Speaking as an "Old Retired Cop", I retired at 52 certainly not old and certainly still fit enough to work School Security. I know quite a few who retired in their early 40's and started second careers. Most old security guards I know, were never cops, they retired from blue collar jobs and went into security as a way to supplement retirement.

This is my first year teaching in a high school (college before that). I would most likely carry my LCPII. Yes, I know it is a .380, but it is small, concealable, and I shoot it well. Conceal-ability is the most important thing to me. If kids know you carry, and the threat is a student, then you lose all element of surprise and would likely be a target.

On a slightly related note, my mother is a teacher in a high school that had a shooting fatality today. Not one of these kids looking for glory and infamy, but apparently a kid was trying to show off his gun. He had a ND and killed a girl, then in a rush to shove the gun back in his pants he shot himself. At least that's the story for right now. This just happened 5 hours ago.

I don't think armed teachers is THE solution, but it may be part of it. The kids have guns. The police have guns but are too far away or are cowards (not all just the guy in Florida. I've also heard that he may have been following training so who knows). Everyone has a gun except the people getting shot at. I don't think having an SRO or officer at schools is an option because if you're going loaded for bare anyway, just shoot him first. It would have to be multiple officers, which could get real pricey in places that complain they can't afford Kleenex. My .02.

News just in: A school in PA has decided to jump in at the Stone Age level: Arming students with buckets of rocks. I have to applaud them, it is a start, better than nothing. Maybe Bronze and Iron ages will quickly arrive, followed in quick succession by the 1873 Age, 1889, 1908 and 1911 ages, and finally, the Tactical Tupperware age.

just for the heck of it here is what i would do first i would shut the door assuming it was Not shut already then lock it and barricade it, tell my students to be quiet pick up my cell phone and call the the police.

Tell them who i was what school i was teaching at the location of my class room, then i would inform them that i was armed and had the necessary permits to carry a gun for self defense.

Then i would wait now if the shooter came into My classroom i would defend myself and my students, i Would NOT going looking for the threat i would stay where i and my students were and wait it out.

When the police arrive i would put the gun away and give a statement to them about what i heard or saw.


Regarding the gun i would carry my police trade-in second generation Glock 17 semi-automatic pistol chambered in 9mm caliber.

School Resource Officers are all that is needed. Real SRO’s like the one who stopped the school shooter after Parkland, not the ROAD (Retired On Active Duty) SRO who was on duty at Parkland. He should be shamed every time he is seen in public.

As long as yours is not the first classroom of the attack. Or you are not outside the classroom. Or your classroom does not have windows the shooter can access. Or you lock some of your students out in the hallway. Or the shooter is waiting until classrooms empty after pulling a fire alarm.

The relatively idyllic active school shooter response you mention is basically SOP everywhere except for the addition of the gun, which likely would not be needed. Your plan would work when:
You have proper notice a shooting is happening.
You and your students are in your classroom.
You have time to execute before the attack reaches you.
You are not supposed to be leaving your safe space.

Most school shootings are timed for maximum effect when students and teachers are out of their classrooms. That’s when the Glock would be most useful. Do you have a plan for that?

BTW, I support arming qualified teachers, and I carry a hi-cap pistol whenever I am in a school. The plan you suggest sounds good until you are in the middle of the reality of battle vs. on the periphery.

Our teachers are fellow Americans, they too have the inalienable right to defend themselves.

Just like the butcher, the baker, the candlestick maker and the rest of us.
