I use an Alessi Ghost IWB for the J Frame in an appendix position. I love this holster as it was designed to not need a belt. So it's perfect for summer (or anytime) IWB carry.

Or if my shorts have big enough front pockets I'll use a MIKA OR SAFARILAND pocket holster

Also I'm curious since I have a 36 - 1 Smith square butt: do you have trouble concealing the square butt of the cobra? I find that the square butt of the Smith I have to push down lower if I'm carrying appendix compared to the 36 no dash round butt I have.[/QUOTE]

It hides pretty well but not like my 442 which disappears.

Well, I think that this link will show a picture of the holster: D Hume Jit 1 S&w K Frame Brn Rh .

I will try to attach a photo of the 12. it would be a day or two before I could make and upload and compress and post a photo of my holster (black) and gun together.

To answer njr's question, close but not quite. I was once 5 feet 11 inches, but I have surely shrunk a half inch or more by now. Note my comment that it's all about pocket size. That's not completely true. My 12 with service grips conceals in more trousers than my Model 15 with Rogers/Safariland grips, which I have also carried in the front pocket of my Dockers, with the same holster.

Very informative, thankyou all. While my primary carry has always been a full sized 1911 of the Springfield Armory Mil-Spec or Kimber Raptor variety, I've found at times a full sized simply doesn't cut it due to it's size. I do have a VERY beautiful blued Mod 36LS, but it's so beautiful I can't get myself to carry it so I went and found a Mod 36 no dash nickel plated J frame. It's quite a nice little puppy, lockup is as tight as a custom piece, no turn line, it does have a little tarnishing of the nickel finish by the top of the grips, best of all I got her for 337 OTD.

Here's my question:

What's the best holster for this? I prefer leather, and always use an IWB model.

Would you guys/gals who use the J frame daily recommend an IWB or opt for an OWB with a thumbsnap?

Thanks in advance

Default So simple.

My preferred j-frame carry, all seasons, is via a Remora. No clip Remora, to be specific.

In Chicago for a few days and wandered from the The Drake to Navy Pier and back with a few stops in between. On foot, of course.

8138 steps; 3.0 miles.

Shorts and TUCKED polo shirt...IWB, STRONG SIDE. Reversible dress belt from Kohl's.

Gun was undetectable. And did not move.

Be safe.

My year round J frame carry is a 442-2 in a Uncle Mike's pocket holster. A speed strip in the same pocket and a Galco 2x2x2 ammo pouch worn at 2:00 cover any reloading need that might happen. My belt guns are usually compact or full size Glock .40s or a service size 4" .38 sixgun. The speed strip and belt pouch will feed any size .38 I choose to carry.

I've got a great leather IWB inbound. For some reason I've never been a fan of Kydex or CF for holsters, call me old fashioned, but everyone of my 46 years worth of 55g drum holsters are leather.

In Arizona, the summer heat demands lightweight accessories. Here is my summer survival equipment - everything I think I might need.

The little light is a Four Sevens Preon P1, and clips into my shirt pocket right next to the pen I would use to write down license plate numbers as necessary. It's VERY bright - enough to light up the neighborhood or blind an attacker after dark. The 642 goes in my Levis right front pocket, no holster required with the Barami hip-grips that are on it hooked over the lip of the pocket to expose just the handle for quick access. Any tail-out shirt works fine to cover it.

The little .22 North American revolver is a latch-ditch "surprise" backup if necessary, and the Benchmade Elishewitz folder knife is a backup to that - never needs reloading. The GI pocketknife is an all-purpose tool that has come in handy many times - particularly when I need to de-cap a bottle of Heinekin!

The cell phone isn't smart, but it IS a phone to call 911 when and if. It's quite small and light.

John

I either carry my 36-1 3" barrel in my Holster World IWB holster and a speed strip with Winchester defend hollowpoints

or my 637 in my Bianchi 100 holster again, with speed strip, and Winchester Defend hollowpoint.

believe it or not, the 3" in the HW holster is more comfortable to carry- the Bianchi holds the snubby a little higher, but it's still not bad.
