Not sure exactly when it happened but I heard this a few days ago-and-now those new to getting their LTC's will only have to pay $40-instead of well over $100.00 to get their LTC.

I haven't been playing close attention, but I think the class requirements were also lowered. Since I'm not moving there (yet) and don't need a non resident permit, I've been only loosely following the LTC process.

Maybe by the time I get to move TX will be a Constitutional Carry state and I won't have to worry about it at all. After all, three years ago open carry didn't seem likely.

BTW, where did you see that? The DPS still shows $140.00 for an initial license and $70.00 for a renewal.

Yes - from $140 to $40. Renewal is cheaper too, but can't remember how much. Also, class used to be 10 hours, and I think is cut to 4 or 6.

According to the NRA-ILA, It passed both the Senate and the House (with a House amendment) last week. It has not (yet) been signed by the Governor, but he'll definitely sign it.

Also, I haven't heard WHEN it would go into effect... Possibly the next fiscal year? Hopefully sooner.

I wouldn't hold my breath about Texas becoming a Constitutional carry state any time soon, since it took them about 125 years to reinstate open carry. And even then, you still have to have the license to carry. Texas isn't the gun owners' paradise lots of folks think it is

Last year Tennessee reduced rates. Initial permit fee is now $100 and good for 8 years. Costs $50 to renew every 8 years. At anytime you can now upgrade to a lifetime permit for $200 which was also reduced from $500. At $200... for me to break even I'd have to live for another 32 years after my current permit requires renewal so I'll probably pass on the lifetime. Eh... maybe I'll get one just to have one. But if I pay the $200 I figure Tennessee will go to Constitutional Carry within 10 minutes after my CC is charged. Anyone else have my kinda luck?

I was surprised to read that Texas requires an annual renewal fee. That sounds like a hassle resulting in a lot folks forgetting and having their permit expire???

My county in Virginia charges $15 for a permit. It is good for 5 years. Renewals are also $15.

Yes, a permit/LTC is still needed, but for the very most part, Texas is a very gun friendly state. Most folks don't go all spastic if they happen to notice that you are carrying, and where I happen to live, there is a noticeably large number of the citizens who are carrying themselves. If you've got a lick of common sense, I have found that carrying here is a pretty comfortable proposition. I don't really mind having the LTC, since it helps when I travel out of state, and presenting it along with my driver's license takes most of the worry about any contact with an LEO. And I sure appreciate the things that have been done previously and at this present time to make it easier and cheaper to have an LTC. And I can also tell you that a surprisingly large number of the females I know are also carrying, both on their persons and especially in their autos. So be polite!!!

The House has to approve the two Senate amendments and then it will probably head to the Governor's desk. Gov. Abbott is VERY Pro 2A, so I expect he'll sign it.

A Texas LTC is good for five years, so that's a pretty cheap price for a license.

My current permit expires Sept. 2021. I would have to live to be 97 to break even on the $200 lifetime permit, I think I will pass on it.

There is no annual renewal that I am aware of. Perhaps a specialty instructor or security agent permit (???), but mine was multi-year. Being over 60, I got the lesser price. I could have gotten it for even less, but getting all the supporting legal docs from the state where I worked cost more than the savings.

Looks like Texas Tribune didn't get it right. When I read that it just sounded like too much of a burden. Heck, I should know better than bother to read sources other than the NRA.

Gun owners/ gun carrying paradise is " Arizona " ! NO permit required for open carry or conceal carry . I should know as I lived there , off and on for almost 60yrs .

Oh yes Arizona is the gun carrying paradise. No permit for concealed nor open carry, and a CCW is still available for reciprocity.

I think Constitutional Carry is dead in the water? I havent heard anything else on it. As for class fees? I havent heard if they have been lowered at all? mine was $125 or $150--I now forget which? My Nephew was the one that told me the lowering had been passed, but I havent had time to think of looking into it lately. Ill see if I can find out more but cant today as I have another job interview this afternoon.

Ive been given word by several who for the last couple of months--said it was in the works to be lowered to $40. Next time I get in touch with my Nephew--ill ask for more passage details. His Range Instructor was the one who told him that the lowering had been passed. I dont know if it's in effect yet? so might be why the DPS site hasnt listed it yet?

Ive heard renewal will be $25, but nothing set in stone from the grapevine.

Im noticing more and more open carry here. One place that im sad to say-discourages it-is my gym. Most of the people are current or former Law Enforcement, Govt employees, business owners etc.

Until the bill is signed by the Governor, it isn't law. At that time, the law would probably go into effect after Sept. 1, 2017. as do most signed bills.

$50.00. Just last year I paid $20.00 in Berks County for a PA LTC, good for five years. I thought that the $20.00 fee was set by the state.

In PA, licenses are issued by the county sheriff and are shall issue. The only discretion that the sheriff has is whether or not he'll issue to non county residents. Some do, some don't.

My license at the Reading Airport substation took 10 minutes from the moment I walked in til I walked out with the license in my wallet.

It was $20 and on a simple piece of paper but then they changed it to look like a DL and price went to $50.

I thought the fee was set by the legislature, but apparently not. Mine is also on plastic like a DL. BTW, Bucks County will not process out of county resident applications.

Good to see the fees are going down for license and renewal.

Sure would be nice for the fee for the change of address to drop as well. Moved last year and drivers license change of address fee was $11, while the CHL was $25. Kind of exorbitant for a piece of plastic.

I never tried to get one out of county. Never even thought about it. I live 3 miles from the main courthouse and work 6 miles from the Sheriff's sub station

Not trying to hijack the thread but SB263 also passed, waiting on the gov's signature. It allows a new LTC applicant to use a .22LR for the range qualification versus the previous .32 caliber minimum.

For some personal reasons, this was welcome news for me.

So much WINNING and I'm not the least bit sick of it!

Maybe now I can convince my daughter to take the class and get her LTC.

The license is also valuable when purchasing a gun from a dealer - no potentially lengthy phone check is necessary - you are already "vetted."
