops would like that.

A couple days after we got our new puppy I put her on my shoulder rather than leave in the truck when walking into our local gas station convenience store. Cop was inside, which is not uncommon if for some reason there's only one cashier on duty, and he started a short conversation about the puppy and his dogs.

Quite a few cops are members of our rifle club. Last time I got pulled over I had a shot-up target stand in the back of the truck. Maybe he recognized me from the club or figured I was a member. I don't know. He could have given me a ticket but didn't.

I wouldn't go out of my way to interact with an on-duty cop cuz they got better things to do than listen to my mouth run. That's what ya'll are for.

I guarantee it's been more than that. They just don't walk around telling everyone about how they're cops, because (A) nobody cares, and (B) there are a lot of scum-sucking jackholes who don't really like them and will go around "outing" them every chance they get.

When I worked in the big city, I appreciated people who tried to avoid the police. When I worked in the sticks, I was kinda lonely!

That "guarantee" isn't worth the paper it's not printed on.

Most of my shooting was done in a local league where everybody pretty much knew everybody else.

By the way, the last cop with whom I shot a match crossfired onto my target.

So you basically just shot in your own little circle?

That's like saying redheads are rare because there's only one ginger in your local league.

Your statement was regarding those with whom ***I*** had shot.

In that context, it wouldn't matter if EVERY other shooter in every OTHER league was a cop.

You seemed to think that I'd shot with a lot of cops. I didn't... as if that's relevant to involuntary on the street encounters with police and how they should be handled.

Yes. Apparently you just shot with the boys in the holler. See, I interpreted "shooting matches for 20 years" as meaning you had gotten around some, which is certainly how you portrayed it in the context of your argument.

So I guess you're just making an argument that applies just to you, then. Okay, carry on.

I'm not sure what's so controversial here. My next door neighbor for 10 years was one of Chattanooga's finest. He mowed the lawn, drank beer and went shooting at the club just like me.

Let's move along.
