Why would you use one load in the gun and a backup speed loaders with a different round??? Do you believe one is better?? If so why not use it when you carry and your back up?? Be Safe,

Because you can't efficiently load wadcutters from speedloaders. Speedloaders are faster than speed strips I think the 200 grain Wadcutter is more effective. NYPD Stake Out Squad Jim Cirillo used wadcutter because they incapacitated with certainty.
We also have bears and mountain lions. I trust the wadcutter over the hollow point for penetration.

Not exactly EDC, but I've been known to pack a Colt Single Action Army .44 Special loaded with Underwood 240 JHP's from time to time, usually during Pioneer Days, Early Settlers Days, or similar celebrations. More for historical effect than anything, but I'm sure it would handle just about any defensive situation as well today as it could a century ago.

I agree that you can not load wadcutters as efficiently as the standard bullet profile. You really cannot go wrong with most 44 special loads. I used to use Winchester Silvertips, now I carry Speer GoldDot 200 gr. We have little bears and cougars in the UP. Be Safe,

I don't carry it much since I retired, but I still have my much beloved S&W 696. I can carry it when I feel the need.

I carry my 696 more in the colder month, because the extra layers of clothing help conceal it. I'm currently carrying a Taurus 445 5 shot snubby loaded with 200 gr SWC. I like the full wadcutter idea, but only have them in .358" right now. However I will be looking for some. I like the Speer Gold Dots as well.

44 special is likely my favorite caliber.
Packed this Colt from time to time during deer season.
I have since retired it due to it's condition and their cost these days.
Second pic is one I have grown to like very much.
Packs well, feels great in the hand. Less expensive to shoot.
Little later model than I'm used to but..I got over that.

Close to my setup.
Same gun. JRT holster IWB.
5 rounds Hornady 180grXTP ammo in the gun and in a 5-round speed strip in left front pocket.

Back when I had my Charter Arms Bulldog, I loaded warm 240 hard cast SWC's when I carried that gun backpacking in bear and moose country. For self defense of the two legged variety, I would probably load a dead soft swaged lead 240 grain SWCHP to about 900 / 950 fps. Sort of like the old FBI load, on steroids. The Gold Dots have a pretty good reputation as well.

For those of you carrying WC's, how fast are they going?
Everyone seems to love the 44 special 200 WC, and I would like to duplicate it (velocity wise) in my 41 special to play around with it.

I cast my own 44 wadcutters and run them at 850 - 900 FPS using Unique. I have a heavier wadcutter for the 44, but the 200 gives me a happy medium of weight / velocity.

I carried this one a 396 and still do on occasion, but my 325 kind of beats it out most days now that I have it
396 and 5 spare rds in speed strip 1.72lb or 27.5oz
325 and 6 spares in dbl clips 1.95# or 31oz

A true conundrum, I would have to close my eyes and pick one, otherwise I would spend the day comparing 5 44 spec to 6 45 ACP, the .23 pounds?? I would prob end up with one strong side and the other cross draw. Not a conundrum, but a fortuitous situation anyone would like to be in!! Be Safe,

They're not my usual EDC, but I have these if I feel like it. A blue 2.5" and a stainless 3" Taurus 431. They fit in the majority of K-frame holsters...

It isn't exactly "EDC" but under winter clothing, this 624 Lew Horton Special 3" works well. I fairly recently acquired one of the original black pancake S&W holsters for it, obtained from another forum member here. Great combination, particularly with the Ahrends stocks.

How about some photos with the holster? I'm not familiar with them.
I had a really nice pancake holster for a Combat Commander made by Jackass Leather. In my opinion the holsters were better before they became Galco.

Here are a couple of shots of the S&W holster specifically made for the 624 3", front and back. It's a quality piece. I also have a Galco pancake open-top (no thumb-break), but I prefer the relative security of the thumb-break design.

Do you know you made the holster for S&W? I'm guessing Galco.
I have some thumb break holsters. What I really like about Kramer Holster is there is a snap, real snug fit. I only carry concealed so I don't use a retention holster. Too old and wore out to start any fights.

Sorry- I don't know who made the holster. The style of stitching does not match the Galco open pancake holster I also have.

When I carry a .44 as opposed to my .45, it's a CA Bull Dog, 2.5" and Winchester Silvertips.

OK, John, I've been down here in PHX for 3 years... I've yet to need more than an extra shirt. What the heck do you call "winter clothing"???

The holster was made by Smith and Wesson Leather, a division of S&W in Lillington, NC. The company/factory was later sold and became Gould and Goodrich Leather (G&G). It has been sold several times since it was S&W, but is still open for business at its original location.

There are in fact several days per year that I would call "winter" in Phoenix in which a very light jacket would be best to conceal an N-frame. Here is a shot of one of our cars when it actually snowed, taken right after we had to drive through it. By the way, I'm 79 years old and a Phoenix native - and I've seen this exactly twice!

Sounds like the UP of Mi, we have a few days of summer each year.In 24 years it has NOT snowed in July or August, though I have been told it has happened! So you can carry your 4" SW 500 through out the year. Be Safe,

Hah! Love it! The way a little rain gets covered like it's a Martian invasion on TV down here, that must've taken over the coverage for days!

That 500 is for a young man to carry. It's a back breaker for an old guy. I carry it from the truck to where I'm going to shoot it.
In the high country here we have had snow every month of the year. Mostly above 12,000 feet. Doesn't amount to much in the summer but it's snow.

For those who carry a 44Spl. as an EDC/CCW,which new revolver is the better choice:Model 69-2.75 bbl. or 629 Delux w/3 in. bbl.? I have narrowed it down to these two, thoughts & opinions. Thanks. Factory ammo choices will be helpful.

For me the one extra round of the 629 isn't worth the extra size and weight over the L framed 69. I've been loading mine with Speer Gold Dot 44 specials.

I agree with that statement whole heartedly and take it one step further.
For me the extra weight of the L frame isn't worthwhile when I can get the same 5 rounds of 44 special in a Colt Detective Special sized package and a weight under 20 ounces - with a CA Bulldog 44

Junglefighter, hi, I have both, the 629-4 3” would be the last 44 I would carry, the 69 is a wonderful 44.and carried a lot. Buuuuut the CA bulldog is pocket carried the most! There I said it!!!!!
Please forgive me for I have sinned. I will shoot 10 Hail Marys and reload 100 hour fodders. Lol

The reviews I have read, very few, have all been positive on the new CA Bulldog. Where I live,no one stocks this revolver and I have not seen one in a long time, either for sale or at the range. The same is true of the 69,they stock them, sell them and I have never seen one at the range. If I buy a 69 2 3/4 in. bbl.it will be a buy never having firing one. This will not change my mind on purchase, but it would be nice to shoot one first.
