Instructor wounds student - idiotic move
EarthLink - Top News
(C) Associated Press 2017 [Earthlink 2017]
Can someone, anyone, explain to me why an instructor draws his gun from its holster and pulls the trigger, indoors, when he KNOWS the gun is loaded?
Maybe I am missing something here.......?

Michigan has strong requirements to become an cc instructor, so all you are missing here is

This what you get when the bottom feeder becomes an instructor.

You can't teach common sense, some people have it, some don't. No certificate is going to guarantee it.

A CCW instructor in the Des Moines area shot himself in the leg in front of a class(appendix carry). He survived....don't know if he's still instructing.

Our CCW instructor had an accidental discharge of his carry weapon with his daughter in the car. And he stressed safety so much. Have to be "on point" at all times.

Almost took a class with an instructor who seemed to have good qualifications...retired police instructor, former SWAT commander.
Then I found out one of the drills he does in the classroom is to have students take a functioning, but unloaded, gun, point it him, and pull the trigger, so his students could understand what it feels like to pull the trigger on a human being.
I decided to not take the class.

I can think of one guy on here, who purports to be an instructor, doing something at least that dumb.

I suspect he didn't know it was loaded. Which is a problem. I mean, he should have checked it before entering, and checked it when he picked it up.
The problem is that I don't know why he would need to bring any gun into a classroom.

I will tell you this: Beware of instructors that speak in buzzwords. I have found them--and I unfortunately deal with quite a few--to be universally useless.
Think about it--you are there to teach people things about guns, right? If that's your goal, why would you even consider abbreviating explanation and information into a catchy word-of-the-month?
Two options:
(1) You do not actually know what you are talking about
(2) You are simply trying to look cool

That's the problem. People think that because they were hired to instruct that they are automatically somebody special. We have them here as well as other gun forums.
Gee, look at me! THIS is what I teach my students. All the while gun safety takes a back seat.
Make sure your BS filter is set on high.

Over the years I have met a variety of instructors. A few were excellent, most were fair, but one or two made me happy I signed up for extra life insurance. When people ask me the most dangerous part of my job I tell them "firearms training", and I'm only half joking.
A couple of years ago a Pennsylvania State Police firearms instructor shot and killed a Trooper during a class room presentation. PSP were transitioning to the P227 at the time. The instructor hadn't cleared his weapon before using it as a prop. He violated just about every safety rule you could think of, and shot a young Trooper to death. Senseless. The instructor ended up pleading guilty to manslaughter and received jail time if I recall correctly.

A FTO at a neighboring agency was teaching his trainee to draw from the issue level 3 holster. Both officers had unloaded and cleared their weapons. After the instructions the officers re-loaded their weapons and was leaving the classroom when the trainee said "Let's draw and see who is faster". The FTO turned, drew, and shot the trainee in the stomach ! My squad decided never to apply at that agency as the probationary test involved being shot. (the weapon was .40 caliber and the trainee lived)

instructor would student
What happened to the prime rule "NO LIVE AMMUNITION IN THE CLASSROOM" and "MUZZEL DISCIPLINE". No one in the classroom should have live ammo with them regardless if the student is law enforcement or private citizen. I would think those instructors that were involved in the live ammo discharge should have their certifications revoked. Each time a firearm is used, it should be checked and doubled checked to ascertain the gun is clear of ammo and nothing in the chamber before the gun is used for the teaching tool. Both the instructor and student should check to see the gun is empty before the demonstration.

I witnessed a bone head move by an instructor at a full auto Uzi class.
He pulled up to the range with a trunk load of Uzis in his Crown Vic. We were all sitting on some benches facing the range. He dropped one of the Uzis with a loaded mag which then discharged multiple times. Luckily for us the muzzle hit the ground pointed at the berm.
Lesson for the day was that Uzis are not drop safe.

I'll bet a hundred that the only one in that room that didn't learn something from that was the "instructor".

People get complacent, and that has real consequences. There is a reason that competent instructors use replicas for demonstrations. I've seen lots of things done with "Blue Guns" that adequately showed the premise without being stupid dangerous.
