Default M&P40 and bobcat

My son and I were working down in yard today when we saw a bobcat
come out of the woods and went behind the shed. My son got his Detroit marked M&P40 out of the truck about the time it came around the corner and growled at and came at me, three shots later at ten yards a dead bobcat, more than likely rabid. I have seen a lot of bobcats but never had one come at me.

I've always wondered, what would you do with a suspected rabies carcass.

Call the Wildlife office ?

That would be a good place to start, John. What ever your state's game and fish and wildlife agency is called. I might also call the county Sheriff's office. Since the bobcat is not a domestic animal but a usually protected species, the game department should want to know. Either way, a suspected rabid animal would or should be of great interest to authorities. It is highly unusual for a bobcat not to scat when it comes into contact with humans. In fact, most of the time, they are well aware of you before you ever become aware of them. Most often, they see you or know you are there and you don't every know they are close at hand. I would also be very suspect that this animal is rabid.

Years ago, my two Rottweilers killed a fox that had wandered into their yard during a snowstorm.

I called Animal Control. They came and got the fox. Although I didn't know if my dogs had been bitten, I took them to the vet for a rabies booster shot.

Animal Control called me the next day to notify me the fox was not rabid. Poor fox, he just wandered into the wrong yard at the wrong time, that's all.

We did call the game warden and he said thanks for letting them know but could not do anything with it. We dug a deep hole and burred it.

I would think your local health dept. would send it off for testing.

I hope you used "universal precautions" when dealing with the corpse. At a minimum, gloved up, bleached the area and yourselves, washed very carefully, etc.

If there is Rabies in the wild in your area beware of Skunks and Raccoons along with Foxes .. those seem to be the animals most effected around us ..
