Do You Pocket Carry Your J Frame Daily?
Hey all,
I am curious about those of you that choose to carry a J frame as your primary firearm for protection. Do you carry it a pants or shorts pocket or do you have an IWB or OWB holster that you use for it?
I had told myself a while ago that my next pistol was going to be a J Frame or something that I could carry in a pocket comfortably. I feel like having that capability greatly increases the chances that I'll carry every day. I have also looked at those "STICKY" holsters, which seem to work very well for what they are intended for. Do any of you use this, or a similar brand and model, to carry your J frame or small auto?
Your thoughts please.
Thank you for your time.
Larry

Much prefer a real holster. Pocket carry is not as secure in my experience and can slide around depending on how you sit or lie down. I do pocket carry sometimes though, usually for short trips out.

I always carry the 638 either as a primary or back up. I have used Uncle mikes pocket holster which works well. I also have and use an OWB built by Snubby Fan ( on the forum), excellent, well made holster that conceals well. It is an open top, but will not drop the gun even when held upside down, but is very smooth to draw. Sometimes there is one on the hip and another in the right pocket with a speedloader in the left pocket. Yes I know the numbers, risk of being involved, number of shots, etc, But I am content and comfortable with my choices, even if they are not the choice someone else would make. I have to LIVE with the results. Be Safe,

I pocket carry daily with my 442 in an Uncle Mikes holster. Feels secure to me. I never feel like I have to keep adjusting it, very comfortable. 5 spare rounds on a speed strip in a leather drop pouch on my belt. Occasionally I carry my 640 OWB. I may eventually try one of the horsehide pocket holsters as my Uncle Mike's is beginning to show a lot of wear due to many years of age.

I have carried a 642 in an Uncle Mike's holster in my front pocket for some time now. Great concealment and has never felt anything but secure. It is a great option in my opinion.

Unless I carry something bigger, usually a Charter Arms .44 Bulldog, I carry one of my 2 Bodyguard Airweights in a pocket holster...in my right pocket, and a spare speedloader in my left, along with my keys, my Case one-hand opening-folding knife, etc...every time I wear pants.

As long as I'm wearing shorts (means loose fitting pants) I'm never without my 442 in the front pocket. I rotate between a DeSantis or an Uncle Mikes that I took a razor blade and cut off the plastic clip. I love this method of carry.
Now, I'm a tall fit (skinny) man and I don't think I can pull off this carry method with my denim pants. So, that's when I'll opt for an IWB kydex assuming I have an untucked shirt.

Like some of the other posts, the only time I pocket carry my 642 is in an old Uncle Mikes in cargo shorts. Jeans, chinos, etc., I carry my BG .380 in a Desantis Nemesis

When I carry a m38, it's in a pocket: no pocket holster.
For me, belt rigs defeat the purpose of a j frame.
Pocket holsters add bulk but nothing more in my experience.

Summer -642 in my shorts pocket with an NAA 22Mag. with clip grip as back-up.
Winter - I just sub. a 640 .357Mag in my jacket pocket. The NAA still goes along for the ride.

Being ornery, I pocket carry a Colt Agent .38 special in a Desantis holster. That gives me an extra shot and the Colt has a better action. I wear cargo trousers and I keep a HKS speedloader in a strong side cargo pocket. When I carried a revolver on duty, I reloaded with my strong hand and I see no reason to change.

I suggest a Remora Clip Holster. It's similar to a stickey . Can be worn w or w/o the clip. in a pocket or not. Clip is adjustable for R or L carry IWB.

EDC is my 340PD in a Galco pocket holster, left front pocket, and a speed strip in the small watch pocket. Update: Still carrying the same weapon but switched to a Blue Force pocket holster & gave the Galco to one of my daughters.

Either a 642 or 637 in an uncle mikes pocket holster in right front pocket and a spare reload plus all other gadgets (knife, keys, change, etc...) in my left pocket-- 365 days a year.

I carry almost every day in cargo shorts a J frame Smith in a DeSantis pocket holster. Sometimes I will carry my Ruger LC9s pro.

If I am wearing cargo shorts I do carry a 638 in a sticky holster in front pocket, works fine for me. If I'm wearing jeans its usually a sp101 in a galco owb with shirt tail out.

I carry my 642 IWB in a Side Guard Holsters Quick Clip leather holster. I have carried in my pocket using a DeSantis Nemesis, but it was too bulky for my tastes. I've thought about trying one of the kydex pocket holsters for the thinner material, but I prefer IWB carry so the need to try one isn't really there.
FYI, I wear jeans probably 99.9% of the time. The kind of pants/shorts you wear, and what kind of pockets they have, can affect how well pocket carry will work for you, as well as the type of pocket holster used.

642 in the regular front pocket of cargo shorts in a pocket holster. The round shape blends in better with the human body than the blocky shape of a semi

PD 340 eight out of ten times when the weather is warm. Wearing shorts, in the front pocket using a sticky holster.
On days where I just have to wear pants, that means a belt, so I will IWB a SA.

My EDC consists of a Model 638-1 and a Model 38-0. I almost exclusively pocket carry using DeSantis Nemesis holsters. I also carry a fully loaded 8 round speed strip in a small nylon pouch on my belt along with a small folding knife and a good penlight.

Dave

Since retirement: Bobbed hammer M60 went from back up role to primary EDC. Uncle Mike's pocket holster left from pocket. Two speed strips right from pocket. Works literally from swim trunks at the beach (yes I have done it), to summer shorts, to my Lee blue jeans, to my casual business dockers, to the dead of winter clothing.

I equip my 642 and 442 with Barami Hip-Grips. No holster required. Either is carried in my right front Levi's pocket, and simply disappears when my shirttail is used as cover. No problem sitting down, and the gun is accessible quickly.

I pocket carried a M642 for a very long time. I am not a big J-frame fan, per se, because I think they're awful to shoot, but for concealment they are fabulous. I switched up to a snubby K frame awhile back; they're not all that hard to conceal on a belt if you dress right, they are easier to shoot and far more accurate. Presently, due to what I have been wearing in terms of light clothing this summer, I currently carry a CS-9 IWB.
However, that said, I have carried that M642 a number of times this summer when I was dressed really lightly and needed to carry a gun in my pocket. J frames are just ever so wonderful for that purpose......

I carry a M642 every day, if not in the pocket then in a inside the waistband holster. It depends on the pants/shorts I'm wearing at the time. Like many I have a box/drawer full of holsters. It seems like I tried them all, always looking for something better.
My two must-have favorites are these:
Pocket holster by Karla Van Horne at Purdy Gear
Stakeout by Ritchie Leather
(Tip - Craig at Lightning Arms Sports has these in stock. Custom leather without the wait. )

I have been known a time or two to carry a NY reload... One "J" frame in my right front pocket and one in a Bianchi OWB holster. But I usually just pocket carry in a Desantis Nemesis strong side with Buffalo Bore's 158grain standard pressure LSWCHP's.

Some of you guys must have some really big pockets. I just don't know how you do it. I'm a 34 in pants size and carry my J frame in an IWB holster with a belt clip. Unless I was wearing cargo pants and carrying on pant leg pocket the only gun I could ever comfortably carry in my front pocket would be a 22 derringer.

I'm a 32 and it works for me. Designer jeans are about the only no go for the pocket carry. What works for you...works for you. Too many people have grips that are ridiculous in size and then can't pocket the gun. Crimson Trace LG-105. Problem solved. They just aren't good for max .357 loads. The torque is hilarious.

I carry either a 640-1 in a Mika pocket holster or a 637-2 with a bobbed hammer spur in a DeSantis Superfly holster in the front pocket of my cargo shorts or pants. If I wear jeans,(mostly in cooler weather), then the 640 or Model 60 go in a Simply Rugged Pancake owb holster. I usually have either the 640 or 637 or both on me all the time. I'm a believer in the NY reload!

It gets hot down here in S.C. That means lot of sweat so in the summertime I wear shorts and a t-shirt most of the time. A M649 in an UncleMike's pocket holster works nicely with this outfit. So far it seems pretty sweat proof. I carry two speed strips also. One really great thing about pocket carry is you can have a grip on your revolver and no one around you is aware of it. I don't exactly have ninja like reflexes so if a situation looks sketchy....
If I am on the tractor and REALLY getting sweaty I may go to a OWB holster.

Glad you can - I tried when wearing the basketball/fishing type shorts where there is only a drawstring and anything heavier than a LCP wants to make the shorts drop!

I pocket carry my S&W 340 PD in a Galco horsehide pocket holster in my front right jeans pocket every day. I have done so for many years. (Well, I have a couple of other J frames that I sometimes rotate, just for variety).

Anything like this one? It fits perfectly in the Galco holster I use with my 340 PD. You are correct about the extra round.

Another vote for the Galco horsehide
super thin and I don't believe it will ever wear out.

In the summer I prefer a strong side owb belt holster. Or a cross draw shoulder holster depending on what I am wearing. At times both. BUT IN COAT WEATHER one goes into the coat pocket. Wouldn't want to have to unzip or more if it was needed.

I have a 36" waist but have to buy 40's in order to fit my legs because I'm a half assed body builder and have large muscular legs. Even so I have plenty of room in Khaki's, slacks, cargo pants/shorts and even jeans with a Model 36 "J" frame and the DeSantis pocket holster. The DeSantis keeps the pistol in its place and never has it came out of the holster when seated. Now Appendix Carry... that's something I don't know how anyone does; especially seated. Even when my stomach was ironing board flat it dug into me like a deer tic! To those AP carry does work for, rock on. You just have to go with what works for you.

Several folks have recommended the Galco horsehide, that is good advice. I have pocket carried a 649 daily for almost 10 years in one, great holster. Scrimp on lunch not carry gear.
