Why do I carry? I am a probation officer. As such I read the criminal history of my "clients" and their reasons for probation or incarceration. It has taught me one thing: You have NO idea what may be coming toward you on the sidewalk.

Ever consider carrying a can of Wasp spray or pepper spray? Also carry a long, stout walking stick and a bright flashlight. It lessens the chance of shooting someone else. Also doesn't make a lot of noise. This should be reported to the city, pound, and/or police ??? Save you from ending up in court or a lawsuit. They will be warned and cited and a record will exist. You don't want anyone harmed, adults or especially children..

Sorry to be so long getting back. Tip of the hat to MichigganScott
bigggbruce and URIT. They were spot on. John Connor in the
recent issue of American Handgunner. Note on the column said
Connor is taking a sabbatical for an undetermined time. This is a
rerun of a old column. I thought it was excellent and wanted
to share with the forum.

In Canada "we carry" to get the firearm from the trunk of our cars to the firing line of a certified gun club. I wish it was different.

I got my carry permit when I turned 21, but never really carried. I've never really worried about being robbed or anything, and more than likely I would give them the car or wallet (even if I'm carrying). Stuff isn't worth it. However, I started to carry after seeing mass shootings and terrorists attacks.

I carry because after 36 years of carrying I would feel naked without one.

Thank you bigggbruce! The context of the remark is 180 degrees off of how it appears in OPs post and makes perfect sense that way.

As posted by the OP it appears someone is questioning the "carrier" and is marking a snotty remark. When taken in context of the article it is the carrier's response to the questioner and turns everything around.

BTW. Iggy, liked your response very much!

Because I leave the house.

In the past month or so we've had a WalMart shot up, car thieves aprehended by police in that same WalMart parking lot, (bad guy ran, crashed, pulled a gun and was DRT,) and an Adams County Deputy was shot and killed near by last week. The suspect in the Deputy's murder was running and knocking on doors of homes trying to hide.

Some really good reasonable responses. However, I'm afraid if someone actually asks you that you're probably wasting your breath trying to explain it to them. Some folks just plain want others to cover their fannies, probably the same one's that take zero responsibility for their actions.

Simple answer -- I had a wake-up call when somebody in a passing car took a shot at my Geo Tracker with a .22 or pellet gun. It hit the door post 3 inches behind my head. There had been reports of this on the highway, and it just "hit too close to home". I was going 60-65 and even if it had just hit the glass, it could have been calamitous.

"Why do I carry?" is an invasive question. I wouldn't ask a dude why he married a fat, ugly woman. Some questions ought to remain unasked.

I'd probably blow off the question. If one remained persistent, I'd probably reply, "You tend to your business & I'll tend to mine."

Carrying a gun is like having a parachute. If you need one and don't have one, you'll probably never need one again!

Growing up as a descendant of one of the most hated races in this country has taught me to constantly watch my back.
I've learned that an attack can happen at any time and I've learned to meet violence with violence and I've sent more than a few people to the emergency room.
Why do I carry?
Now it's not just me but my wife as well. A white Italian married to an Injun? Just an excuse for more hatred.
Since my degenerative peripheral motor nerve condition started, I can't run, can barely make a fist and can't move like I used to. I can't slam people face first into a brick wall or bounce their head offa fire plug.
But I can still shoot a snubby.....

Default Experience

After taking part in, and observing our society's proceedings, for over eighty six years, I was thankful, several times, that I was "carrying". I never took a trip of any kind, length, or to any place, without a firearm. I would now, feel stupid, not to carry, and that I had learned vary little, from my experience. "Experience is a good teacher", "For Some, For others, Not So Much".

Because it’s a tool to protect myself or family, just like having the fire extinguisher in the kitchen.

I hope never to use either, but it must be on hand and available to be of any use.

I have said this on the forum before but it bears repeating.
My wife once asked me why I was packing up a gun to take on our vacation to Arizona.
My response? "We're going to ARIZONA, honey...not heaven!"

I hope that others, like you, probably without a family, come to realize, that if we are compassionate with some of the underprivileged people, turned criminal, while robing us of material things, and going unpunished, may turn to rape, or kidnapping our family members. Now that is another "Ball of Wax" entirely! Much better not to let it get started, by pitying the underprivileged, or to feel guilty for their status. Help them, but don't excuse their crimes. My two cents.

Now I carry because I'm eighty years old, on a four-wheel walker and oxygen, and would be entirely helpless to defend myself or run if attacked.

But I've carried since packing concealed became legal in Kentucky because I feel safer as things go to hell around me.

...because I was in a situation where I was genuinely fearful for my life once, a long way out in the woods, and had no way of defending myself. I resolved right then and there to never be in that position again and I got my permit and have carried daily since then. That incident was probably twenty years ago.

Yet another four legged violator of my subjective, split second interpretation of the 21 Foot Rule, yesterday. Full speed at me, not just standing there, blatantly displaying menacing posture. I had to yank, but I did not crank, because the threat stopped its charge 15 feet from me, thus avoiding being stopped with a tiny amount of time to go. I was the third person to telephone local law enforcement in two minutes to report this threat. They conveyed their concern about my yanking on average of once every 5.5 months, which for me translates into 1,000 miles in my towns' single family residential neighborhoods. I told them that I am not a factor in how often people allow their guard dogs to roam at large on the street to ambush menace people. If once every 52 years, then I will respond appropriately to the threat once every 52 years. If it is 52 times per year, then I will reasonably respond to the threat 52 times per year.

I'll agree with you to a point, but there's lots of people around the Trail of Tears in these parts that take great pride in claiming to be at least 1/7th Cherokee . . .

1. I can't afford a full time bodyguard.
2. I enjoy the company of Mrs. Smith and her 5 little children.
3. Like Iggy, I'm too stiff and sore to run and too old to fight,
but I can if I have to.

Everyone that can legally carry should, because laws & LEO only deter crime not prevent it. Only the victim can truely prevent the crime committed against them.

Whoever first said:
"I'm too old to run and not smart enough to be scared" nailed it.

This case is new enough to have a lot of information about it on the interweb. Do you have more details, such as a city and county, so we can search for it?

He did the right thing, the name of the game is to stop the threat. But the prosecutor was able to paint a picture to the jury that he used 'excessive force'.

He was found guilty.
When the Judge sentence him he told him I hate to do this but my hands are tied.
He gave him 25 to life. Will he do all of that doubtful, but there is a good chance he will die in prison.

On the very next day the courts allowed the victims family to sue him for everything he owns, so that even if he gets a new trial on appeal and gets out he will no longer have his home.

The issue with many, many people that ccw, they truly have no idea what they are doing. Many states require zero training or even a basic going over of the laws of self defense. If you are shooting an unarmed person that is advancing on you in most states, you are going to jail. Raw fear is never a reason to shoot someone. That is what makes the burden so heavy for all of us that carry, understanding that you have to be 100% correct before pulling the trigger. Furtive gesture aint getting it done.

I have always told people NOT to get in petty arguments. This was not a case of a robber, raper, home invader getting shot. This was two people who knew each other, did not like each other, who got into a heated exchange of words.

He may have been justified, but he was downright ignorant to get into a verbal fist to cuffs. As soon as someone raises their voice to me over the years I have just separated myself from them. Especially work, or family.

ODD, in the states that have constitutional carry I have seen no states that support your claim.

Thanks. It's always hard to make an assessment from a news report, but on the face of it, things look bad for the defendant (notwithstanding the guilty verdict). On a semi unrelated note, this quote could be used in any number of self defense threads . . .

"Kimball told police immediately after the shooting that he fired his gun after Kelley, who was 6-foot-4 and outweighed him by more than 100 pounds, shoved him repeatedly and forced him to retreat 35 feet. Kimball, who had a permit to carry a concealed weapon, then drew his .380-caliber pistol and fired three times.

Kelley was pronounced dead at Maine Medical Center in Portland. The state medical examiner who conducted the autopsy said any of the three shots could have killed Kelley."

Yep. I still get grief from some folks. I always answer their snarky question about my carrying like this: "Do you wear a seat belt?" They always say "yes". I ask - "been in a car accident?" Mostly they say "no". "Well there you go. I've never needed my gun either."

"Why do you need that?"

If you have to ask, you won't understand. Everyone needs to find the answer within themselves, or not. I don't believe any other person can convince or persuade a gun into (or out of) your hand; it's something you must decide for yourself.

I carry because it is my right, guaranteed by the US Constitution, more specifically by the bill of rights.

Thomas Jefferson summed it up best: "A bill of rights is what the people are entitled to against every government on earth, general or particular, and what no just government should refuse, or rest on inference."

The rights enumerated in the first ten amendments are not rights given by the government. The bill of rights does not grant rights. It recognizes rights inherent in our being citizens.

I also carry because it is my responsibility to protect myself and my family because I refuse to abdicate this responsibility to a government and recognize that the government cannot be everywhere at every time. And, this comes from a person who, next month, will have been a continuously sworn law enforcement officer for 40 years.

Yeah, that's a good answer. I myself would take it a step further and say "I don't need a reason why"
