Default Wierd open-carry experience

I was in Michigan a couple days ago when at the end of the stone jetty, I decided to leave as the mayflies were biting rampantly and I was without my shirt. Well, 98% of the people at this public beach are from Illinois and have never seen anyone open-carrying I imagine. Anyway, as I got up to leave a dozen people or so turned around and started to run away from me and my holstered pistol. I walk faster than they can run on the huge granite slabs that make up the jetty. I have trans-versed them many times over several decades. As I walked by each one of them I was amazed at how afraid they were for absolutely nothing. The Democrats are constantly instilling lies, fear and mass-hysteria in them and it is getting totally ridiculous.

I see open carriers on a regular basis. Not every day, but regularly. I have yet to see anyone run from one or appear to be frightened by them.

I have to admit to feeling slightly uneasy at the sight of one open carrier myself, though. On his belt were not one but three LARGE fixed blade knives. I didn't measure, of course, but the largest had to be at least 12 inches. This was just a few days after the new Texas knife law took affect allowing blades 6 inches and larger to be carried. Odd that I felt uncomfortable seeing the large blades where if he were carrying a pistol I wouldn't have worried about it. Nothing bad happened, of course, and I still feel a bit silly that I reacted that way, but I can't deny it.

Same here. I live with a National Forest surrounding me and lots of locals shoot regularly close to town and OC is fairly commonplace. Even in the now 'Large' city of Bend, OR, OC is still not uncommon.

I wouldn't call it entirely 'uneasy' but I had a similar situation recently. I was in a LGS in Bend and this tall, goofy looking guy comes in with two guns on his belt in holsters that were pointing toward each other - kind of like a bandito in a spaghetti western. My point being this was a show of 'bravado' as opposed to 'conservative' Open Carry. His voice and appearance followed suit.

You should do a search on Open Carry threads. See how many of them are locked. I give this one 15 posts.

I don't blame them, or find them weird. If you can read, not a strong point of the open-carry folks I know personally, this can be an unsettling time for people. I think most people who open carry do so just to show off, or seem tough.

Hopefully this post will make them mad enough to add me to their ignore list.

Another open vs concealed carry thread in a firearms forum. Popcorn for breakfast instead of dinner for me today. I have seen some nasty flame threads on this topic. I hope this one stays level headed during its short life expectancy.
I have a list of pluses and minuses for both methods that I have garnered from both lots of reading of several on-line boards, and thousands of miles of walking out and about in the real world. For me, it is all about only two things: 1. Being able to stop the threat. 2. Immediately.

Talking MAYBE IT WAS THE NIPPLE RINGS?

A combination of shirtless AND open carry? If/when open carrying, having something "weird" happen should not come as a surprise. Do as you please, but DON'T EXPECT EVERYONE to be friendly understanding pro gun types.

Hey, I'd be a little uncomfortable seeing some shirtless guy walking around open carrying a gun at the beach. Open carry is great if you're hiking, camping, hunting, in the woods, desert etc., but in public, keep it concealed. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

Although perfectly legal I don't open-carry anywhere anymore. Not in the desert, not in the woods, not in the boonies, and especially not anywhere among the general public. Especially when out in the wilderness, "bad-guys" will show their true colors faster and sooner if they think I'm unarmed.

I don't open carry for the same reason I no longer proudly display my NRA affiliation on my vehicles...why call unnecessary attention to myself?

I have found most times in life discretion is the better part of valor.

Recently, my wife and I were shopping in a discount eyeglass store. The place was quite busy. A black man and his family into the store to buy some glasses. The man and his wife were open carrying semi autos in belt holsters. The people in the store looked, as did the employees. Of course my wife and I did as well. Other than the people taking notice, there was no incident whatsoever. The man and his wife made their purchase and left. My wife and I are retired police sergeants and commented to each other that these people were quite an anomaly and must have really had big nads.

Last night while at the grocery store picking up a few things. Found a couple packs of great rib steaks on sale for $5.97 a lb. MMMMMM
Anyway got to the checkout and the young guy in front of me wearing work clothes was buying some baby food and wearing a plastic fantastic of some sort. Nobody, freaked, commented, acted in anyway concerned. Jus another guy in a store in Montana. Around here you don't see it often, but when you do its just something a bit interesting. I moved back to Montana to this location 9 years ago. Since then 0 murders or armed robberies. But, hey part of that might be because that even though you might not see them much the guns are there.

I recall many years ago when my shooting buddy and I were having breakfast at the small restaurant by the access road to Gunsite, which is near Sedona, a major tourist point in Arizona. Virtually the whole class of 32 were in the restaurant. All of us were open carrying, almost all .45 automatics. Nobody cared, UNTIL a tourist couple, 60-somthing, probably from CA judging by their "accents" came in. They got about half way across the restaurant and then "Marcia" said to "John", "MY GOD, EVERYBODY IN HERE IS CARRYNG A GUN." They left. We laughed our butts off.

As in Montana, here in Kentucky, open carry is not unusual, and not alarming, but when some one does OC, a lot of times it sort of depends on what an individual looks or acts like. Most people here OP's before they start school but but with what people are doing nowdays it can be a little unnerving.. Carrying in a vehicle is legal , loaded or un loaded in a glove box with or with out a permit. But common sense should be used. when carrying.

I say do what you want and don’t worry about others.
People think no one knows they’re carrying when wearing “shoot me first” garb such as ....
Hawaiian shirts, loose fitting shirts or fanny packs ....which scream cc to me and most people I know anyways.

Open carry in the "concrete jungle" is usually chaotic. People just don't understand the way some people live.

Open carry (OC) will usually result in a visit from the police even though it is legal around here, and has been for years. My daughter is a 911 operator and fields calls for this constantly. When she tells the caller it is legal they want to see a police officer anyway, who only tells them the same thing.

Mayflies biting? Weird, Mayflies don't bite here in my part of KS.

It is cool that is all you had to do to get the libs to run away from you, tho. I have wave my arms around, jump up and down, and make really loud pterodactyl noises.

In the past couple of years I've seen probably 15 folks about 4 were women, open carrying handguns in belt holsters. They were in stores, at gas pumps, or on the sidewalk. Most were in Walmart, I never saw any reaction from anyone outside of a couple of second glances.
I never have in town although it is legal here.

Yeah......walking around shirtless with a gun on his hip! Was he stopping to flex too? Drawing attention to himself.

It's the oddity. After it becomes common, you'll barely notice it. Human nature.

I could open carry with an IWB holster and it would still be concealed.

We have a good friend who lives on a small island on a lake in Minnesota near an entry portage to the Boundary Waters. He is a gun owner, but went on a big rant last year because someone came off the lake open carrying and he could not get over that someone would do so in a wilderness area. No amount of argument would change his mind. Folks have their own interpretations of reality!

The only time I open carry is when I am not planning on going into stores, or other businesses. I live in a rural setting and I do open carry to and from the range and work (LEO), hiking, scouting for big game, hunting predators, or other time spent outdoors. I do carry a cover shirt in the vehicle in case I need to go into a gas station, etc. For the most part, open carry in populated areas is not for me. That's a tactical decision.

That said, I have nothing against folks that do open carry in public. I see folks open carrying in Walmart, grocery/drug stores, etc., and it doesn't bother me much, unless they look really shady, which is seldom. One thing I don't like to see is their sidearm in one of those super cheap nylon gun show holsters that look as though the gun could fall out at any time.

I believe that a 12" long fixed blade knife worn on a belt is just ridiculous, unless you are sticking pigs on a regular basis or you are in a combat zone. There is a young guy in my neighborhood that wears two big Bowie knives on his belt while walking his dogs with his wife and their child in a stroller. I just want to tell him he should go buy a gun to protect himself and his family.

Just my .02

I open carry in my area (NEPA) 9 out of 10 times. I've been doing it for almost a decade.

Most times, nobody says a thing. Many people don't even notice. Recently I've been getting some positive feedback. I get strangers or employees of the establishment come up and tell me they feel safer seeing me armed.

I can count on one hand the number of truly negative encounters I've had over almost a decade. And I live in an area where visitors from NJ often visit.

I choose not to open carry

I have my reasons

However, I fully support your right to make your own decision on open carry.

Y'all enjoy your thread

In this society it seems it takes nads to be an individual.

The OP did not say what form of beach attire his holster was attached to. If he was wearing a Speedo, that would explain everything.

Slightly adrift of the theme here but this made my laugh so much. Identical situation but no guns, well not those type of guns. Beach in Negril with the wife, many gals topless including the wife and this allowed. A mid 40's couple came strolling out to the beach and another OH MY GOD moment. Their topless here! We're leaving now. Must of been the 38's some of the gals were packing. Amazing world we live in.
