Why do you carry?
"Because you're not qualified to carry one. You haven't got the
skills, the judgment, the sense of responsibility, or the
courage for it." Anyone know who said that?

Suppose you enlighten us. Be sure to include the context in which the remark was made or it means nothing!

I've no idea who said that "first", but I can tell you I first heard it a long, long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.
Going on the premise that the population is divided into three basic personality types, Wolves, Sheep, Sheepdogs, it's a Sheepdog's answer to the "Why do you carry a gun?" question so often asked by sheep.
Do I personally think it's the most appropriate answer to that question that best fits all situations? No, I don't. I'd reserve that answer for only the most condescending, snooty types. Most of the time people are simply politely curious. For those polite types I try to be as invitingly informative and welcoming as I possibly can.
Why do you carry a gun?

Why do I carry a gun? Well, I used to tie a string to the trigger guard and drag it behind me, but I looked ridiculous. Now I just carry it.

As a retired LEO my experiences (surviving three deadly force confrontations in 30 years) are why I continue to carry, and to shoot regurarly and ensure my skills do not deminish w/time.

Why would I not carry? I can think of many reasons to carry and very few to not. Same reason I lock the doors of my car and house, have insurance on my cars and property, have a fire extinguisher, etc.
I pray I'll never need to use my carry gun, but if I do, nothing else will do.

Why do I carry?
Sadly, our society has declined in common sense, respect, decency, morals and many other important things that promote a nice society.
Carrying does not make me feel superior to anyone but it does allow me to not be a statistic along with my skills, experience and attentive personality I will be fine.
Lastly, I take great pride in saying the only time I have used my firearms has been at the range or out in the desert. I will not say I have not been close because I most certainly have however I left home with max capacity and came home with the same..😉🤙

I carry a gun because there is evil in this world. It strikes in churches, McDonalds, the library, at home, and in traffic. It comes in restaurants, parking lots, and movie theaters.
When it comes, you won't have time to wait for the police. It will come suddenly without warning and with unbelievable violence.
I believe it is my job as a man to protect my family and other innocents from this evil.
Generations of Americans have fought and died to protect this country, their families, and friends.
It is my right and my duty to follow in their footsteps if called upon to do so.

i didn't carry much for years because i lived where a shotgun in a pick-up was the norm. even at high school there were guns in cars and trucks. i really got serious about my own self defense when i moved to south fl and drugs, gangs, home invasions, knock out game and home invasions were far more common than the rare run in with a black bear. getting married and having kids only reinforced my dedication to concealed carry.

I too have a reasonability to my God, my family and my country/community
to be ready, able and willing to stand up against evil at every turn.
I do not live or reside in a Utopia.
Therefore I am trained and equipped to do my part.....Are you???

I am with Iggy and Dave. I spent my entire adult life wearing a badge and still do now as a security officer for a high end resort in Colorado. I made it through 36 years as an LE and then got in a gun fight with a crazy last fall in my present job, out in the middle of nowhere at my posh little resort! Go Figure. You just never know when or where it will happen.

I think Iggy and Dave pretty much summed up all of our feelings and I know for a fact that I can't add much to it. Great job, gentlemen.
I will add this, though. People have often said, "It's not the years, it's the miles." Well, let me tell you...I've got both...and many of the miles have been hard miles.
I'm old, I'm sore, and I'm tired. I'm too old to run, too sore to fight, and too tired to mess with some scumbag street thug who is trying to hurt or kill me or my family.
I've carried pretty consistently now for over thirty years and my age, physical aches and pains, and my rotten attitude just solidify my reason to still keep carrying.
There. That's my two cents worth, and it's probably not even worth that.

I look at it like herd immunity. If a sufficient number of our herd (decent human beings) receive a dose (CCW), it will protect the entire herd, including those too old or young (or unable physically or psychologically) to.

I would rather not answer that question. On a good day, the person who asks such a question is stupid, or, if young enough, actually ignorant but not stupid. Usually, however, there is some kind of derangement or delusion involved. It is usually difficult, at least for me, to get into an extended discussion without my opinion of the interrogator becoming clear. Occasionally I choose to let this happen. More often, I avoid having the question asked, or at least don't answer it.
If, for some reason, I feel that an answer is called for, probably the one given in post #27 by hyena is best: "Because when seconds count, the police are only minutes away."

Being a retired cop, I know most of the time they bust a gut, so to speak, to get to the scene. But there are only so many, and might not be so close, and will need to be called, as only SOME criminals are stupid enough to commit crimes in front of an officer.
Using my immunology metaphor, depending on the police to protect you is like only immunizing left handed blonde women with the O negative blood type. Why NOT everyone who is able?

As mentioned above and in post #27 " When seconds count, the police are only minutes away." has been a favorite of mine.
Always especially grateful for the police, be they seconds or minutes away!

Mule Packer sed,
I'm old, I'm sore, and I'm tired. I'm too old to run, too sore to fight, and too tired to mess with some scumbag street thug who is trying to hurt or kill me or my family.
This is source of the old saying, "Don't mess with an old man, He'll just kill you.

Average police response time is 10 to 12 minutes .. in my area of the county it can be much closer to 20 minutes or longer ..
In an emergency are you willing to wait that long to respond to someone trying to harm you ??

Now if someone asks me that question it makes an assumption that I either told them I carry or they might have seen something to make them assume that i carry. I certainly did not tell them, 'cause it ain't any of their damn business anyhow.

So I can defend myself against my neighbors' attack guard dogs, who criminally willfully or criminally negligently allow their dogs to freely charge off their property to ambush menace myself and other pedestrians on the street. The grave threat is real, the range is very short, the fractions of a second are tiny, and the need to defend is immediate.

How many dogs does he/she have? Sounds like they should all be dead by now.

A lot of well written thoughtful answers that I don't know if I can add anything to. I will add this, I've had a couple of times that I thought I was going to have to draw my gun, thank goodness I didn't... and thank goodness I have the right to have one one me.

It's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

“So,” queried Snidely Snotworth III, lookin' down his un-busted but needed-bustin' nose, “Why do you think you have to carry a gun?” “Well,” bellowed the Brutish Neanderthal (that would be me): “Because you're not QUALIFIED to carry one. You haven't got the skills, the judgment, the sense of responsibility, or the courage ...
