I'm really stuck here. I currently pocket carry a 640-1 but have moved it to appendix with the weight being sometimes a bit cumbersome. I originally was going to save up for a 340 M&P for pocket carry but picked up a nice 1977 Cobra. Maybe too nice to where I may not want to carry it with summer months being hot and with the hammer being "in the white" possibly seeing some rust. It has all the cool factor and the extra round but the 340 gains points with a big dot night sight and a centennial frame. With my thumb on the hammer and a Mika holster I think I can draw just as fast as an internal hammer gun. Where would you go?

I'm a S&W fan. I don't know why I've had them all. The 442 is my favorite but, I never met a J-Frame that I didn't like. Except the ones with a lock hole.

I'd go with the 340. Fit it with Crimson Trace LG-105 and call it good. I can lose a 340 to the cops with no tears. My 360 is set up for pocket and it's wearing in nicely. Pocket carry beats up a gun from my perspective. Especially since scandium is such a soft material.

I recently picked up a 340PD for EDC. It replaced my 340M&P and my Colt Cobra w/a bobbed hammer. Hip & back problems have made carry weight a priority. As to your choices; which is the most comfortable (easy to carry all day) and which one do you shoot the best?

I'll cast my vote in the 340 pile..just the perfect pocket rocket if your looking for lightweight..I pocket carry one every day...all day, and there is not any other firearm on this earth that I'd trade for the 340PD that I depend on daily.

I like the Cobra but it depends what ammo you plan on using. None of the old Cobras were rated for +P ammunition, if I had one I'd load it with wadcutters.

If it's going to be pocket carry only you might want to bob or dehorn the hammer.

Edit: On second thought, go with the 340 -- if you're already carrying one J-frame I think it would be beneficial to keep speedloader compatibility and the same trigger. The Colt action tends to stack more than a J-frame. Also the cylinders rotate in the opposite direction - if you have to load two rounds quickly, do you want to stop and think which side you want to put them on?

I would be reluctant to pocket carry a pristine vintage revolver.

My old Cobra is pitted on the steel and white on the aluminum. I still carry my 49 no dash. Why, less bulk and I hit as well or better with the Smith. The Cobra make a good BUG on my ankle in cool weather. If 5 shots didn't get me out of a jam, 6 will only make it worse!

I like Colts. One of my carry guns is a Detective Special, second series. But if your looking for light weight and pocket carry I would pick the M&P 340. I have one and for pocket carry it's the better choice. No external hammer, better sights, easier to get it serviced if needed(as far as the manufacturer). The colt has the six shot and a big cool factor but if it has to be one...

Well, depending on your budget, you already have the Cobra.....jus' sayin'.....if dollars are a factor then there is no decision to be made.

OTOH, if dollars are not a factor, I don't see much difference. I have an old Colt Cobra that I carry in a fanny pack when I bike ride (I used to jog with it but my knees said cut that out). I could easily pocket carry it and would except I have a M642 for that so it is unnecessary for me to go get the Cobra. Its trigger is different from my S&W guns but not really relevant if I have to defend myself with it (and I really don't care which way the cylinder rotates - a reload is extremely unlikely and I don't carry speed loaders with me as a rule except for K frames, my preferred revolver of choice). It will do the job I hired it to do, I load it with .38 Special Silvertips (+P? really? to what end?), done and done. I wouldn't go looking for a J frame if I already had the Cobra.

I can pocket carry a snubbie K frame, too, so I know the Cobra would be easy and the only reason I don't sell it is sentimental - it was given to me by a friend. To me it's just another self defense piece of no particular importance except the sentiment.

If S&W made 2" K frames I would tell you to forego any J frame or lightweight Colt and get a S&W snubbie K. Personal choice for me is all....

Have you never heard of the 2" snubby M-10 and M-64?

I'd go with the 340. My 340 has worked out well for me over the last two years. Also the 340 can be easily replaced, while the Cobra can't be.
