My kind of Marine. From combat experience I can say he is right about move and shoot and get to cover. I don't agree that a SD weapon must have a 4 describing the aclaiber. More important to have a round that you can be consistently accurate with while rapidly firing. Semper Fi to that DI.

Sage advise, I agree w/everything he said and especially carry enough ammo for the fight. During my 30 year LEO career I ran out of ammo in the midst of a gunfight. It made a lasting impression in that I'm NEVER without at least one reload and have more in the car. It may seem silly for a 70 y/o retiree who no longer goes in harm's way but some experiences change you forever.

A young man, or anyone for that matter, would do well to have a few campfires with this gentleman.

Interesting Situational Awareness is first on my list and not on his at all !!
Most of his rules would be good for Combat and for knowing you will be in a gun fight but putting them to civilian self defense methods would be troublesome ..
Your not going to be running for cover .. more then likely it will be up close and personal within 3 to 5 feet .. with someone trying to rob you in a parking lot or store .. car jack your car .. or kicking in the door of your domain in the middle of the night !!

Situational awareness and avoidance is at the top of my list. Failing that being mentally prepared to defend myself and those around me with whatever is at hand is a top priority.
Having a weapon on my person, or better yet in my hand, when the time comes to need defense of life is better than picking up a brick.
