Default Hidden Safe in Garage

I'd like to stash a gun in my garage. I figure hidden among the junk is best, but I want it to be locked and quickly accessible. Mounting a pistol safe in a room full of power tools and pry bars doesn't seem like such a smart move. But I'm not gonna stash a gun behind some paint cans or in a toolbox where my kids can find it one day.

Any ideas?

ok as soon as you said this this is the first thing i thought of, but i think i would splatter actual paint on it. so it can be ignored easily. Especially for a garage. Hidden in plain sight is usually the best.

Paint Can Concealment Safe, 1-Gallon, PSP - Top Gun Safes

Got a buddy that dedicated one drawer in his bench size tool box for a handgun. The drawer is kept locked with key in pocket. Not the quickest access but beats a gun in the house while messing around in the garage should an undesirable appear.

Interesting post - I've thought about putting a lock box out there several times ... But, as has been pointed out, that's where I also keep tools. I have thought about this more than a few times - and decided that I'll just use my EDC. I go out, early, every workday morning and use this routine: (feel free to laugh if you want) Exit house, and lock door into house, get into car and lock door, open garage door, start car and back out waiting for SHMBO. Ditto for coming back to the garage alone - but have to let her out when she returns cause our garage is small & she can't open door. Either way, I have an EDC with me every moment I am outide the house. I can't believe how many times I've read or heard about the potential for thugs to follow a car into the garage when someone returns home - all I can say to that is a person needs to maintain their situational awareness, and watch for that, before exiting the car.

I had a handgun hidden in the ceiling for 10 years in the back room (storage room). No one would have dreamed a gun was up there. Be creative.

Quickly accessible? I think that means on-body.

Mounted my safe upstairs, took 6 of us to get it up the stairs and over the hand rails. It will be there when I sell the house.

True, but if it't not even a consideration to be procured it is an option. Hiding is the element, locking is separate.. for example if you have a locking cabinet in your garage you can store something similar to it is a keyed cabinet.. throw it in with any spray paint or other cans of half used paint you already have. Anything obvious will cause someone to "check it out".

in my bedroom i have 400 cash hiding in plain sight and my wife can't find it.. i also keep a metal box with vintage cash (not worth anything except for face value) but she missed the cash sitting right in front of it against the actual drawer front.

I agree locking would be the best, but some of that stuff is outrageously priced and not large enough sometimes.. it was just a thought.

So true.

Some people may think I'm crazy, but both the door to my basement and the door to my garage are double key locked (i.e., key locks to open on both sides)... just so that some Godless miscreant trying to get into one of my safes won't have easy access to any of my tools.

Good point, my Garage is detached, and no one touces my "stuff" tools, cars, chemicals etc. so I guess the paint can would work for me but if its attached that can be tough too... There are some of the single gun fingerprint safes, but I wonder if you can mount it upside down under the counter and it not be cumbersome, depending on your work bench.

During X-Mas we stash presents in my 71 Mach 1, it has a cover on it most of the time, and everyone knows not to even lean on or look at it funny.. has been a great place to stash things over the years, as there is no "Trunk Release" from inside the car.

Be creative.

The simplest sometimes is the best .. attach a strong magnet under your work bench .. or your chair is a good spot .. or any other place you can think of that would suit you and attach pistol to it ..

e-bay is your friend numerous gun magnet sizes on it ..

Most thieves are in and out within 10 minutes. I have firearms stashed all over the house. If someone was to break in there is no way they will find all of them.

Here is a fake electrical panel. But definitely not quick access.

I would choose one of these wall safes and cover it with Pennzoil or Quaker State sign.

That may be true. But I wonder how you would feel knowing that the guns they did find were used in a murder? Or possibly used against you?

Fill a large bucket with sand, put the gun in a ziplock bag and shove it down in the sand. My Grandpop kept $10,000 in cash that way in the basement of his rowhouse in Philly. His rational was that people were unlikely to look in a old bucket of sand, plus the sand provided some protection from a fire.

I have thought about stashing a gun out in the garage, but it just seems easier to stick with the P32 in my pocket when working out there. It's a really large garage, so a single hidden gun could still be too far away if I needed it in a hurry.

As an aside:
I have an associate who owns and operates an Estate Sale Company. He was handling an estate in Paradise Valley here in the Phoenix area where the real wealthy live. In checking out the nooks and crannies on this large property he turned up over $1 million dollar in stashed cash. I've always wondered what he may have missed!

So would an LCP or an Airweight in your pocket

If you need a gun in your garage, carry it on you. There are many reasons:

(1) Stashing an unsecured weapon in arguably the most easily-burgled part of your house is unattractive. I can't imagine anything I'd like less than putting a CCW-able pistol on the street. Plus--you have kids. If you hide it, they're gonna find it.

(2) Are you going to check on it every day? Because if you're not, you've got a gun in a part of the house that's easily-accessed, that you don't spend a lot of time watching over, then you might not check on for days or weeks on end. When it gets stolen, you're not going to know about it.

(3) Locking it in a small safe in a room full of tools isn't the most secure thing in the world, as has been mentioned.

(4) If you need a gun in your garage, you're going to have absolutely zero warning--you're going to need it fast. Digging around in a hiding place or unlocking a safe isn't.

Console Vault has a wall safe that looks like an ordinary fuse box. $275 or so, but it is an interesting concept.

I from the old school that a hidden gun will be found sooner or later, and usually by a kid. All my grandkids are coming today so all guns are going to be locked up. If you want a gun in the garage why not pocket carry?

You could build it into the workbench and no one will notice after you have all kinds of junk laying on the bench.

You can put a lock on a drawer, metal or wood , they are called cabinet and drawer locks , go for $10.00 or less, stop in at your local safe and lock company , bring the drawer and they can probably fix you up and even install it for you.
I had a two door cabinet with two drawers that I wanted locks on , the fellow down at Safe and Lock place sold me the locks and showed me how to install them, then he keyed all 4 locks to open with 1 key, I went home and installed them with a drill and screwdriver...and I'm far from handy.

This one is bolted under a kitchen sink inside the cabinet, but would be easy to something similar in a garage.

These are kinda cool but, they're not exactly cheap and I'm not sure you'll find one that would blend in, in your garage.

Default Dirty Laundry

Aloha,

If your washer & dryer are located in the garage,

stick the gun in the Dirty underwear pile.

I doubt anyone will want to paw thru that.

When we rent a car, we've been known to throw new purchases under

used swim stuff and fast food rubbish in the back of the car.

Why not go with the "hidden in plain sight idea" and get yourself an electrical panel or control box, fit it with a cabinet lock and you have some minimal security (from kids at least) and it looks like it belongs in the garage.

There are several small lockbox type gun safes which will resist casual access. I would use one with a touch pad combination or biometric release, backed up with a key (batteries do wear out). It won't stop a determined burglar, but keep kids out. Most are designed to be bolted to another object, like a table, wall or part of an automobile. I'm thinking of a gun safe that has a pocket that swings out, and can be fastened vertically to a table leg or console.

In a larger sense, try to sort out the scenario in which you would need a hidden gun in your workspace. If you are surprised by an armed intruder, you won't have time to run and get your gun. This holds true for guns hidden in other parts of the house as well.

The purpose of a gun safe is to prevent casual access by children and clueless adults, and to delay theft or burglary attempts. Deny to the thief his most valuable asset - time. If you think you might need a gun, arm and barricade yourself. If you don't know, consider carrying a concealed weapon at home, inside and out.

I can appreciate that Muss. But at some point gun owners need to take some responsibility for the guns that end up on the street because they weren't locked up.

If things are really so bad that people feel that they need to stash guns all over the house then maybe they should simply carry on their person. The guns should be secured when you leave home.

But of course, that's merely my opinion. But then again, I don't know of anyone that leaves their keys in their car because they aren't worried about the criminal actions of others.

I take my keys because I don't want my car stolen, not because I'm worried that the thief may run down a line of innocent bystanders, which is the same reason that I take steps to secure my firearms . . .

Does your garage have sufficient temperature and humidity control to avoid rust on your guns year around?

I fail to see how you would be victimizing yourself by securing your guns. Is it that much of an inconvenience? Or is it the principle? And since when does inconvenience and principle get in the way of doing the right thing?

You know better than most about what happens with stolen guns once they hit street. Through the course of my job I have met dozens of people that have their guns stolen because they were not secured.

Unsecured guns is just another reason why the anti gun people hate us.

With all due respect, I think we agree to a point. And that's ok.

We do agree to a point, but you're missing mine. If I have stored my firearms in a manner that is legal, but not the Fort Knox Dreamland that many here attempt to create, and they get stolen, I'm not going to beat myself up over what the crook who stole them ultimately does with them. Others here would. If they're used in a murder, not my problem. I didn't steal them or pull the trigger . . .

Fair enough.

There are hollowed out books, made to accept various handguns. If you have a bookshelf in your garage perhaps this would be an option.

Yeah, I doubt many thieves are avid readers.

But . . . add my name to the list of those who would rather have it on my person than somewhere that might not be close enough if I ever needed it.

Today................. "they" can steal a car/truck, hatchet ....my Ka-Bar.... a nice 2.9" Benchmade or 4" utility Kershaw.....................even my son's baseball bat (LOL watching Season 7 of the Walking Dead)................... where do you draw the line?????

Back yard pools only require a 4 ft. fence...................... IIRC pools take more kids lives than guns .......if you don't count the intentional "gang/drug" related shootings of "kids".

Get an Old Toilet with Tank up high with the Pull Down Chain, and tape a revolver to the back of it.

Make sure to remind Clemenza to keep it 'Loud'.
