Default Sheer Panic

For about 5 minutes tonight. I had to go by my local Poilce office today so I sliped my Kel tec .380 pocket holster and all in my locked car gun safe. I was there at about 5:00 pm. Was only there for about 10 minutes. I have my cargo pants on today and that .380 in black hawk pocket holster gets lost in those deep pockets.Any way at about 9 :30 I went to lightly tap pocket. Sheer panic for about 3 to 5 mins. I tearing cushions off couch and running around in panic. The it hit me the lil .380 was locked in car safe whew !!. This is the very 1 st time I have done this been carrying a very long time. Ok lets hear your panic story. My wife thought I was nuts I was speachless

A few years ago I was looking for a couple rifles I had not seen in a long time. I searched all 'storage' areas and still could not find them. This was really disturbing as I have a good understanding of what I own and where they are but these two were gone. Ok - I forgot about a particular secure area I remember using, went to it immediately, and there they were - I guess this was a really good spot as I could not remember putting them there!

I'm 79 and have too many with not enough room to print. They don't all involve firearms!

Default Sheer Panic

I had one missing for a while. I found it. I forget which one.
My GF keeps a piece of paper in her console to place on her dash to remind her she needs to fill up. It says GAS. You need one that says GUN to remind yourself you've disarmed. Write GAS on the other side. Just don't mix them up.

There is key points where they should have same laws. Natiowide. My view being in Florida for 55 years pretty much has it covered. Some here want to be abel to carry in full bars. I dont go there but dont think thats a good idea.

I also carry a small Kel-Tec,usually pocket carry. One day after work, having already changed into my house clothes, I realized I had left my P32 in my work coveralls...and the wife was doing laundry! I just stopped her in time. Irresponsible..but no harm done. However, a good scare. I'm pretty sure the little gun would have been no worse off after a thorough cleaning...

Yes I have their .32 model too. The .380 & .32 have been very reliable.

Nope. Not illegal here.

This right here is why I asked.

wingriderz answered, very politely thank you, that it's the law in Fl and that was what I was curious about. I admit that I was vague in my questioning so, I apologize to you all for that. What I was looking for, and received, was the FUD that it's completely unthinkable to carry concealed into a police station.

While I'm sure there are several states or municipalities that have laws or ordinances against such (and I would follow those laws), it is not a universal sin to carry into a police station. Neither is the phrase "it's illegal to carry into a federal building" completely correct. That's a discussion for a different thread.

wingriderz, you handled the situation correctly. I also appreciate your coming here to tell us. It's a good reminder that it's easy to become complacent with our firearms. Especially when we carry regularly. Thank you for telling us and I'm glad it turned out to be nothing. We are all better for hearing it.

A few years ago my wife my daughter and I went to D.C. for a sightseeing trip. This was a couple years after 9-11.
Our vehicle was less than reliable but we went anyhow and I as a concerned father/husband took my KelTec P3AT along in my right front pocket in case we broke down en-route.
I don't remember what I was looking for but we wound up on the Pentagon campus where it is clearly posted "No firearms" etc.
My wife knows I carry but didn't put 2 and 2 together when she suggested I go ask the security guards how to get out of there. They were the last 2 people I wanted to have a face to face with.
I played the usual man thing that "I don't need to ask directions" until she got fed up and went herself.
We left without incident but the very next day we were on the same road looking for the same exit. My wife insisted the take the same turn we took the day before because "We must have missed the turn" that we were looking for and damned if I didn't wind up in the exact same pace I as the day before.
I don't know what the penalty is for carrying on Pentagon property pu I imagine it isn't a slap on the wrist and a "Naughty naughty"

I'll bet it's actually less than a slap on the wrist depending on your reaction. My experience with military installations is that they usually give you the option to leave. Believe it or not, military police and contractors are usually nice guys just trying to do a job. They've done their job if they keep illegal activities under control. Thus, you leaving meets their mandate.

At least that's how all the innocent gun incidents I know of have been handled. I'm sure it also depends on the zealousness of the particular policeman.

A couple of years ago I was shooting winter league skeet. After an evening of shooting a bunch of us were chit chatting on the porch of the club house. Grabbed my gun case and headed home. Had a beer and was watching TV when I decided to let my target gun warm up and throw a coat of oil on it. Opened my green canvas boyt case and there was a beat up old Remington 1100. Not my Beretta 682 gold sporting. Uh oh. I remembered a guy shooting this gun but had no idea of his name. Honestly I think my girlfriend was more freaked out than I was. She kept asking what was I gonna do. I said not much I can do, I'm sure it will work out. Sure enough the next week there was a note on the clubhouse bulletin board.

Wrong in Missouri. A commonly held misconception. Check your local laws, but my quick read of Iowa statutes says you can carry into a PD in Iowa. #stopkneejerkreactions

In 1985, I was assigned to a DEA task force and was issued a Colt Detective Special .38. When I went to leave for duty in the morning, I could not find my Detective Special.....Tore the house apart, but could not find it. I go out to my car, and there it was in the IWB holster, up on the dash board in plain open view. Mind you, I was parked on the street and the car was unlocked! Either I was a lucky guy, or people walking by thought it was some type of setup??
In any event, I learned a valuable lesson and threw an extra dollar in the collection basket at church the next Sunday.
YES, I had SHEER PANIC the rest of the day and into that evening.

We had a county cop who works at the airport leave his in the toilet not too long ago. Made the paper and all 3 local news outlets.
Unfortunately, not out of the "norm".

A couple of years ago my wife and I had to stop by the courthouse to drop off papers, we parked I took off my glock and mags, and any thing metal (detector at the door). I asked her if she was carrying, she said no, I asked again, she said NO! Got to the detector ran her purse through, and they ran it again, and they ran it again, that was 3 times, they asked if anything in it? She said no, after a search her NAA 22mag out of the bottom! I heard one call for the Sargent to the door! OH ****. He was very nice about it looked at our permits. And said if this was a different county she'd be going to jail. We thanked him and learned a lesson!

From Missouri Statute 571.107: 1. Permit Does Not Authorize Concealed Firearms, Where: (1) Any police, sheriff, or highway patrol office or station without the consent of the chief law enforcement officer in charge of that office or station.

LOL.... I just renewed my Pa carry permit........ for years 40-45......9th time in 4 different Pa. Counties.......4th time in Allegheny Co.

The Sheriffs "Permit Office"is in the Basement of the Allegheny Co. Courthouse. The place was empty except for a clerk and 2 Deputies....usually there is a line of 8-10 folks waiting or filling out forms.

So I jokingly mentioned that I've always found it funny that I couldn't carry concealed (in the Courthouse) while getting my concealed carry permit renewed.

The Deputy said...."You can carry here..... that's why we have our own sub office with it's own outside entrance. If you need to go into the court house proper there are lock boxes at the main entrance."

PS: This is not legal advice......... the answer you get from another Deputy may be different!!!!!!!

Missouri is a constitutional carry state now. No permit required. All of those provisions in .107 deal with carrying on a permit. Also, if you read further, you will see that a violation of 571.107 is not a criminal act . . .

Here is Missouri Statute 571.030 that covers permitless carry, and it refers to the same list of prohibited locations in 571.107. So it is illegal to carry into a police station without permission, with or without a permit. If done with a permit, the penalty is less severe.

Unlawful use of weapons--exceptions--penalties.

571.030. 1. A person commits the offense of unlawful use of weapons, except as otherwise provided by sections 571.101 to 571.121, if he or she knowingly:

(1) Carries concealed upon or about his or her person a knife, a firearm, a blackjack or any other weapon readily capable of lethal use into any area where firearms are restricted under section 571.107

Yeah, not a real panic attack story but I couldn't find one of my guns for 2-3 years (I forget exactly how many). It was my old Bodyguard .38 Special which was kept in a secure place not far from my front door. Well, when I remarried and my wonderful wife moved in, a lot of changes were made. Things got moved around. In fact, everything in the house either got moved around or got thrown out. The next time I went to check on the Bodyguard, it was not where it belonged. What the heck???

I looked and looked but never found it. I know it hadn't left the house because I lived alone since I owned it and my good wife (fully-licensed now) would never have taken it. It had to have been put into one of my safes after she moved in. Still, I couldn't locate it.

Fast forward to about a year ago, give or take, and I ask my good wife about it for the umpteenth time... but this time she actually pays attention to me and tells me directly "It's exactly where you left it... where you've always stored it"! Sure enough, it was right there. It had magically reappeared. Well, maybe not so much magic. When the good wife moved in, my secure spot had gotten shifted somewhat and then covered-up by her stuff. Mama Mia!

Lesson learned. It now resides in one of my safes per our onerous new "safe storage" law. Not ideal for home defense, but at least I'll never "lose" it again.

Let's just say black gun socks and black door and shelf liner in the safe have lead to a couple of uh, anxious moments.

Misplacing one like that will cause a panic for sure. Don't ask me how I know.

Thumbs up

Not me and not "sheer panic" but kind of funny none the less. My BIL was an investigator for a Public Defenders office in a large state. One day on his way into the courthouse for a trial he kept setting off the metal detector. He "knew" he had locked his carry piece in the trunk of the car and told the officers at the entrance that all he had on him was his holster. He reached inside the rear of his suit jacket and instead of his holster his hand closed on the but of his S&W 469.

He said he kind of froze and considered his options. Apparently, in addition to freezing he uttered the phrase, "oh s$#t" or words to that effect. All ended well as the deputies all knew him and kind of found it funny. He ended up giving his pistol to the head deputy who secured it until he was ready to leave the courthouse so he won't be late for the trial.

Default Iwas missing one of my guns...

I tried not to panic, but over a couple of days I checked everywhere I keep things. I can't remember exactly where I found it, but I just remembered where I put it, held my breath and voila. There it was.

LOL...Panic what Panic.. this morning I was looking for a couple of guns I want to take to the NE Ohio Bunching next weekend........

Found the 2" round butt blue 10-7 right where I thought is would be; but couldn't find a 2" Nickel 10-7, I thought/expected them to be "together"................found it after about an hour ...... mislabeled.

Looking for a 1948 K-22 Masterpiece....... though it had the box.....so I was looking for a 'boxed" gun.......... no luck..... cus

I was WRONG ....... the 1957 Pre-17 Masterpiece has the box not the 48.

Finally got it sorted out..........

Lol.... I accidentally carried when I went to vote last November. Double whammy-polling booth AND a school. I didn't think about it till walking by the officer standing at the exit as I left, looking at his Glock and thinking "oh $%&! I didn't unholster." Oh well. I was in and out in less than 3 minutes.

It's ok to carry in a police station in Michigan, as long as the station area does not incorporate a court house. You also can't enter secured areas ie; jail cells, etc.

There are some departments in Wayne County, Michigan, that post firearms are not allowed. However, I do not think it's legally enforceable, just their desire for you not to do so. They had some previous incidents, where an armed citizen entered a station, and shot up the place pretty bad. I would respect their request, and I wouldn't want to be the one to test it. But again, I do not think it's an enforceable law.

I carry into the Macomb County Sheriff's office, as well as the Richmond PD frequently, without fear of any consequences.

Funny thing is my panic attack is somewhere right in the middle of some of y'all's. Omitting the police station discussion (maybe some states allow it; most don't) but on a parallel, I was invited to a Navy retirement ceremony for a colleague so I took my shotgun out of my trunk and my junky Kel-Tec P9 out of the car before I headed to the Navy base. When I got home I didn't think about it again until after the weekend.

I cannot recall if it was Monday or Tuesday....I went to my car and as I opened the passenger door I could not recall if I had hit the button on the key fob to open it or if I found it unlocked. Nothing was disturbed inside the car.

[[Just weird because I was not, and still am not, totally used to modern cars with electric door opening devices (and I have had three of those now!). My other vehicle is an old truck, still have it, still drive it, very used to its non-power everything, and believe me there is nothing on it that works by pushing a button.]]

So I open the console..........NO KEL-TEC!!!!!!!!!!! I check the trunk. No shotgun. I go into the house and check the closet where I tossed the shotgun - sure enough, there it is. Where is the Kel-Tec? Did I or did I not retrieve it and put it in the console? As a matter of course I always do that (not any more....) so, DID I??

YIKES!!!!!!!!!!!!

I never found it. Searched everywhere! I filed a stolen gun report with the PD, told them exactly the situation, and they said I did the right thing, that if I really lost it in a drawer at home just let them know if it turns up.

WHAT A DUNCE!

I won't ever know if that gun was actually stolen or not unless I literally do find it or the PD calls to tell me they have it.

Sigh.............gettin' old ain't fer sissies..........

Yeah, me too! Like Iggy said, as I get older, it becomes more of a challenge. Got ready for bed a while back and when I dropped my britches, my IWB holster was EMPTY! Sat down and retraced my steps. Last stop before coming home was at the US Post Office. I remembered that I had removed my EDC and placed it in the console of my truck. I was in the parking lot in front of the building when I did so, and that's a risk I'm willing to take since stopping on the frontage road where the PO is located is not possible. I figure if I don't wear it in the building, AND I live in Texas where most LEO's tend to understand the reason we all carry, I figure there's room for a bit of understanding if the gun never leaves the vehicle. Might bite me, but I'm very careful not to unload under anyone's watchful eye!
So I was in a bit of a hurry since my favorite cook is never really pleased if supper is ready and I ain't sittin' down ready and waitin' and supper gets cold! If she's a bit late gettin' it on the table, that's acceptable. But if it's on the table, and I want her to be smilin' when I sit down, that better happen no later than when it's on the table!! Everybody knows, or should know that you don't aggravate the cook, especially if she's a good one. They don't call me Pudge for nuthin'!!!
Anyway, you probably guessed already that I jumped in the truck and beat feet for home without reholstering my EDC. Didn't realize it until bedtime. I was pretty sure where the gun was when I discovered it missing. But I had to get dressed again enough to go outside in the cold and retrieve it, and I admit I breathed a sigh of relief when I found it still there. Lots of guns stolen every year in my place of residence and the large majority of them are stolen from vehicles, and surprisingly many of those vehicles are unlocked. (Ever returned to your vehicle that you ALWAYS lock and found it .... UNLOCKED!) Quite a few vehicles are stolen as well, and a great many of those are trucks!
Considering my increasing level of "CRS" these days, I was fortunate to be able to remember where and when I unholstered and where my EDC likely was. But ..... I sure would have had a very unnecessary feeling had I needed my EDC/ADC in a hurry sometime in the approximately 5 hours between the PO and bedtime!!! Not a good feeling at all for me!! So I went to bed without cookies and milk to help me remember to remember.

I've had a few other unnecessary feelings over time, and I hate them! It's really easy to get complacent when you carry all the time, but not doing so is something that we all need to make job one! Be sure you load up when you put your britches on, and then proceed through the day making sure you reload when it's necessary to unload for any reason. It's just as bad to forget to unload as it is to forget to remember to reload as soon as possible!!!

So first of all, cops are civilians. Second I, as a civilian, am absolutely permitted to carry at the El Paso County Sheriff's Office and every place but the secured area of CSPD Station.

I had a moment of sheer panic in 1984. I was in an enforcement operation on the Souther Border. We were a month of flying into every Port of Entry, every other day. Some airlines were very understanding and allowed us to carry aboard. Texas International required that the firearms were unloaded and locked in a suitcase and placed in the cargo hold. When we arrived in El Paso the team was involved in subduing a 350 lb. suspect who had a .357 revolver and an ounce of heroin. It required three people to disarm him and take him into custody when we discovered the pistol on him. When I got back to the motel I took off my holster and pistol and discovered that I had failed to reload after taking the pistol out of my luggage. My knees buckled. At that point I was 50 years old . I had carried in the Marine Corps, the Border Patrol and now in U.S. Customs but never made such a dangerous mistake. What it that has been said about getting older? I thought about all of that.

PS: This is not legal advice......... the answer you get from another Deputy may be different!!!!!!!
When I lived in Bucks County Pa I always carried in Court House, IF you had to go in court Room ( Jury duty ) there was a lock box, with a Deputy there. This was in the 1991, I do not live there now and do not know if the laws have changed. As stated before, all states have their own laws. Be Safe,
