Smith and Wesson 637 38 special
I am considering purchasing a s&w 637 to carry concealed and when hunting. One of the main reasons is the weight. I am looking for input from users with experience.

Exposed hammers can snag on the draw from concealment. I'd recommend a 638. Right below this post you're going to see people disagree, saying the exposed hammer is no problem. To each their own. My 637-2 clattering across the floor convinced me.

I've got a 637-2 that is mostly my BUG. I did bob the hammer spur on mine to keep it from snagging. Actually, I bought another hammer and bobbed it and kept the orginal, but I digress.
I like my 637 a lot. Easy to take care of, even though eventually the finish is probably gonna come off, I've been lucky in that area.
The gun is accurate for me at self defense distances. I've never had a bit of trouble with mine. And, oh yeah, I can still shoot it SA. I just catch the hammer with my thumb and pull back. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the reply. I rented the 638 at a local range. It shot well but the sights need improvements

Exposed hammers could be a serious problem in a deadly confrontation. If you can get the gun at a good price the hammer can be bobbed. I use only concealed or bobbed hammer revolvers for ccw.

637
I like my 637 because of the hammer; can easily thumb the hammer back for single action. I carry it in a Bianchi model 56 with a retention strap. Carry it on an ATV at our place everyday. Hunting? No, not for me, unless I see an armadillo. There's not much I want to shoot with a 38 cal.

The 638 does have single action capability. As far as sights go, the 637 and 638 and most other new J frames will have the same sights.

I paint my sights. They are a lot better when you can see them easy.

I carry the S&W 640 in pocket or holster. Internal hammer and all steel construction, and the ability to pop in a shot cartridge in case of snakes.
A little heavy yes, but I like the solid "big gun" feel.
Mine in the middle and two for the Mrs.

I have had about 10 J frames at one time or other. All of them with exposed hammers. I gave my Daughter my last M-37 Nickel and I kept my Nickel M-36 square butt. I now carry every day my M-642-1.
I think from now on, any J frame .38 I get will be the 642 series. The smooth profile and easy use and carry of it just seems right.

Mine has crimson trace laser grips for increased accuracy. For concealed carry I usually just put it in my back pocket if I'm not planning on sitting down. For woods and/or motorcycle carry I use a blackhawk serpa holster and it's not going anywhere. The exposed hammer doesn't bother me. I like the option of firing it single action.

I bought a Charter Arms .44 special. It was about the same weight but larger grips. I like the larger diameter bullets
