Pocket holster: Blackhawk size 3 (for my S&W M&P 340 w/Hogue Bantams): $15.35
This is the first thread to convince me to try a pocket holster. Blackhawk was the only offering in the lgs.
Presentation is the first issue I noticed (not as quick and smooth as my 640 Pro in a Lobo Enhanced Pancake at 4 o'clock, but I'm practiced with that).
The pocket carry is easier to conceal so I'll give it a try for some weeks, and if I decide I can get quick and smooth enough at it I'll give the Galco horsehide a go -- it appears to be a bit thinner than this synthetic rig. Driving or simply sitting is a blinder to my mind's eye, but we'll see 'cause I usually only feel a need to be quick on the draw when I'm walking in the woods (a daily occurrence).

Pocket carry perfection...
I pocket carry a 340PD every day all day..One little tip, use a pair of side cutters and snip off the copper rivets on the corners of the front jean pocket that you carry in, it makes a big difference on the draw. Desantis #02 pocket holster and a set of Hogue Bantams seems to be the best balance of conceal and control for me. In the EDC pocket dump pic: a Benchmade 531 a speed strip a wallet with a Surefire Titan clipped to the side all carried in left front pocket just as laid out,and the 340PD rides strong side front pocket.

I carry my 642-1 as a primary within walking distance of my home (if I am not already carrying one of my semi-autos).
I carry in either a Mika pocket holster, Uncle Mike's #3, Aholster pocket holster (kydex), or a kydex AIWB from Dark Star Gear.
Normally it's in the pocket since it's generally carried in warm weather attire and it's more comfortable.

I use a Desantis Nemesis about 90% of the time and a uncle mike's the rest of the time. its pretty comfortable and no one seems to take any notice. I typically wear dress pants or jeans during the week and cargo shorts on the weekend, fits in all of them.
I have couple of iwb holsters but I just never got comfortable carrying iwb.

I like the Alabama Holster Company pocket holsters as well. Depending on the pistol or revolver, and pocket.

Usually a J-Frame steel .38 in a Mika holster. If I were going to carry anything on my belt on a holster, it would have more rounds than a 5-shooter. Probably a Glock model 27 .40.
I DO like the 642 though. Might get one of those for the weight reduction over my 649.
Only reason I use a pocket holster is because the front sight tends to wear holes in my pockets. I don't care about "printing".

That Galco holster looks really well made and comfortable to wear. I'm assuming the inside is smooth and the outside is suede leather? I like those Altamont grips too. All of my "J" frame wear some style of Altamont's on them. I find their "Combat" grips carry just as easy as the original S&W "Magnas" carry. The pocket "J" frame is the perfect tool for the right occasion!

POCKET CARRY
An ultralight got pocket carried way more than the SS 640, it's a bit too heavy for my tastes. BUT I still own the 640 & can still pocket carry it on occasion if I choose to. NO COMPARRISON between the 2 shooting wise, YMMV.

When I pocket carry I use a Mika's holster. If cooler weather I use a undertech tank top shirt. I really prefer this type of carry.
A word of caution. These are a compression fit shirt. If you like breathing order "TWO" sizes bigger .

I carry amy 642 or 638 in either a Galco pocket holster or an Uncle Mikes when I pocket carry. I prefer OWB when ever I can but most of the summer its short and T-shirts so its pocket carry.

I'm a size 36 and don't wear baggy clothes, but I have carried a 340PD for many years in my front pocket in a pocket holster. Now that I'm retired I wear jeans in the winter and shorts in the summer and don't have any problem carrying the Jframe when I'm not carrying one of my 1911s. The only issue I have is when I wear Wrangler 20X jeans which, have very short pockets, and dress slacks can be a challenge with some holsters unless they are very thin. From no holster to thin holster there always seems to be a place for a Jframe in a pocket. Yes, Jframes take a lot of practice to be proficient, but I just can't bring myself to carry a .380 which is a very questionable caliber. Small 9mm pistols are easier to shoot, but always seem just a tad too big for pocket carry, and not as reliable under extreme stress situations. Given the choice, I'll always opt for my 1911 45 compact or full size, but when the temperature here in Texas reaches 95 to 100 degrees, you will find me with shorts and my 340 PD in my front pocket with a speed strip in my rear pocket. Cool, comfortable, and fairly well protected with the element of surprise on my side.

My Cargo Shorts are Wangler Originals. My Jeans are Wrangler Of some sort and Lee. My Cargo Pants say Classic Edition. I don't know who that is. J-Frames fit in all of them easily. None are slim fit. If anything they are relaxed or for old low rider bodies.

In summer weather if I'm wearing shorts I carry in a Mika pocket holster with Uncle Mikes boot grips. At all other times it's on my belt with Barami Hip Grips.

I've usually got this 642 on me. Usually in right front pocket in a Wild Bill's horsehide pocket holster.
Bought the 642 new in 1997 and the pocket holster about a month later.

No. Only in winter. And never in a pocket holster. It fits handily in the pocket of my winter coats and jackets. And a big advantage is that you look normal walking around with your hands in your coat pockets when it's cold outside.

You put a 1#+ gun in the floppy side pocket and your knee will get banged up and the gun will turning every which way. MY cargo shorts also have decently sized front pockets and that is where the gun sits in a DeSantis Nemesis

Occasional pocket carry of a j frame but probably to the surprise of many, rear pocket and for short durations and covered by an untucked shirt. I’ve discovered that front pocket doesn’t present fast enough. Prints and is much too uncomfortable. Just me I suspect.

I agree with this 100%. It's the next best thing to carrying a gun around in your hand. Only thing I have a problem with is jeans. The pockets on those are too tight. I've gotten away from wearing them.

When I carry a J frame, which is more and more often the last couple of years, it is at 3:30 in a Don Hume JTI. For a quick jaunt maybe drop it in the pocket no holster. JMHO pockets, especially jeans pockets are for derringers, Zippo's, slip-joint pocketknives, and change.

Back at the time of the start of this five year old thread ( ) I may have been pocket carrying a J frame. With large enough pockets, a 10-13 shot micro sized 9 mm is just as easy to carry.

Honestly? I gave up on the platform..there are just too many options that are just as easy to conceal and carry, like this Beretta 85.

I pocket carry 95% of the time here in Az,always in cargo shorts and always with a speed loader.I rotate between a 442,36 2in,36 3in,detective special and an old cobra. All except the 3 in 36 ride in desantis nemesis's pocket holsters and the 3 in goes in a generic. All carry very discreetly and all are easy to get to.The 442 is the easiest to carry and the 3 in 36 is the most challenging.

I pocket carry a 642 all day, nearly every day, in a Desantis Nemesis. The only time it's not in my pocket is if I'm doing something where I'm likely to sweat a lot (yard work in Florida summer, for example) in which case it's on my belt in a Fobus. The only other time is if I'm driving a long distance, and am dressed in a way I can conceal it on my belt in a leather OWB holster.

Good to see this old thread still going. I am still carrying at least one of these J-Frames in my pocket daily, no matter what is on my waist.

I did all summer wearing cargo shorts. Now that it’s jeans weather I’m finding it hard to do. My normal Wranglers don’t seem to be conducive for pocket carry. JIT slide is getting more use now.

642 in a sticky holster in right front pocket. In the car I also carry my 3” 36 in a cross draw holster as drawing from the pocket isn’t possible.

Between old age wearing out well used hands, after lotsa chores yesterday/late last night, that included cleaning of tightly sprung Mouse Guns, I had thoughts of carrying the six shot DS.
Even a Bobcat was considered.
Only one J that's a 63-3 and is a grandkid's gift.

With nice loose, big pocket pants from Cabela's pocket carry becomes much easier.
Right front pocket worked just fine for me for many years with a Glock 26 and both two inch and three inch J-frames at various times for various occasions.
In summer, switching to shorts by Cabela's worked fine. You just have to choose the ones with big front pockets.
These days, due to increased threat out there in the world.......I usually carry a Glock 19 IWB cross draw and two mags.
But pocket carry definitely can work and it has many advantages........just not when you're driving.

Not a good idea to mention you carry crossdraw. Every time I've mentioned it I get a slew of guys telling me how dangerous it is. Some of their reasons are just amazing. Silly but amazing.

Well, that crew--if you see them in person--you can't help but notice that most of them have a physical reason for only carrying on their back hip.
Size of belly........so they make up bizarre excuses to cover their real reason.
When I'm out and about I'm usually driving.
Cross draw is handy from the seated position in a car.
Never had any safety issues.
Works for me. Let others deal with their own problems.

I pocket carry daily a 649-2 with Crimson Trace laser grips and use mostly standard 158's and 130's. My holsters vary based on the pants I have on. Suit pants with a vertical slit I use a Mika Round pocket holster, Levis I use Mika square and large pocket pants like cargoes I use a DeSantis Nemisis which has a small pocket attached for a speed strip. This is a very comfortable way for me to carry. I have had the 649-2 since 2015 and before that I had a 36 but I really like the hammer options of the 649 best.

There must be a whole world out there where guys wear nothing but cargo shorts. 🤔

I like 5.11s but they are pricey. Haven't worn shorts in public in forever.

I pocket carry this little pre-model 40 in my jeans.
If wearing Carhartt or other utility pants, I carry a 2" K frame in this pocket holster that Doc Barranti whipped out for me.

Yes. Yes I do.
I prefer the Centennials, my only 49 is an old flat-latch, may try it some. My LCR is a tack-driver out to 10 yards for me, but the factory grips are too wide and sticky for me to access quickly, it is a belt gun for me.

442-1
Sometimes carry 442 in Mika pocket holster or OWB in a VersaCarry.
Most of the time a Sig 365 in pocket holster or IWB or OWB depending on the clothes I have on.

I now carry my 442-2 in an old Tex Shoemaker OWB pancake holster every time I leave the house. I used to use a Don Hume JIT but it wasn’t as secure so I went back to my Shoemaker, which has a strap over the trigger guard to secure it. I recently found and bought a new one off Ebay as a backup. Since I’m retired now I doubt I’ll ever change my setup. If it ain’t broken, don’t fix it...

DeSantis Nemesis is my pocket holster of choice. Used it for my J Frames for many many years and now use one for my Sig P365 often when not using my Kramer OWB Belt Scabbard Horsehide rig.
The DeSantis pocket holster is extremely light weight, sweat proof, comfortable, covers the trigger guard 100%, remains in your pocket when Roscoe is pulled and is very inexpensive! I have never found a better pocket holster!

I have big legs, and usually wear strait legged khaki's 70% of the time. Leisure time I wear Athletic pants, also big pockets and very comfortable. Any jeans I wear are relaxed fit and strait legged... None are a problem, with a J-frame and a DeSantis Nemesis nor do they print giving away I'm carrying... I've worn the same style clothes for a very long time because I've lifted weights and carried a very long time.
