I voted bottom feeder, double stack...but that's generally true once I leave the walking area in and around home. For around home, property, and environs it's more often the case that I'm accompanied by a five shot 642-1 than the semi-auto.

Once I set foot in the 4Runner to head to or out of town, however, then I always carry one or another double stack bottom feeder and a spare mag.

The gun that's actually in your pocket, or on your belt all the time. That's the best choice, be it a KelTec .32 or an Alaskan. Mine is a M640.

I alternate between a 640, Shield 45 and a SIG 938. I never say to myself, how many rounds will I need today? I carry what is comfortable and what I have confidence in. 5 rounds or 8 rounds, makes no difference to me.

I carry four of the six choices during a typical year. Don't really have favorites, just correct tools.

At least 90% of the time I carry a .45 Kimber Custom CDP full-size 1911-style pistol.

Camping and fishing trips usually include a .22 S&W Kit Gun.

Hunting trips usually include a 4" Model 29 S&W.

Occasional use during extremely hot weather may bring out the S&W Model 64 stainless .38 Spl. revolver to allow for minimal cover garments.

Double-vs-single stack is kinda...generic. For instance, a subcompact double-stack 9 is only going to hold 10 shots or so, the same as a fullsize single-stack.

But on reflection, that's also pretty close to another important question: Do I want a thinner, taller gun, or a wider, shorter one?

I had always sort've scoffed at guys that claimed to CCW fullsize 1911s, thinking they must either live in fairly non-restrictive communities or be giants. But then I tried sticking a G34 in a holster--same length and width, much wider--and was rather surprised at how easy it was. Before, I'd thought about something like a Springfield XD if I ever decided to go .45 (XDs I've tried all failed to chamber if you slingshotted instead of hitting the slidestop, which I can't accept.

So now I'm thinking, huh, ten shots of .45ACP or 10mm is kind've interesting. Not enough to switch from my current heater, but something to think about down the road.

I used to carry a 640 Pro Series .357. Great shooter and much better quality than a regular 640-3 .357. But when the .380 M&P Shield EZ came out I brought one of the first and I loved shooting her more than my 640. She's a Great daily carry and a fun shooter.

My Glock 43 is a single stack. Same as 7 ounce Keltec P-32 or a 40 ounce 10mm 1911. Lot of variation in what people consider a good single stack carry gun.

My choice for the past 20 years has and will continue to be a Model 649-3 in .357. I would like to have one or two more rounds but I don't want any more weight or size.

Not quite sure how to answer this one.

I suppose I should go with 5-shot revolver since I've been carrying a 642 for several years. I like it because it works for me. Reasonably powerful, lightweight/compact enough to be easily carried, and I can shoot it well.

I also really liked carrying the 2" 64 I had, as well as a 3" 65, so 6-shot revolver would also be an option.

But my gun preferences are kind of in flux right now. I'm fine carrying my snub, but I'm planning on getting some kind of compact 9mm this year (*fingers crossed*). I'll probably still rely on the snub, but it would be nice to have the option of carrying something a little..."more."

I will say the 8-shot revolver would be too big for me and the derringer too small. Not that I wouldn't carry either, depending on the circumstances, but they definitely wouldn't be on my "favorite" list.

I dunno...*shrug*

Bottom feeder single stack based on my LC9 - which gives me 7+1 and a quick & easy 7 round reload of a good service caliber, but in a thinner lighter more compact package than a revolver - but with a very revolver-like, long (safe) trigger pull.

Pocket-carried J-frame all day every day, for twenty years. Same 640 for the last eighteen.

for awhile now i carry a 1911 commander in either 9mm or 45acp. I did carry a 2.5 in 686 for awhile I likes the feel of the 686 and the 1911.

Some additional options/guidance would have been nice. Especially for us retired old farts and/or those of us who may live in the country. What may seem reasonable for hanging out at home or a short drive to the local convenience store may not be what we'd pick for a longer drive or visitin' the city.

What WR Moore said.
Several years ago my response would be that my EDC was a Sig 1911 Ultra Compact (single stack bottom feeder). Today my 'most carried' is a 5 shot Mod. 649.
When I go to higher crime environments the 1911 is my companion. On a normal day the .38 Spl. revolver is along for the ride.
I am comfortable, practiced, and proficient with both options.

Default I guess the Shield......

I guess the Shield could be classified as a single stack bottom feeder. If we have a second choice it would be a J Frame revolver.

I like the way my 1911 carries, but that's good for the two legged critters. The four legged kind are big here and kind of tough to kill with a 45.. so I like to pack the double stack 10mm for walks in the forest.

and then there is usually a J-frame in my back pocket...

While working in LE it was a 1911 of some configuration all the time. Now that I am retired from that but working a full time security job it is usually a Glock 19 or a Shield but often my M&P 340 in the front pocket while in the house. I go up on the Grand Mesa often with my labs and then take one of my many larger wheel guns for walking and camping time. It varies depending on where I am going.

I alternate depending on weather (Summer heat) between 5-shot Model 60 357 Mag J-frame or XDS 45 app. The j-frame carries amazingly easy.

Are you trying to decide what you should carry or just asking in general?

If your'e trying to decide for yourself, there's only one correct answer; which do you shoot best? Carry that one.

Gotcha!

I still think there should be a 7th option. If I carry, it's because I might need to save my life or the lives of my loved ones. In that situation, I want the gun I shoot the best (that I can still conceal of course). What I carry today could easily change if I find I shoot something else better.

Find “San Francisco barber shop gunfight”. Guy with a gun shot 9 times at two police officers, hitting one in the leg early in the 7-8 second fight. Officers shot 26 times, including at least one slide lock reload, hitting the guy 18 times. He was still talking and living at this point, although he did stop shooting. He later died.

So again, how much ammo is enough? Five shots? Seven from a puny caliber? My life is worth more effort and expense than that.

Switching from a M&P 9c double stack to a Sig 365 single stack. Both have 12+1 capacity, but the Sig is smaller and lighter compared to the M&P. My other single stack carry gun is a Springfield RO compact in 45ACP. My surviving S&W is a M&P45c resigned to nightstand duty.

This brings up an interesting point. The Sig 365 is neither single nor double stack. It's some kind of hybrid between the two.

It is double stack from the 3rd to the 10th/12th round.

I picked 5-shot revolver, but having a single option for choice doesn't allow for me to also choose single stack pistol.

My most often chose retirement weapons are either a 5-shot snub or a single stack .380, 9 or .45, depending on clothing choices, weather, planned activities, etc.

I choose the gun/caliber for how well it fits my planned activities, as well as my daily risk assessment ... and sometimes simply my whim. All of them have seen their fair share of range time being used for quals, training/drills and general practice while I worked as a firearms instructor.

I LOVE my S&W 60 in 357 mag. Only 5 shot,but I carry the 6 shot re-load strip.
I also love my Kel-Tec P-11 holding 12 rounds of 9mm Luger.
I sometimes carry a KAHR CW-45, totaling 7 rounds.

FOR ABOUT 3 DECADES, AFTER MY RETURN FROM VIETNAM, IN 1969, MY EDC WAS A FULL SIZE COLT, MK-IV, SERIES 70, GOLD CUP. I USED CHIP McCORMICK, 10 ROUND MAGS. ONE ROUND IN THE CHAMBER, COCKED AND LOCKED---A FULL MAG IN THE WEAPON, AND TWO FULL MAGS ON MY BELT, GAVE ME A TOTAL OF 31 ROUNDS. AND YES---I WAS JUST IN THE MOOD FOR A GOOD FIREFIGHT ! ! ! IF YOU CAN'T HANDLE A SITUATION WITH 31 ROUNDS OF .45 ACP, HOLLOWPOINT, ITS TIME TO CALL A DUST OFF CHOPPER, TO GET YOUR BUTT OUTTA THERE.......

NOW, IN MY OLD AGE, AND WITH PHYSICAL LIMITATIONS, I HAVE TROUBLE LOADING MAGS, RACKING SLIDES, AND CLEARING JAMS. I HAVE GIVEN UP THE USE OF SEMI-AUTO PISTOLS. MY ATTITUDE HAS MELLOWED, AND MY RANGE OF TRAVEL HAS BEEN CURTAILED, AS WELL......

I NOW FEEL WELL ARMED WITH EITHER MY 2 1/2", M686+, OR MY 642-1. FOR RISKY SITUATIONS, I CARRY THE 2 OF THEM, SIMULTANEOUSLY---THE 686+ IN A CROSS DRAW, ON MY BELT, AND THE 642, IN A MIKA, POCKET HOLSTER. I CARRY 2 BIANCHI, 6 ROUND SPEED STRIPS. THAT GIVES ME 24 ROUNDS IN TOTAL, OF SPEER, GOLD DOT, .38 SPL+P, HOLLOW POINTS, FOR SHORT BARRELS. THAT'S STILL QUITE A BIT OF FIREPOWER, IMHO......

SOOO, AT ONE TIME, I WAS A SINGLE STACK, BOTTOM FEEDER. NOW I CARRY WHEEL GUNS, BUT MY CHOICE OF A 7 SHOT, WAS NOT REFLECTED IN THE OPTIONS. IN VIETNAM, I LEARNED THAT THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS HAVING TOO MUCH AMMO---ITS AKIN TO HAVING TOO MUCH MONEY......

So again, how much ammo is enough? Five shots? Seven from a puny caliber? My life is worth more effort and expense than that.

So you carry what? Glock 17 w 30 rd mags? .500 magnum? AR15 pistol?

LEOs are expected to confront a threat and neutralize it. LTC civilians just need to make a getaway.

I’ll stick with my 6-shot .38 + reload.

Looks like I'm in camp with the top two. When carrying a semi auto it's a Kimber single stack, but lately I've been carrying my model 69. But then there's warm weather, so it's a Glock 42 in my pocket. Oh, and a pre 27 at BBQs. Nevermind.......

I'm one of those that typically carries a 5" 1911 in a Sparks VMII-best iwb holster ever imho. However, once things warm up I move to a gen 1 M&P Compact 9, disappears under a t-shirt or untucked button down (my typical daily attire). Not everyone can but with my build (5'9" and 168lbs) I can do it quite easily.

A Shield .40 or 9mm is what I carry downtown. A 360 PD when I need a light very concealable gun and a Model 13 3" when we're Jeeping. And yes, a .44 mag. Mountain Gun for bear country.

Right on. I carry a Ruger LCR.38 in a pocket holster for casual use. Just grab gun and holster leave the house.

For going into the cities or depending on circumstances where bigger is better I have a XDs.45 in a inside waist band.

In a lot of the polls I am a bit out of step.
However, this time one and two are in line so far.
Normally I carry a series 70, but often like to just drop the Baby Chief in my pocket. Confident either way.

CB3, JUST OUT OF CURIOSITY, I AM WONDERING IF YOU HAPPEN TO KNOW THE CALIBER BULLET, THAT THE OFFICERS HIT THIS GUY 26 TIMES WITH ? ? ?

I WOULD VENTURE A GUESS, THAT IT WAS A 9MM. WHENEVER I READ OF INCIDENTS, WHERIN A CRIMINAL ENDURES MANY GUNSHOT WOUNDS, AND CONTINUES THE FIGHT, OR AT LEAST SURVIVES, THE 9MM WAS USUALLY WHAT HE WAS SHOT WITH......

I WAS NEVER ENAMORED OF THE 9MM. I SEE YOUNGSTERS, NEW TO SHOOTING, ON THE RANGE. THE VAST MAJORITY OF THEM ARE SHOOTING, HI-CAP, DOUBLE STACK, 9MM, SEMIAUTOS. THE LOW COST, AND AVAILABILITY OF AMMO, MUST PLAY A PART IN THIS, I'M SURE. THEY SEEM TO BE FOLLOWING THE SPRAY AND PRAY APPROACH TO MARKSMANSHIP. SOME OF THEM EVEN HOLD THEIR WEAPONS SIDEWAYS, LIKE THE IDIOTS THAT THEY SEE IN THE RAP "MUSIC" VIDEOS. I SHOOT IN THE VACANT PORT, THAT IS FURTHEST AWAY, FROM THEM......

IN ANY EVENT, I'M A FAN OF THE COLT 1911, IN .45ACP. I CARRIED ONE IN VIETNAM, AND A SERIES II, GOLD CUP WAS MY EDC, FOR MORE THAN 3 DECADES, SUBSEQUENTLY. I SERIOUSLY DOUBT, THAT IF YOU PUT 26 ROUNDS OF .45ACP, INTO A PERSON, HE'S GOING BE IN ANY SHAPE, TO DO MUCH TALKING.......

[QUOTE=one eye joe;140002810]CB3, JUST OUT OF CURIOSITY, I AM WONDERING IF YOU HAPPEN TO KNOW THE CALIBER BULLET, THAT THE OFFICERS HIT THIS GUY 26 TIMES WITH ? ? ?

I do not know the caliber. The officers shot a total of 26 rounds. Not all of them struck the individual. The video narrative said they hit him 18 times.

Obviously no one of these was a central nervous system, fight ending shot. The volume of holes, misplaced as they may have been, pretty much guaranteed his bleed out/demise.

A poorly placed .45 slug, or 18 of them, are not likely to cause a significantly greater amount of damage than 9mm slugs. Actual forensic evidence does not support the superiority of any modern defensive loading or caliber over another. There is just too little difference. Penetration and destroying part of the central nervous system are fight stoppers. Loads that meet at a minimum the FBI standards, including 9mm, are roughly equally effective.

The point of my post was simply that even 18 hits in a real gun battle did not immediately end the fight. Five or six rounds from a revolver (or 9 hits from two revolvers) would have even less effect, or even 7 or 8 rounds from a single stack, especially if it was a caliber that does not meet FBI standards.

Those who feel confident that they will prevail in a real gunfight with six rounds vs. more are welcome to their opinion. Some may, especially if they are lucky. Others may not, because they actually did not have the skill (or luck) to hit the central nervous system and incapacitate the attacker before the attacker could kill the defender. The main point is, no pistol round, including .45 ACP, is really powerful. Most pistol wounds are survivable and have much less effect than we desire on motivated attackers.

Just saw another video from Pasadena, TX. Basically, suicide by cop. Stopped motorist gets out of his car, points his gun at deputy who was already pointed in. Cop drills the guy six times, apparently all hits, at about 25 feet. The guy staggers away from his car, does a death spiral in the middle of the road trying to point his gun at the deputy, actually is able to fire a round about 10 seconds after being shot, and the deputy nails him again with multiple shots. Slowly he stumbles, drops his gun, falls, and keeps moving on the ground for another 10 seconds. He was a potential threat after being hit multiple times for about 30 seconds. To use your caps: PEOPLE DONT DIE WHEN SHOT WITH PISTOLS AS FAST AS WE WANT. If they are not dead and still have a weapon, they are still a threat.

I carry a Full Size M&P 9mm AIWB, 17+1, and a spare 23 round extended mag. I don’t find it any more inconvenient to carry than a smaller gun. I don’t believe in spray and pray, but I also don’t believe six is enough in some really tough situations, especially with multiple attacker’s. That’s my choice and opinion.

However, I notice that those who go into harm’s way professionally do not carry six shot revolvers or .380 auto 8 shot pocket pistols as their primary means of defending their lives. Yes, they used to, and when their gun was empty after three seconds, better equipped bad guys (even if wounded) would come up and shoot them dead. That’s not the way I want to go.
