A .22 in the hand beats a .45 in the safe any day of the week. I have a few .22 guns that I'd feel more thsn confident carrying. My favorite though is my 1961 made Walther PPK that came in before the 1968 GCA. A real interesting thing is that it was a CIA gun. My Uncle Mario, upon fleeing Cuba was hired by the CIA and helped organize and took part in the Bay of Pigs. After it was all said and done, they told him go buy yourself a gun, we'll pay you back. So we went and bought that and carried it throughout his career. Why a .22? Because in Latin America, where he worked, a .22 was common among the citizenry. Especially when he was stationed in Mexico, Venezuela, and Argentina.

It wouldn't look out of place by the local authorities for a man of money (he acted as a well to do Cuban from Miami doing business in Latin America) to be carrying such a gun, especially when the State Department made sure he had all the legal documents for carrying.

Anyways, he retired and gave it to me.

Beretta Model 20. Tip up barrel, .25 center fire is reliable. Higher round count than a J-frame. Tiny, little recoil. DA/SA.

My former neighbor; retired LEO and member of this forum, is an arthritic oldster, and made the decision to start carrying a Beretta Bobcat21A in .22LR about 5 years ago. He loves it, and says it's fun to shoot. And feels very well protected to boot.

Hello, I have a mp22 fs and compact, the wife loves and took possession of the compact. She carries in her purse. We were target shooting and I asked her to pull out her compact and empty it ( to rotate ammo) so she pulls it out and click, no bang, a rack and again click, a total of 3 ( the first 3) failures of the magazine. So she is back to packing a model 60.

The .22 LR is extremely lethal due to the high velocity and the fact that it glances off bones in the body and and still manages to move in and through the internal organs. I can imagine the .22 LR HP is even more deadly.

My only objection to the .22 is that it is a rimfire, and they tend to be less reliable than center fire. I have been contemplating the same thing as I "mature", and have come to the conclusion that a .32 is the way to go should I experience the same as the OP. They didn't call those old hand ejectors "Regulation Police" for nothing, and properly loaded the .32 S&W Long can give fairly decent terminal results with minimum recoil.

My LGS has an H&R 649 that is calling my name. It's definitely used and he wants $199. I haven't handled it or asked if he'd come down. Didn't see a magnum cylinder. Seems like it would make a reliable carry gun and you wouldn't have to worry if something happened to it.

I have a new one that I have yet to get more than three rounds fired in a row without some type of malfunction. That is with several mags and many ammo types.

While my 21A bobcat is a pile of well made junk. My Tomcat .32 eats anything I throw at it. I have been rethinking my hate stance on the .25acp and might buy a 950 or 21 in .25acp
