Default How many have dumped their new mini semiautos to go back to J-frames?

All this talk about "pocket rockets," Shields, single stack Glocks, tiny SiG 938s and 238s "replacing" J-frames (as if that could happen) got me to wondering. How many people who were seduced by little semiautos have switched back to J-frames? If so, what seduced you, and what brought you back?

Just recently purchased a 638. I find I am carrying it way more than my 40c. However they are both in the duty rotation. No shield here. I felt the 40c fit my hands way better.

CC for me always revolved around comfort first. Body shape and clothing styles pretty well defined that for me. As I've aged, suspenders are now my friend.

Years ago I was belt carrying a 3" 1911 45ACP, then moved to a SIG 938 9mm IWB. Moved to pocket carry a few years ago with a 642 38Spl and now usually can be found with a 640 .357 in one pocket and an NAA 22Mag(clip grip) in the other.

A J-frame in a Mika holster and I hardly notice it my pocket, plus pretty sure it will work if called on. Summer time with shorts and a T it's all I've carried. Never even thought about trying to pocket an auto.

I was seduced by the comfort and convenience of the little .380 pistols but never felt comepetely comfortable w/it. My M&P .380 started to have light strike problems and while the LCP was reliable, I gave it to my son in law so he could protect my daughter & grandkids. My EDC is the 340PD which is all I need as a retiree whose daily travels are pretty tame.

Well for normal carry I used a Bodyguard.380. I have since replaced it with a J frame size .38 revolver. It is not a Smith, it is a very capable Ruger LCR.

I never cared for pocket Autos. I carry a 442 in my pocket always. I pick another of these for IWB.

I've always been an auto loader kind of a guy. Tried several of the "single stack 9's". I generally prefer an auto because of the capacity increase over a revolver and the ease with which you can reload them.

Now, that being said, I've recently switched back to carrying a j-frame. While carrying things like the Kahr CM9, Shield, or Glock 43 is certainly doable, for me nothing carries as comfortably as a light weight j-frame. Doesn't matter if it's OWB, IWB, appendix, or pocket carry the small revolvers just hide better and are so much more comfortable.

Your mileage may vary.

Tried a Keltec P11 and a PF 9 for pocket carry. I had function problems with both. They were minimal, but enough that they were ruled out as EDC.

I went back to my old reliable nickel model 36 and my model 60 for pocket carry and my 2.75" model 69 for belt carry. I just like revolvers and feel more comfortable with them. That's reason enough for me!

Capacity has never beeen an issue for me, I subscribe to the theory that if I need more than 5 rounds I am someplace where I should not be to start with.

I never had a "mini" semi-auto, but I did have compact autos. They were the smallest I would go, and with 9mm being the smallest caliber.

However, I was initially seduced by the D frame, which isn't a S&W. Ever since that, J frames just don't have the sex appeal to sway me.

Still, it got me away from semi-autos and branded me a revolver guy first and foremost. Although, I still keep an auto or two around for when hi-cap is needed.

As with anything regarding online discussion, everyone is different and has different tastes. Whatever works for YOU is what's important.

Sex appeal doesn't factor in for me when I'm choosing a carry piece.

Ok. Well maybe just a little.

My J-frames have mainly been a backup gun for me. With my fairly recent Glock 43, I did prefer the "G43" for a backup on my body-armor in my cop-career (but now retired).
My J-frames, either an S&W 642 or 640 Pro, were still used as the 642 carried better on my ankle (if I decided to carry that way that day) and even right now as I type, I'm wearing my 640 Pro in a new AIWB style holster I received minutes ago.
Yesterday, I wore a Glock 19Gen4 around all day, but today, I'm out running errands and decided to take a chance and just carry a 5-round gun with one reload.
Do dress and outfit oneself as best as one can for whatever perceived, possible threat situation anticipated.

My G43 augmented my carry options and I never completely left J-frame carry.

I used a Beretta 950 BS for years. Switched to a M642 for years. But now I prefer 2" K frames or a CS-9 on my belt. But the J frame does see constant use due to back issues and the simplicity it affords at certain times; just drop it in the pocket, etc. Always use a soft pocket holster. Easy. Just not my favorite.

I am very happy with my RM380 compared to a J frame revolver. Both are small guns. My semi is 380and holds 6+1. I can reload it in the dark in a few seconds with my eyes closed. It is doa so like a J frame I can double strike a misfire. Reviews indicated and my experience confirms b my RM 380 cycles any ammo you feed it so reliability is not an issue. Finally, I can conceal it much better than any revolver.

I bought a BG380 for times that I need something pocket sized. Unfortunately, it doesn't operate properly and is back at the mothership for the second time after they sent it back without resolving any of the issues.

If it isn't 100% reliable after this trip, it goes away to be replaced by a 442.

no mater what I try from pocket 380s to single stack wonder nines, I always go back to the snub... even more so since I let Nelson Ford work my jframe.

The charter comes out for colder weather and such

but but the j frame is on my more than anything these days. I keep going back to it.

But I do like diversity

I will take the snubs every day of the week over any EDC gun

I am under 50 as well... so grew up in the Beretta 92, Glock 17 heyday

My carry options have most always been dictated by circumstances as I see them. When working, I carried a full size 1911 Government Model or a Commander with a J-Frame back-up at times. Upon retirement I went to a SIG 1911 Ultra Compact, then my 3913. Eventually I switched to a LCP. Very compact and light. But, I just could never feel the love, and I hated shooting it I guess due to the recoil and inability to please myseff with practice results. As time went on I gravitated to my old BUG J-Frame I had sitting around, and that's about where I am today. I have purchased a 49 and a 649 in recent years, and the 649 in a Mika pocket holster is my normal EDC. When I am going to a metropolitan area I will put on the 3913 or the SIG. I guess the Govt. Model is retired. The best 'shooter' for me is the SIG, followed by the 3913, then the J-Frame. All of them are suitable for self defense, and I can hit my targets at practice. For me, the 649 meets all of my needs and is not a cumbersome carry.

I carried a 442 for years as my CCW. I now carry a Walther PPS in 9mm. It has been 100% reliable, is MUCH faster to reload, carries smaller, and is more controllable than the 442 so is more effective past 5 yards. Match it with a Black Arch hybrid holster and it disappears and is incredibly comfortable to carry. The night sights on it are good and better than the 442 sights by a mile. Pair it with HST 147gr ammunition and its a terrific weapon.

I, too, have an RM380, which I have found to be totally reliable and quite accurate. I used to alternate pocket carrying the RM380 with a 642, but now just carry the 642. I found that I am more accurate with the 642, that the 642 conceals better than the RM380 in the clothes that a man in his late 50s wears, and, most importantly, that the revolver is easier to pocket draw because the cylinder holds the grip way from my leg making it easier to grasp.

I believe that the best gun you can carry is the one that you are most comfortable with and can hit the target with. There is no single solution in such circumstances. Stay safe.

This last month replaced 938 and Kimber Micro 9 with a S&W 640 357 mag and a S&W 60-15 3" 357. The 640 is awesome at 15 yards with my 357 reloads. I carry 38 +P loads in it as my EDC. Still playing around with the 60-15 basically trying to get the accuracy out of it that I get with the 640. Heck with a longer barrel and adjustable rear sight it should b more accurate!
Dang I do love the 640, like a death ray in my hand!

I carry a first-gen LC9 most of the time. Long revolver-like trigger pull but compared to a J-frame 38 I get 2 more rounds with about the same ballistics - in a slightly more concealable package. Works for me.

I still have and still love my J-frames, I just don't carry them as much these days. Of course given their condition, they are getting almost too valuable to carry anymore anyway...

I have several bottom loaders, but tend to my J frame S&W most of the time.
My best is the M640-1....

I NEVER stopped carrying a Smith and Wesson J-frame when the mini-auto fad began, so I have no mini-auto to abandon

I had a Rossi R35102, but even though I liked it, it was just too heavy and large to supplant my M&P 380, or other pocket auto. However I was able to recently trade the Rossi for a Performance Center 642 Talo. This little revolver makes a strong case. I'll probably never renounce the little autos completely, but I'm sure the 642 will find its fair share of pocket time. It's already been carried more than the Rossi ever was.

I carried a Model 66-4 2-1/2" until I could afford a 642. Glock 22 in the winter, 642 in the summer.

Not me. LCP is still my EDC though I've got J-frame alternatives if I choose.

The only j-frame I own is a Taurus M85, and that's my yard gun (which reminds me it needs cleaning).

I don't like anything in my front pockets if I can help it. My knife is clipped to the right front pocket so it's up high, and my car keys get hung half way in the left, so that they don't fall down in.

The rest of the time it's one of these (until the P320 recall is over).

Are those grips made by Hogue?

Many of those are used for teaching. I have an assortment of grips for the various students to try.

I also like to carry two, it is usually the PC 940 Specials in Bell Charter Oak's NY Reload holster on my strong side

Went the other way. Used to be super into carrying six/fiveguns, but my Glock 43 is a superior gun in just about every way. Now that it's getting chillier I'll add a Sig 239 and VP9 to the mix.

I didn't go back to a J frame, but I did end up there.

Years ago I started pocket carrying a Keltec P11 or a PPK. Those were replaced by a SIG P238 around 2011. For the last few years I've been trying out some different mid size autos like a Commander and a Glock 36.

Earlier this year, I broke out the Colt Police Positive Special that I learned on 25 years ago. I was amazed that after more than 10 years since I last shot a revolver, I still shot it better than any of my autos. Then I stumbled onto a 637 PC for a good price and the rest is history. I carry a J frame in my pocket all day, and when I leave the house I add a larger revolver in a OWB holster. Usually it's been a Taurus 617 (7 shot K frame 357 snubbie, I wish S&W made a gun offering the same features in such a small package!), but I also rotate thru a 4" S&W M10, Ruger GP100 WC, and I just got a 4" S&W M29 off this forum that I plan to carry some.

Never was affected by the "either/or" syndrome. Depends the weather and how I'm dressed. Equally comfortable with my Shield 45 or Model 49 J frame. Recently picked up a Colt Detective Special with a 3" barrel. I'll be toting that one too, soon as I find a suitable holster. Prefer carrying revolvers OTB.

I won't say that I have dumped my small semi-auto for my 442 but I have been carrying it while my Glock 43 and Shield are away for an upgrade.

Once back then I have to start the approval process to carry all over again or wait until I retire to carry them.

I don't know that I would ever get away from carrying a J frame.

I love the platform and will always have one (or 10) laying around for use.

I have always been 99.9% J frame. Gave my 642 to my daughter. I have a 36 and now a 640-1 the gets first 2 rounds of the old FBI load 38 +p followed by 3 357 158 grainers.

The rare times I need deep deep deep concealment, I have a P32 auto. I don't think I have carried it in a year....

When bangers are carrying Glocks with 15/17/21 rounds someone with a wheel gun with 5 or 6 rounds seems a bit under power !!

I'll stick to my autos with a few more rounds !!

Default Wil not let go either

Theres a time and place for my j frame and LC9s. I shoot them about equally well. The 9mm holds 2 more weights about 3oz more than the 360, 3 oz less than the 60 (my wifes) Conceals different but about a same. 9mm and 60 a little more for the house. 360 a little more for carry

I carry a 442. Dumped it for a Kel-Tec P3aT. Then came back. Dumped it for an LCP. Then came back. Dumped it for a Shield 9. Kept the Shield but carry the 442 again. Dumped it for an HK P30sk. Came back. There are LOTS of genuinely great carry guns out there, but for me, none beat my j frame(s).

I carry a Glock 26 whenever I can. Since I retired I basically live in cargo shorts and T-shirts 6-7 months of the year, so pocket carry of mu 642 is so much easier. The 26 has become my cold weather gun.
