Default PA will terminate reciprocity agreement with Virginia

I saw this on the York news and confirmed it on the Attorney General's web site. The reciprocity agreement for carry permits between Pennsylvania and Virginia has been terminated by the PA Attorney General effective May 16, 2018. Luckily Virginia does issue non-resident carry permits by mail. If you currently hold a PA License to Carry a Firearm watch your step in Virginia until you can get a Virginia carry permit.

Quoting from The Morning Call:

"Virginia may be for lovers, but Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro has little affection for that state’s gun laws.

So the southern state’s residents soon will no longer be able to tote concealed carry weapons into Pennsylvania, Shapiro announced Monday. The change comes after his office determined Virginia’s background check system falls short of the mental health, juvenile criminal record and other screenings performed in Pennsylvania."

We are headed back to the days of a highly fractured system of CCW permit recognition.

To what political part does the attorney general belong?

Checked on "US Handgun Laws" website.... it says "Virginia Honors all other States permit/licenses"...... so looks like we can still go into Va. but not the other way around.

Confirmed on Pa. Atty General's Reciprocity website...........Pa residents can/will still be able to carry in Va.

This kind of thing seems to change for a state here or there as they get into pissing contests. My Utah NRes used to be no good in Nevada & now is. Kalif accepts virtually no other state permits & many do not accept Kalif for that reason.

As long as VA doesn't do anything "back" at Pennsylvania you are correct.

Maybe someone is still upset about the Army of Northern Va. marching into Pa. back in 1863.

Yeah, and how did that work out for them?

I understand that this is considered a serious matter but my sense of humor demands I submit:

IIRC another time Virginians carried arms into Pennsylvania they were met at a place called Gettysburg and the half that weren't killed fled.

There are a whole lot of gun owners/concealed carriers who don't care for the idea of any sort of national reciprocity, Constitutional right or not.

If you doubt that, just do a simple search for the topic on this forum and other gun forums. When I say "a whole lot of gun owners", I could probably be talking about thousands.

They don't want "The Government" setting the rules and/or requirements gun owners would have to adhere to in order to enjoy national reciprocity.

A lot of gun owners see this as a states' rights issue. Unfortunately, some states can't stop bickering and nitpicking among themselves to get it all squared away, and this latest thing with Pennsylvania and Virginia is a prime example of that.

Maybe this is payback for a Virginia native and CCW permit holder shooting a politically connected thug in Philadelphia several years ago. Found to be justifiable.

Not that I visit PA anymore, but does anyone there know a county up there that does out of state permits? The county I used to live in, lo decades ago, quit.

BTW, the Virginia AG did something similar over similar unfounded allegations several years ago.

Yes and a group made up of many people from Penn. went down to Virginia at a place called Bull Run (Manassas Junction for all you southerners) and got sent packing thanks largely to a guy nicknamed "Stonewall". That guy was by far the most brilliant general of the war and had he not been shot by friendly fire the whole war may have ended very differently. He was that good.

Lee was pretty good too. Starting at the Wilderness in Va. and on to Spotsylvania and again on to the Chickahominy River, Lee's smaller army pulverized the larger and better equipped northern troops. Grant had thought that sending more armies and larger armies into the war would overwhelm the south. Instead he just sent more men to their deaths - a lot of them. He famously wrote later that, " “I have always regretted that the last assault at Cold Harbor (in the Chickahominy River battle) was ever made.”

The north won because they had the factories to build guns. Go figure. Those factories are in the south now.

States rights issues are popping up again especially in Califateia. Let's hope cooler heads prevail this time.
