Default Gun in checked bag...relatively bad ending.

Relatively as in bag was broken beyond repair but gun was secure.

Flew via Southworst to Boston for the NCAA lacrosse championships. Am a huuuuuuge fan/supporter of the University of Maryland Women's Lacrosse Team. YOUR National Champions for now the 14th time!

Flew from BWI to Boston Logan. No problems whatsoever at check in. And TSA Pre Check rocks.

Upon arrival the hard sided Samsonite suitcase was open on one side with the latch locked but that caused the other lock release to be jammed. Southworst baggage claim personnel were utterly useless. Could not even produce tools that would allow me to open it on site. After photos and damage claim filed proceeded to hotel where I borrowed pliers, hammer, and screwdriver to open it. Gun was intact.

Still no resolution of my claim. Bag cannot be repaired. This is why I avoid Southworst unless it it the ONLY viable option.

So how did I get home with a gun onboard?

Via this... Bombardier Global 6000. Aircraft owned by very kind friends.

Be safe.

Glad it worked out in the end.

I have to ask, though: you flew from Maryland to Massachusetts with a pistol in your luggage---you must be LEO. Or, one of the lucky few with permits in both Maryland and Mass?

I flew with my pistol last summer from PA to GA. No problems whatsoever.

Well, that's one way to avoid airport security and large primate baggage handling. Sounds as though someone shut the aircraft loading door on it, or it got jammed in the conveyor belt system.

I use a related travel method for this, it is called my "car" - it even has leather seats . Glad to hear everything worked out, except for your bag.

With the PITA factor added to the ....... hour drive to the airport, 30 minutes to park get to terminal...... 2hour preflight security.... air travel time........ rent a car/taxi to hotel or wherever... killing time post meeting till flight time.........flight home...... get car and drive an hour home.....................

doesn't take any longer to drive and a lot less stress and hassle to just drive to anything inside .....DC, Phila., Cleveland.......OBX

I've flown with my sidearm & ammunition in checked baggage many times....never had a problem.

Side story....my SIL was flying out of Nashville.
He's checking his unloaded/cased sidearm with personnel at the ticket counter,
agent ask, 'How much ammo he had with him, SIL says,
one small box of 25 rounds...ticket agent sez,
Sir you can only have 11 pounds of ammunition in checked luggage'.....

That consonant thing has been the downfall of many a conversation .

Whoever took the picture during the barrel-roll did a good job keeping the camera steady.

It's not a high bar to jump over and it probably varies by region, but I find Southwest does a better job than any of the other carriers that fly around the Central U.S. At least around here not deserving the title "Southworst."

When I flew from Dulles to Copenhagen, Denmark with my model 15-2, model 19-3, model 27-8, model 28-2, and model 686 no dash, it was a breeze. I don't want to divulge too much information, maybe it was because all my export and import paperwork was in order. But they seemed more concerned about my dog and that her 15 digit microchip matched her travel documents. I flew Delta.

I see that nobody answered your question but did tell war stories about flying with guns... the obvious answer is to buy a new suitcase.

Default I did!

Traveled to Las Vegas and Chicago where I am presently. Should have noted that, I reckon. See my 'Gun in checked bag...interesting (?) new information' thread.

Bag is Samsonite Tru-Frame. Very light...two (2) built in TSA locks. Hardsided, of course.

Has weathered the travels very well via United.

Be safe.
