Default Guess who is now an open carry....

Guess who is now an open carry state? SC passed the bill today allowing open carry, but i haven't seen an effective date.

This is a surprise to me, I didn't know that they were even debating such a sweeping bill. I guess I'm just uninformed.

I guess everybody will be out shooting their guns in the air tonight to celebrate.

Welcome to the cadre of states that already do. I have on occasion open carried in Texas since it became law here... that said, I have not seen more than a hand full doing so. It is not how many do, it is that we c a n.

Florida had open carry back in 1987 while the state wiped away all local ordinances and carry permits making one CCW for the entire state.
After that open carry was banned.
During that year I open carried a Colt MK IV series 80 Combat Commander and except for the occasional "nice 1911" comment nobody even looked twice.
We have had the open carry initiative come up a few times in the State house but it never seems to pass for one reason or another, guess they feel that if you want to carry you should carry concealed so as not to freak out the anti gun nuts, which unfortunately seems like mostly live in my county.

Do you know what the provisions are yet? Most states with OC have restrictions on where you CAN OC - For instance in Missouri you can only OC where CC is allowed. Oregon for example is OC statewide but cities can restrict it if they want.

Not so fast! H3930 passed the house and now goes to the Senate. I hate to say it but the Senate is expected to let it die in committee. Cowards way out.

The proposed law still bans guns from schools and airports, which follows state and federal laws, bill sponsor Rep. Mike Pitts said.

"The bill is a very simple bill," Pitts said. "It means, by definition of the Constitution, it gives you the ability to keep and bear arms without having to be permitted by the country."

Some are complaining that it was pushed through without enough debate.

This isn't the first time I've heard people say that they haven't seen a whole lot of people open carrying in Texas since it became legal again. It's kinda strange. It only took Texas about 125 years to get open carry back. I remember all the ballyhoo and protests and marches advocating open carry. And now hardly anyone open carries. Go figure.

I've been trying to find some details but they are scanty. I'm not going to walk down the street with a holstered gun until I get the whole story. If it had PASSED passed, I'd expect to see some effective date on it, for instance.

As a former SC NATIVE I'm glad to see the state offer the freedom. The choice in yours. Personally I would never carry a defense handgun openly. To me it screams Shoot me First.... Open carry in the field hunting yes. But anywhere I would Need a gun for SD it WILL be concealed.

I don't want to carry openly. It just tells a perp that you need to be bushwhacked more carefully. I would like to be able to carry in the car w/o having to put it in the glove box, console or back of the vehicle.

Unless you have a CHL — not that I am in favor of OC in urban areas where it frightens or alarms many, but it is lawful with a CHL.

OC or CC with a permit is OK here.
But seems like a "Look At Me" thing OC in some of the stores in town.
Me? OC in the boon docks and hunting place's I go is OK.
In town, CC is just fine with me .

Default NOT MANY OC HERE EITHER

I don't know how long ago it's been legal to OC here in AZ, but you rarely see anyone do so. In my CCW classes, I don't recommend doing so in any metro area. Why draw attention to yourself? I'd rather not lose that tactical advantage. I'm the only one (besides a traveling partner) who knows I'm armed. I might be close enough to a criminally insane perp to stop him with my 1911 (or Smith revo), if he doesn't know I have a firearm.

My State allows open carry. I never do that tho. Too many people especially anti gunners will become concerned when they see someone openly carrying a gun. Personally, I don't want the added reaction of stupid people or talking to a LEO about it. I don't worry about printing either. In warm weather I wear a T-shirt that definitely prints but so far no reaction from naysayers.

Even though OC has been legal in my state I don't and doubt I ever would. I prefer to fly below the radar and someone OC around here draws unwanted attention from LEOs who are summoned from snowflakes who tremble at the sight of a firearm.

I'm glad they are getting looser on their restrictions. I used to have to literally drive around SC because they didnt reciprocate. Correct me if I'm wrong, but now they are reciprocal with other states on CC permits right?

P.S. I feel like OC can make you an easy target if you are somewhere that something might go wrong. If someone is planning something, who's the first ones they take out? The ones that are clearly a threat. Just my opinion of course.

According to the website USA Carry, SC allows reciprocal carry with the permit holders resident in the states shaded yellow.

And the states shaded blue allow reciprocal carry with resident SC permit holders.

It's not much of a deal if open carry is only allowed if you have a concealed carry permit....what's the point....at least in backwards Louisiana open carry has always been legal and you don't need no concealed carry permit to do so. Makes me glad to live here.\
Now if that new law allows open carry without the need for a permit , that's something of a great thing....a real freedom.

Let's get going on Constitutional Carry. Now permitted in 14 states including Idaho, my state. Anything else is an infringement on our 2nd amendment rights to keep and bare arms. The feds nor the states have the right to interpret the constitution for us by requiring any type of permit to carry a fire arm open or concealed. Look it up. That's Constitutional Carry.

This is great news. After moving across the border a few years ago, open carry was about the only thing I really missed while living in NC.

Texas has that backhanded open carry. You can only open carry IF you have a concealed carry permit....well if you have a concealed carry permit, you don't need to open carry....I think that's why you aren't seeing a lot of open carry ....the law has a big string attached to it....sorta makes it useless.
Polititans know how to fool you...they'll do it every time....vote them out next election.

I thought OC was shut down a few weeks ago in SC. Perhaps I am thinking of some other state.

Not sure what you're saying. Which border? And you shouldn't have missed open carrying while living in North Carolina...we've had open carry in NC since forever almost.

And there's really nothing "great" about this news, because open carry has not passed in SC. Don't know why folks keep thinking it has.

I should have mentioned this with my original post as some seem confused about what is going on here. H3930 is NOT open carry but constitutional carry, as in concealing a weapon without a permit. And again, it has passed the House and is now in the Senate. It is predicted that the Senators will let it die in committee. As I said, a cowards way out. Come reelection they get to say how they would have voted for it, but it just never came up for a vote.

Just wanted to add, know who your State rep's are? If not you should. I have contacted mine many times over this bill. My state house rep voted yes and my state senator said he will vote yes if it makes it to the floor. Email, powerful tool!

Why do they need a new law for this? Why not just remove the old law making it illegal?

I was born and raised in NC. Was working and living in Charlotte for 10 years and moved to upstate SC a few years ago. When I lived in NC I never open carried in public but would on my property and sometimes while in a vehicle if going on long trips. When I moved to SC and got my CWP here I was told that you couldn't even open carry a handgun on your property. So I put most of my OWB holsters in a box. This was also a real letdown for me as I have a few single action revolvers that I like to carry in traditional "quick-draw" holsters. If it passes it would be nice to start using some of those holsters again.

In S.C. it is legal to carry on your property. Open or concealed.

I would never worry about printing anyway. There are so many things people carry on their belts nowadays such as cell phones, Leatherman tools, flashlights, etcetera, hat there's no way anyone would be able to tell for sure that I am indeed carrying a gun, including the po-po.

Believe it or not, you can open carry in Connecticut, as long as you have a permit.

The permit is a carry permit, open carry or concealed carry.

There was some proposed legislation to restrict open carry, but it did not make it out of committee.

The whole open carry issue came to light about 10 years ago in Connecticut, literally right around the corner from where I work:
