Default Trip with a handgun.

On the road from Oklahoma to South Carolina to see my granddaughter graduate from USMC boot camp 22 years to the day after I retired from the Army. I wouldn't dream of making a road trip like this unarmed. Luckily, my Oklahoma Handgun License is good in Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina, so one of my S&W carry revolvers has accompanied us. I won't be able to take it on base with us and will leave it in the hotel safe in my security lockbox. Then, it will go back on my hip for the drive home.

THIS is why we need nationwide reciprocity.

I hear ya. This summer I took the motor home from Az to Connecticut to see family.(I refuse to fly anymore). So my mod 60 EDC is on my hip through New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, all the way to Ohio. And that is that. No carry in the blue states. I think the salt air does something to their brains, it's the same on the left coast.

Congratulations on your daughter's graduation and, please, extend my thanks to her for her service to our country from a grateful patriot.

I make a similar trip from Ohio to CT several times a year. I have Ohio and CT (non-resident) permits so I'm covered for the majority of my 11-hour trip.

However, I find it greatly distressing that I have to stop at the PA/NY border to disarm and lock both the firearm and ammunition as prescribed by NY law in order to make the 1-hr drive across NY to the CT state line.

I am in favor of and in complete agreement for the need of nationwide reciprocity for legal concealed carry permit holders. When stripped of our 2A rights in places like NY, NJ and MD, we simply become "targets" for the low-lifes who could care less for legalities or for our individual rights and safety.

Rant over.....

Do you really think the anti-gun senators from those same blue states won't booby trap any "national reciprocal act" into have their brand of "reasonable restrictions?" Look at "Obamacaare repeal" for a sense of what "reasonable" means to them!

Look at what happened with the FOPA! First we gave up new Class III registration to get FOPA, and now some blue states have negated it.

Default Check First

If you're entering a military reservation, I don't think you may carry. It'e the same as carrying in federal building. When I visit my VA center, there are prominent signs: no firearms allowed.

And we all know how restricting ownership of guns from law abiding citizens has reduced the crime rate in these and other states with restrictions on firearm ownership....

Hence, my comment about leaving it locked up at the hotel.

What he said, times one-million. Some things it is far better to keep the federal government out of.

Congratulations to your granddaughter and have a safe trip!

First, congrats!

Second, I've done Pa to FL many times before I was old enough to own a handgun and never had a problem. Would do it again. 22hr drive, 2 gas stations and a bathroom break or two and I'm there.

No! Reciprocity sounds good until they decide to use NJ, NY laws (or similar)!

Why? You are GTG all along your trip. Imagine if she was graduating in NYC or NJ and THEY dictated the terms of national reciprocity - which they would - your gun would illegal to take outside your own home.

I couldn't agree more. With all the **** going on in the world, I believe if you have a permit to carry, it should be like a drivers license... Good in all states. Being licensed in Mass, I can legally (I think) only go to Mass, NH, Maine, and Vermont. and thats only cause Maine, Vermont, and NH have constitutional carry laws... Technically I think I am supposed to get a NH concealed carry license too though...

Congrats to the OP on being a deservedly proud grandpa, and his newly minted Marine.

Add us to the "no fly" list. We just got back from a 700+ mile (each way) road trip up to NY to attend a family wedding.

Thankfully, LEOSA allowed us to visit family in NY and NJ without my having to worry about being disarmed but I commiserate with my brethren here who may not be so fortunate.

As for the airlines and the hoops / expense involved, (with or without the additional issues involved with checking a firearm), well...they can pound sand. I'm not flying unless there's just no way around it.

Congratulations on being proud Marine grandparents. When she graduates they will put an Eagle, Globe, and Anchor pin in her hand. That is the moment of transformation when the recruit becomes a Marine. Tell her this old MasreGuns wishes her the best of experiences and says Semper Fi.

First, congrats on your granddaughter being awarded her Globe & Anchor. That's a laudable accomplishment and you have a lot to be proud of. As to travel I no longer fly for a whole host of reasons but going anywhere unarmed is not something I want to do. I'm covered by LEOSA so car travel is my mode of choice even if it takes twice as long to get there.

Default Trip with a handgun.

Well, we made it there and back without incident. As you drive onto MCRD Parris Island, there is a sign indicating that carrying guns is a Federal crime. I didn't break the law, although my daughter (in their car behind us) complained that I just got saluted and waved through because I showed my DD FORM 2 (RETIRED) while they had to show drivers licenses, registration, and proof of insurance. Trip with a handgun. My brother and I secured our carry guns in the hotel when going on base and carried everywhere else without drama.

The one thing I will change the next time we do something like this is to take a second (or third) gun. At one stop on the way home my wife had me leave my carry gun with her while I made a late run to the store. Her gun will now travel with us.

+1 on the second (or third) gun. My traveling iron is usually my off duty Glock 27 and a 442 in my pocket.
The bride can operate the 442 in an emergency well enough with her weakened hands.
When I retire, I foresee revolvers being my LEOSA traveling companions. No senseless magazine restrictions to deal with in Communist states.
