Full circle, I got me a 10-8 3" and will start carrying it again (to include plain clothes duty carry)

While I am going to buy 2 sets of Tuff Products 7 rounds strips (only carry 6...have large hands and want a good grip)

and plan to carry 158 LSWCHP +P and Gold Dot (SB).....I would also like to belt carry one speedloader by my revolver.

I have a **** load of HKS loaders but want to try a Safariland Comp II.

QUESTION
is there a favorite or go to belt single speedload carrier (either leather or kydex) that will hold either a HKS or Comp II?

the holder will need to be durable as I am rough on my stuff being 6"03" 280lbs.

My thinking, while I will have reloads in my pocket with strips, I would want quick outside belt access to a single speedloader first.

Don't have any immediate suggestions for belt carriers (off-duty, right?), but I'd lean toward either the enclosed all-leather type, to protect them (old habit from service revolver days), or, maybe a leather type that encases the loader that's slipped over the top edge of your belt.

I still carry my speedloaders in either pockets or a camera case (for a J-frame, when riding), but typically still use speedstrips. Not fast, but streamlined for lower risk endeavors and activities.

A couple of excellent K-frames with which to rebuild the herd, too.

It is my intention to get one or two when I take possession of my 686+. Safariland also marketed a similar clip holster for handgun magazines, I have 4, two for my 1911s and two for my 439. I have used the magazine belt clips in PPC matches and in IDPA matches, and I am comfortable using them for CC.

I don't do speedloaders, but I do have one of the leather "pouches" that snaps around the belt to enclose the speedloader and 3 rounds go behind the belt, 3 in front. I like that set up, it's quick to use. But I have the opposite problem as you. I'm a smaller guy and bulges quite a bit on my belt. I stick to strips.

The best belt speedloader pouch I've tried is the JOX pouch. It's kydex and holds my speedloader securely but releases quickly. It actually holds the speedloader above the beltline, so it helps reduce the profile.

I've used the split-six carriers by Safariland and Simply Rugged, but I don't particularly care for them. The quality is good, but I wear my speedloaders behind my left hip and there have been times when getting into my car caused the flap to unsnap and drop my loader. Fortunately, it only dropped inside my car. In fact, that's when I started looking for alternatives and found the JOX pouch. While I've never had it happen to me, I have heard of a few occasions when carrying a Comp I/II-style loader in a split-six carrier released rounds because the release button rides on top of the belt; enough downward pressure could cause the loader to release rounds.

Simply Rugged leather makes some really nice speed loader pouches. From simple dyed leather to holster matching hides . They do a great job and they have a pretty fast turn around time. After my first holster from them, I don't even shop around anymore.

I like both the JOX and Simply Rugged holders. The metals probably not work with me. Being a big guy, I have destroyed the metal 1911 mag holders. Again, I am just rough. what am I doing to bend these things up. Being somewhat of a Mr Fixit.....I am under a vehicle or on the ground and I won't take my gun off. Getting in and out of a vehicle or going through a door way....I will knock into something. Think of a rhino in a fine china shop.

As for a Jframe.....I had a 442 and 640 at one point. I have extremely large hands to the point where I get made fun of a lot. I had a Kahr PM9 and the grip was just too small. on a Jframe, I would have to put the larger grip which affects concealment. I am not able to shoot a Colt Mustang as it will malfunction. Too much hand.

thanks for turning me on to Simply Rugged. I am looking for a holster for my Kframe 3" and I like the looks of that Sourdough holster.

I just bought some Tuff Products speed strips and was surprised at how stiff they are, compared to my old Bianchi ones that finally fell apart. I guess they'll work OK, but I'll need some practice. My glove size is XXL, too, and there's a lot of arthritis in my hands, but with the right grips I can shoot the J-frames pretty well. Sometimes they're as big a gun as I can conceal handily, but the K-frames suit me better.

I've always used the "split six" style of holder for carrying a speedloader on my belt. Works pretty well. I also have a 2x2x2 pouch, and I drop a speed strip in the pocket of my coat.

You should definitely get some Comp II speedloaders, I've found they work better than the HKS for me. They're what I've carried for my 19-7, 13-3 and GP-100. I use the Comp I for my J frames and SP-101. I'll be using the Comp II's when I qual with my 64-2 snub next month.

Congrats on the 10-8, 3" K frames are great for plain clothes. I still have my 13-3 3", but stopped carrying it because it would be tough to replace it.

I normally carry a speed strip - if I feel the need to carry a reload. It's not something you'll realistically ever need in an armed citizen self defense shoot, but sometimes more rounds make you feel better...

If I carry a speed loader, I carry it in one the slip over holders from Wild Bills Concealment. They allow you to slip either 2 or 3 rounds over your belt, which reduces the profile and makes them less noticeable. They've proven to be comfortable and secure in use.

I have them in 5 round J frame, 6 round K frame and 7 round L frame sizes for my HKS speed loaders with .38s and .357s.

Since you're in the K frame why not take advantage of the Comp 2 or 3 even? that handle makes a big difference in hurry.

Carry as many reloads as you want to. The people telling you what to do aren't going to be there to back your play. I've carried as many as seven at times.

I have Comp IIIs and will buy some Comp IIs to try. I have a big pile of HKS for K frame.

When I carried a revolver on the streets in the late 80s early 90s.....I carried 12 rounds in LOOPS (yup loops....Admin would not allow speed loaders)

They would say you would be in trouble if you were caught with speed loaders. I packed two extra speed strips in my pockets and around 1992 I would pack a speed loader in my pocket.

In 1993 they finally allowed speed loaders and when I got my pouch (maybe a week later).....I was issued a Glock.

I bought my 686 for $129 in 1993.

Speed loaders were around as early as the '70s if I recall correctly but we were not allowed to carry them either. I stuck one in my pocket as a working detective and it saved me in a 1974 gun fight.

I really like the JOX speedloader style of carrier. They are the most comfortable and easily accessible way for me to actually carry a speedloader on my belt. When I carry one or two, I carry them on my right side in front of my holster since I load them with my right hand while holding the revolver in my left. My cover garment does a good job of hiding them and these loaders produce a far smaller lump on my waist than traditional pouches/carriers. The fellow who makes them was a very knowledgeable and good communicator when I contacted him with questions.

I will say this ... I came to know about these carriers long after I wore uniforms and might have to be rolling around on the ground or in a wrassling match! I don't know how secure the speedloaders can be in these carriers under those circumstances. I did make certain that the maker knew I wore a double thickness gun belt with my jeans and he made certain that the carriers would fit on that thicker belt.

I have no experience with the Simply Rugged carriers. I use the HKS speedloaders cause I have a pile of them and am very familiar with their use. I loaded from a 12 loop loader all the years I carried a revolver because our uniform called specifically for that method for uniform wear. NO exceptions. However, I did carry an HKS loader or two in coat or vest pockets during cool or cold weather, and I carried one or two close at hand in my howl car. They sure beat carrying extra ammo in a box! I also carried strip loaders in my shirt pocket when not wearing a jacket.

Hope this info is of some value. These days I also carry a Shield for EDC, but when I carry a revolver, I also carry a JOX HKS speedloader carrier.

After using Safariland speed loaders, I never understood why so many people use the HKS brand.

They are almost always the only ones you hear anyone mention, or see in photos in shooting magazines.

Uniformity and Administration not willing to be flexible to those who wanted to move with the times.

we all had 686 4" with Bianchi Cyclone holster, target wood grips and 12 loops.

The lieutenant (also the armorer) was allowed a Bianchi Judge holster, and his gun was a Smython 4" with rubber grips.

I had been using HKS since the early 80s. They are very simple design and can be just as quick at a Safariland if someone trains exclusively with them.

Its funny....when I shoot competition with my revolver....I use my HKS to load for a stage and use my Safarilands during the stage.

I bought a couple of Lobo speed loader pouches years ago with my Enhanced pancake..... they are at least 10 years old and going strong.

I'm not up on speed loader carriers. But I too prefer the Safarilands to the HKS loaders.

One item I discovered when running my agency's training program is that semi-wadcutter rounds do not load as smoothly from a speed loader than either round nose or jacketed hollow points. You'll have to try for yourself. When carrying my Model 65-3", I'll have semi-wadcutters in the gun but JHCs for a reload.

I do the same. I was carrying SWC as my carry load but have switched to Gold Dots exclusively now.

When I shoot department quals I use my SWC reloads. But on the stages I have to do an empty gun or "tactical reload" as they call it, I have RN bullets loaded in my speed strip or speedloader to facilitate the reloading.

Safariland speedloaders Comp I's or II's with their "Split Six" carrier.....

I've been carrying this Model 12-2 in preference to my 3 inch Model 13-3 lately due to the weight difference. The K-frame grip makes it easier to shoot than my Model 642-2. Wish S&W would make another run of scandium K-frames like the 315NG with steel/stainless cylinders, tritium front sights, in 2", 3", and 4" tapered barrels.

Avoidance of dangerous situations is always the best self defense. The prime directive in my day to day activities is to stay out of trouble by keeping a high level of situational awareness.

Sometimes trouble comes to you no matter how much you try to avoid it.

I prefer to have a revolver as first to fight if no other options are available. The reliability factor plays a large role as does shootability. But there are downsides to revolver carry, capacity and reloadability being chief concerns.

My 3" K frame is my preferred self defense weapon, offering six rounds and excellent shootability. The bulk and weight of the K frame six shooter is a consideration and at times the J frame is a better choice.

But any revolver is only useful until it's capacity is exhausted, and that can happen pretty fast with only 5 or 6 rounds available. Once empty the revolver's only asset is as a bludgeon.

In my opinion reloading a revolver in a gunfight is a good way to get shot. My preference is to carry a back-up gun for a NY reload. Most often a single stack semi-auto.

Carrying a gun is a commitment, carrying two is a dedication. It's far faster to switch to a back-up gun, especially if it is already in your weak hand when your revolver runs dry.

I carry a J-Frame in my pocket. A second Is in the waist for a NY Reload. HKS Speed Loaders are in my other pocket if needed.

Several instances on record where an LEO was killed while attempting to reload a revolver.
I normally carry a revolver backup when a semi is my main battery.

I respectfully submit that if you are loading an Hks speedloader anywhere near as fast as a comp 1,2, or 3...you're using the Safariland products in a suboptimal manner.

I too have days when the stone reliability and shootability of a wheelgun are very tempting. Situational awareness and a low profile are tools in the toolbox!
