Default Why one SHOULD carry a round in the chamber!

Earlier today, there was an armed robbery at the service plaza on the Atlantic City Expressway, and authorities are not sharing much information about it. This is the story as reported by the Philadelphia affiliate of ABC: http://6abc.com/suspect-crashes-afte...chase/2281122/ . There is more to the story!

It was tweeted by "scan Atlantic City" that a man armed with a machete carjacked a motorist in Philadelphia that was legally carrying, but was unable to ward off his assailant because he didn't have a round chambered. The assailant then DISARMED the motorist and kept the weapon. The man then drove to Atlantic City, and on his return to Philadelphia, stopped for gas at the only service plaza on the expressway. The gas pumps that he went to are no more than 150 YARDS from the Expressway State Police barracks, and he proceded to commit an armed robbery at the gas station. An attendant got the plate number, and the police apparently were on the lookout. It seems that the culprit was involved in a number of high speed chases in NJ and Pa before being apprehended in Pennsylvania after striking a number of cars.

However, it gets better! Apparently, the motorist that was carjacked, was a SEPTA employee, and a good possibility he/she is a transit authority cop. I do not know which arm SEPTA transit cops carry, but I would not be surprised if they carried Glocks. It has not been reported that the carjacked victim was a transit cop, that is me drawing a conclusion based on the facts.

In reflection, had the "victim" been carrying with a round in the chamber, there is a very good chance that:
A. ... the machete carrying carjacker would have met his maker,
B. ... the armed robbery within spitting distance of the state police station would not have occurred,
C. ... a number of high speed chases would not have ensued, and
D. ... a number of vehicles would not have been damaged in the subsequent chase leading to apprehension.

Just a side note, a number of state laws in NJ were broken, but it leads one to wonder if any state firearms charges will be filed, since it was reported last week that an armed carjacker in North Jersey plea bargained away EVERY firearms charge filed in that case. Remember, in New Jersey, gun laws seem to exist only to hinder the law abiding!

Carry a DA revolver. Just pull the trigger a few times. No worry.

It's not like this is even the clearest example of Loaded Chambers Save Lives.

At this point, the tiny minority of people that still insist on carrying that way are only doing it to troll the rest of us, and aren't going to change their minds. This thread cannot end well. Inb4 the lock.

Exactly why I steer clear of no safety striker fired pistols, and striker fired in general. To dangerous to carry chambered and even more dangerous to carry not chambered. Love my hammered DA/SA pistols and revolvers. Old school just works.

If carrying a single action like an Automatic, there should be something in the chamber, A DA revolver you might get by with an empty chamber, The manual with my older Colt state that it should be carried loaded with hammer cocked and safety on... simple, safe and ready...

The majority of my pistols are S&W DA/SA. I always carry them loaded, a round in the chamber, and the safety off. They are as safe as a revolver. In fact I chided a number of deputies for leaving the safety on our 645, and later 4506 carry pistols.

That's just plain FALSE.

An empty chamber is too dangerous to carry, no matter the weapon type. Might as well carry a rock.

This subject's worn down to bare metal. You'll never convince one side of the others argument.

When my agency transitioned to the Glock, sometime in the '80s, we were trained to keep a round chambered. As the commander of our SWAT unit we transitioned to semi autos earlier than the rest of the agency so I'm pretty familiar w/semi autos. In addition I've been involved in more than one shooting as a working cop and can tell you, w/o reservation, that carrying w/an empty chamber will likely get you killed if you need that weapon to defend yourself. I realize this topic has been posted many times BUT, if you don't feel safe carrying w/a round chambered get a revolver. Much simpler manual of arms and great EDC weapon for the average person who does not seek out dangerous places or people.

With the body of evidence against carrying with an empty chamber, only an actual bad "experience" like the person in the OP's story had will convince those that continue to do so.

But first cover the rock with two pieces of bubble wrap. Sure it slows you down if you have to use it, but if you accidentaly drop it on you foot it won't hurt.
