Concealed carry for bicyclists?

Do any of you have a comfortable solution for carrying a small snubbie while riding a bicycle? The best I have found is a small belly bag, but I'd be interested in other solutions that have been found to be comfortable.

If you run a Forum search you will find other discussions on this subject. Ideas run the gamut from T-shirt holsters, various shoulder holsters, belly bands, etc. Personally, I'm in the camp that says that the only safe and comfortable way to literally carry a gun on your body whilst riding a bicycle is in a fanny pack in front of your body where it is out of the way and very accessible.

I use a grey one, have had it for years, and I had a patch sewn on it to give it some color and to make it look less formidable. Uncle Mike's makes a number of them but for jogging or bike riding I would only recommend a small one that holds a small weapon. Running or biking with a full sized service weapon aboard is just not my idea of a good time. YMMV.

Uncle Mike's makes a couple of styles with adjustable belts and at least one that has a metal clip like your typical IWB holster but it is outside the waistband. That one is pretty small but very useful as long as you don't try to cram too much into it.

I ride a rode bike pretty regularly in NW Oregon, SW Washington. My biggest concerns are the occasional pack of feral dogs. Now that the laws
in OR and WA have changed I don't have to worry about the local recreational pharmaceutical farmers.
My usual attire is a pair of regular shorts on top of bike shorts and a vest / windbreaker (zip off sleeves for summer) and carry a camelback for water. This allows me to wear my regular belt and holster w/ M66.
The vest or jacket is long enough to cover the bottom of the holster and the camelback breaks up any outline of the revolver.
I do practice drawing from concealed and I like the K frame enough to practice regularly. Admittedly this is my personal preference but it works for me.
I suggest experimenting and see what works for you. Just have fun and be safe

That's the best solution I've found too. OWB works but tends to print a lot even with a cover garment.

Back when I was riding I used to use a Blackhawk Sahara Strider. Unfortunately they stopped making them but it was a chest rig that allowed you to conceal a handgun (a bit cumbersome to draw from) and other gear that you may need. I used to carry a Glock 26 in mine but it would fit probably up to a 19 or 17.

When I stopped riding because I got lazy and was told I had to stay out of the sun so much I gave it to a friend. Not sure if he still has it but I will ask and let you know if he is not using it and you could check it out.

In the alternative you might take a look at the 2A holsters website. They have some chest rigs that I have seen in action and they seem to work pretty well. A guy I know uses one to carry a full size handgun when he runs.

340PD in a fanny pack designed for gun carry with one speed loader in a zipper pocket worn on my right hip at about 4:00. These rigs can be worn on the front, side, or back depending on your comfort level. Mine has a rip cord in front for quick entry. Takes practice to operate with one hand.

Thanks to all I have some good leads to check out. Though I have a 2.5" M66 which I love, I think I'll stick with a 5-shot snubbie. I bicycle in warm country that makes it harder to wear enough clothing to do much cover. Getting just the right belly/fanny pack looks like the best option.

You might check victory Holsters .. they make a belly band type holster but with a shoulder strap that makes it into a shoulder holster .. Friend uses one while riding his motorcycle to would work on a bicycle also ..

I keep it simple and bike in regular shorts and a T-shirt, with my gun owb at 4:00. The shirt covers my shield 9 or bodyguard 380 without printing. No need for an elaborate solution.

Did 10 miles today.

When in mountain lion country I carry a 4" 629 in a fanny pack and have pepper spray at the ready.

Yeah, I rarely use a fanny pack holster otherwise. On a bike it's a natural.

When I ride, which has not been lately I open carry. You really only have one hand to get your gun when moving. Except for Denver I believe OC is legal in Co. I also carry pepper spray, and a air horn, the air horn is probably the most important for critter defense. It may startle the dog, or bear long enough to get your gun.

Shirt weather (which it is in AZ most of the time) - Kahr P380, in a Recluse OS holster, in the middle pocket on the back of the bike shirt. Not much sag with a pistol that light.

Jacket or cover garment weather - Still use the same combo except in jacket pocket. Don't want anything around the waist when I am biking.

I use a fanny pack also. About the only time I do. Also allows me to carry my ID and cell phone as well as a little cash. Never know what might come up. The other thing is that using a fanny pack while riding a bicycle doesn't look out of the ordinary.

I cycle regularly. I use a fanny pack, a PT one, or put it in the handlebar bag. It is good to be old and not give a x"*#@ what people think of my fanny packs

When I ride I carry in a top tube bag with a kydex trigger guard holster. Cord of the trigger guard holster is looped around the steering stem.

I have been riding bicycles for over 45 years. I have been carrying a weapon while riding for nearly 30 of those years. I believe a fanny pack, for me, is the best option. Easy access. Accepted as a piece of cycling clothing and inexpensive. I also have used a handlebar bag, back pack, top tube bag. I am an old man who does not really care anymore what anyone thinks of my fanny.

Back when I rode, I carried mine in an under the seat pack. Not quick to get to, but at least I had it. A friend of mine carried a j frame openly in a holster strapped to his handlebars. He wanted quick access for a vicious dog or two legged varmint.

You guys recommending OWB belt holsters, pocket holsters, and cargo pants aren't very familiar with what bicyclists typically wear. They are usually wearing mid-thigh or full-length tight-fitting spandex pants with no belt along with close-fitting shirts. The tight fit is supposed to lessen wind resistance and make riding fast easier.


What works best for me is a fanny pack; however, the gun is not quickly accessible that way.

Many of us old fart bicyclists, don't care about or for the spandex lifestyle!

In biking weather I usually carry my J-frame in my front right pocket. It is slow to draw, but then that encourages me to peddle faster!

In the late 90's friend of mine had a dog "sicked" on him while in his own garage. The Large half German Shepard caught the first of 5, 45 acp hollow points as it entered the garage, it slid to a stop at my friends feet, who had already inserted a fresh mag to deal with the dog's owner. When the cops from 2 jurisdictions arrived (that street was the border) they were not surprised that someone carried a 1911 around their house, they were surprised, that he carried 2 spare mags! He never fired at the sub-human owner, but would have at the same point were he engaged the dog. As the bad human was mouthing off from the back of a cruiser, the police threatened to just let him out and drive away, That shut him up!

The lesson is, I won't be getting in a gun fight with 2 or 4 legs from the back of a bike !

When I used to ride bike to work in Colorado Springs a wore a Remington blaze orange hunting shirt (didn't work) and I carried an M&P Shield in the chest pocket. That worked.

Folks still acted like I was invisible

That's what SERIOUS bikers wear.

The tight fit is supposed to lessen wind resistance and make riding fast easier.

Some of us have no intention of either being serious or going particularly fast on a bicycle. I ride my bike for casual exercise if I ride it at all. Any T shirt will do and loose fitting shorts as well. Spandex is for skinny people going at high speed - neither of those terms will ever be used with my name attached.

Thus, a simple fanny pack belted around my waist that holds my keys, my identification, my phone (this was not a consideration when I bought the fanny pack but times have changed), AND MY GUN, fills the bill. I do have to note that the fanny pack I use was designed for this purpose and the gun sits in an interior "holster" (velcro bands that adjust) in the last "pocket" and there is a cord that protrudes from that pocket. IF I pull the cord the zippers go in opposite directions and VOILA! A very accessible handgun appears. (As discussed above.)

If you can get one like that you will be well served.


What works best for me is a fanny pack; however, the gun is not quickly accessible that way.

I was attacked by a large dog last year on my bike. I open carry, and still could not get to my gun. I ended up in a ditch battered, and bruised, but not mauled. A man driving white pickup did his best to try and hit the dog, he ran off after that.

Ambulance was called to check my heart, they called my wife, and she took my bike away from me. Bad part is animal control will not do anything unless you actual suffer bite/s.

Moral of the story, if you plan on biking with any speed forget defending yourself with a gun. I now walk in a park that does not allow dogs off a leash. Unfortunately they do not allow biking.

I have a waist pack designed for small pistols or revolvers. It fits either a J frame or my Bersa Thunder 380CC. I keep my LTC and AAA card in another section.

I use mountain bike shorts and "club shirts" even almost all of my riding is on my Cannondale Synapse 105. My regular route is 15.25 miles.

I use a handle bar bag with a holster I attached with velcro I just leave the bag unzipped just enough to access my LC9S. So far it has worked fine. Also the holster holds a spare mag as well..

One of the guys in my Old Fart Gang (must be 60 to enter) rides a 3 wheel recumbent. I said we should mount the M-60 on there! (BTW he is 64 bout 80 pounds over weight and wears spandex biking shorts & jersey, not a pretty sight!)

While I have no solution for your carry, what popped into my head when I visualized the circumstance is the apparent similarity between bicycling and working from horseback. Might solutions for horsemen work for you?

I can just see me using a Dragoon! Most traditional solutions for the horse crowd are too heavy for cycling. Even at a canter, I could draw easier on horseback!

But looking to other areas of expertise is a good idea. When Aircraft are being chased, they launch flares. I need an auto launcher for pork chops!
