Default Favorite Road Trip Gun?

I have a road trip coming-up to explore a few States and can legally CCW in all of them. I was trying to figure out what handgun to take. I'm leaning towards my Glock 27 in .40 S&W with an extra 9mm conversion barrel (choice of 2 calibers).

What's your favorite road trip gun and why is it your choice? Do you also take a long gun?

I travel a great deal and actually take two.

An S&W 642 is what I carry and have immediately accessible in the vehicle. The reason is for its quickness into action and strength in extreme close-quarter scenarios which are the types of encounters I'm most likely to be involved in as a civilian trying to mind his own business.

I also take a 9mm Glock. Primary use is bedside in hotels.

I don't see any realistic need to take a long gun.

You hit mine right on the head. Mine is a Glock 27, with only the .40 barrel. That is unless I am headed to a hunting camp, then it's a 686-0 or model 29-2.

My favorite road trip gun is also my favorite EDC... My Shield.
I don't see any reason to deviate or differentiate between EDC, HD, RT, or other activities.
... Except trap shooting... The Shield isn't that great for that. (the barrel's too short)

Just got back from an extended driving trip through the southeast states. Wore my S&W 442 all the time, carried my Glock 26 in my purse nearby, and had the AR in the wayback . . .

Default ROAD TRIPPERS

A 640 on my person, a Sig 226 9mm in a shaving kit with 5 spare mags & 25 Dixie tri ball shotgun rounds on the passenger seat, Beneli SBE with extended mag/ 24" bbl/ pistol grip stock, somewhere in the vehicle. And that's just to go gas up.

Primary is the Kimber Custom CDP .45 full-size 1911, 4 mags. Back-up is the S&W Model 64 2" Round-butt .38 Special, 2 speedloaders. Truck gun is either the Remington 870 12-gauge, 10 rounds, or the Inland .30 M1 Carbine, 3 mags.

Based on clothing requirements, I carry a 9MM Shield or a S&W 642 with one reload for each. Both are easy to conceal but the 642 is usually worn when concealment is the primary concern. I have carried J-frames for decades and have a special bias toward wheel guns. Carried 1911s as primary for years with a J-frame backup. The Shield won me first time I picked one up. Ergonomics are excellent for me. Good luck.

If I am hunting a 629 or 57 will go along, plus 2 long gun for hunt. A pair of Sigma 40F's in Black Hills Horsehide dual shoulder rig, ( photo of holster in my albums) if any one is interested, with double mag pouch, plus a FEW spare mags. A 638, and a derringer or 2 just to balance things out, depending on location and weather. I do not want to find I need it when I do not have it. Few boxes of all necessary ammo if I will be shooting targets at destination. I have room in the vehicle, why restrict myself. Be Safe

Depends on where I'm going and what I plan to do.
For instance, I'm taking a trip from PA to FL in the near future. No requirement to conceal in PA but FL is strict about concealing and I'll likely be wearing light weight cloths so I'll take something small like my LCP or j-frame. A few months ago we went to upstate PA for a week, I took a 9mm Glock because it was PA and a little cooler.
I'll take a couple extra mags (or speed loaders) but I have yet to realize the need to take more than one firearm, quite the opposite actually, I don't want extra guns laying around or packed away while traveling, one gun under my control all of the time. If my wife chooses to carry, same thing applies.

In summer my Beretta PX 4 in 9mm 13+1 probably would be carried IWB with my Sig P238 in a holster in my back pocket as my BUG ..

In winter with a bit more clothing worn so cover is a bit easier
my Sig Legion P229 in 40 OWB with my Sig P238 in coat pocket in
a sticky holster ..

Extra appropriate mag on off side for both pistols when carrying each ..

It's my usual EDC, a 1.0 M&P 40 compact in a 5.11 brand holster undershirt under my left arm. It's invisible in that location, easy to access while seated, and I won't forget it whenever I leave my vehicle. I also carry a spare holstered magazine in my left front pants pocket.

The main out of state places I travel to are the nearby states of NM, CO, OK, and KS. Fortunately, they all permit me to carry with my Texas license. The only problem (for some of you) would be with with New Mexico, which limits out of state licensees to carrying only a single gun.

I see no reason to carry what I carry everyday a Shield 9 with the 8 round mag and the 7 round mag in my weak side pocket. If that won't get the job done I'm not sure what more I would need.

We don't change our EDC when traveling. My husband just takes his cabled lock box out of his truck and locks it to my car seat. Those cable boxes come out for visits to homes where children may be, and carry is difficult, like poolside.

Have a good trip.

I trend the opposite direction. If I'm traveling to the beach for vacation, I usually take less than what I carry normally. Might just be a Kel-Tec .380 or my 442 for the whole week, and it stays on me everywhere I go.

If it's an actual road trip up to the mountains, it's usually my 60-15 with a variety of ammo on speedstrips.

While I feel well armed with my 3913 in my "Burb of the Burgh"..... when I travel far from home I tend to favor a 6906/04 in a Milt Sparks IWB holster (Summer Special or Executive Companion) ; extra 15 rd 59xx magazines w/ +2 grip adapters. Generally have 2-3 twenty round boxes of 9mm in the truck or trunk. ( about 100 rds)

The 69xx guns are really no harder to conceal than the 3913NL w/ Hogue Wood grips.

Surprised at the number of long guns....thou I will admit to taking a 10/22 take-down or RAR Compact in .22magnum (9round rotary mag./1-4x20 scope) as part of my emergency kit on long trips/ vacation. A Mini-14 tends to accompany me to the cabin..... 10/20 round factory magazines and a 1-3x20 Weaver scope'......lower profile/more PC looking than an AR; the 10rd factory magazines are almost flush fit...... but still double the 5 round standard Ruger mag. The 1-3 scope gives me great coverage from point blank to 200 yds.

While having a gun is 'nice"; an emergency kit will, if the SHTF ,be as much if not more important......water,food, fire, proper cloths and boots, good knife , flashlight w/ extra batteries...........

Think I've been watching to much of "The Walking Dead" and FTWD!!!

I take a Glock 26 for states where there are magazine restrictions, otherwise a Glock 19. The G26 makes it somewhat easier to dress around during the summer season, so that may also enter into consideration.

I might take a 642-1 to keep locked in the vehicle safe as a backup, (not on my person), but otherwise that gun is limited to duty within walking distance of my home.

1911. Then I never have to worry about running afoul of any states with hi-cap mag restrictions.

Normally a Rock Island 1911 in the center console and either a Shield 9mm or if I feel I might need more rounds a Springfield Armory XD sub compact for carry.

My 442 is always on me and my EDC but for road trips I'm also including my Glock 19 and a spare mag in my counsel and hotel nightstand.

This is true for the gun you carry on your person in NM. However, you can legally carry one on your person and another (or two) anyhere else in your vehicle in NM. Not required, but it's best to carry it out of sight, which is fine.Your vehicle is basically treated the same as your home so it's possible to have a backup close at hand while traveling. My wife does not carry on her person much but the gun in the bag is available to her if she needs it while I am out of the vehicle with my EDC. And it'd always good to have a back up!

Thanks for all the great info.

This was kind of my thought process. That's why I didn't want to bring a long gun. No where to secure it in the car, and a pain to bring into the Hotel or secure it if not in the room.

I know Colorado has a 15 round limit. Does this mean someone passing through can't bring an over 15 rounder mag with them? If anyone knows.

Taurus 605 instead of my S&W 638 if I'm in a place where it stands a higher chance of being stolen. Like if I'm in a big city and I have to leave it in the car to go to a concert or some other non-permissive environment.

You mentioned ‘one’ handgun to take. If the bias is more toward defense your Glock sounds like the perfect choice, but for all around use with a smaller chance of social encounters I would tend toward a 3” model 60-10 in .357, adjustable sight. Not too big or small, plenty of power but not 15 rounds available. Be safe out there!

Normally either G26 or G27, a Taurus 856 Ultralight magnesium 6 shot 38 Special is in the bino case / BOB, and a 380 auto for good measure. If there is a good chance I'll be attending some sort of shooting activity, all bets are off as I may need the big rig...

I don't really see any advantage to change carry guns just because you're going on a multistate road trip. I would suggest keeping it simple yet to the point. No extra 30 round mags in the trunk, no rifles or shotguns, claymores, dummy hand grenades or thousands of rounds in the trunk. Not a good idea. lol.

Just pack your normal everyday carry gun and a extra mag and keep in in a holster and be responsible with it always in how you carry it and transport it.

Since I carry Two J-Frames daily, it’s the same for traveling. If it is a camping trip, I’ll add a Riot gun, 4” 357 and a 1911 / 45. When we go to Florida for Three Months of the winter, I’ll take a few J-Frames and maybe the 4” for the Range.

Not to hi-jack ...... but some related travel thoughts/tips.........

Just remembered a video by Bill Wilson and Ken Hackathorn.... in it they talk about having a gun with a rail on the road.....so they can clip on a light in their motel/hotel room at night.... unfamiliar surroundings ...

I've always had a 100+ lumin AA or AAA flashlight with my gun but a weapons light does make some sense... I'd like both........ also

night sights are great for finding your gun at night in a strange room.

Finally some of the new Ruger take-down guns are interesting in that one can "secure them" by leaving half in the car/truck and half in the room when you're not around........same could be done with a Mossburg shotgun.

Not hard to snap together........a 10/22 take down.... don't know about the new 9mm.

A "Bag Chair" carry bag makes a good PC/low key way to transfer the halves.

As a truck driver, road trips were 6 days a week, every week.

44 Mag tucked in the sleeper. NAA Sidewinder 22 Mag in my pocket and Kimber Pro Carry 45 AIWB.

Never know where I'd end up.

That's the one thing my G27 will be missing. My only option is to step-up a frame size, which I don't want to do. I've got a Surefire defender I'll keep next to it.

There are a few gun mounted light options available for the subcompacts Glocks. The Streamlight TLR-6 is one example.

Thanks. Just ordered one. Only thing I don't like is it's not easy to take off.

I am not sure what the addl bbl gets you for a road trip, but I find my G26 gets it done for anyplace I am in the city. if I was planning to hike a trail with big nasty things that could bite or claw me, then something like a g20 seems a good idea.

If things go horribly wrong, extra caliber versatility. And 9mm ammo seems to be more prevalent than .40.

If I had just a 26, I'd be fine with just 9mm. But having just the 27, I'm not sure I want to trust my life to a caliber conversion in 9mm.

Shoot, I also have a .357 Sig barrel. I could go with 3 different calibers. But that might be overkill.

IIRC the original purpose-driven S&W road pistol came out in in 1935 on an N frame with a 6" or so barrel loaded with 158 grain pointed, metal-piercing .357 ammo.

It's direct descendant and 24 rounds of similar ammo live in my road trip bag.

I know six rounds at a time may seem like a disadvantage but that is how I trained and I wouldn't trade a bottomless magazine for the familiarity or the penetration.

Just 1/50th of a dollar's worth. JD

I travel with: 642, .45 Shield locally.
When I go to Fl. I carry above + XDM .40 with light, Rem 700 Ti .270,
S&W 629 & Rem 11-87 + a range bag loaded with ammo.
There are numerous wild hogs on the property & I have all bases covered with the others.

It's been a few years since I traveled out of state, but I generally took an Improved Model 56 (2" Model 15) and a nickel SB Model 37. Model 15, O'Rourke OWB and FBI loads. Model 37, Renegade and 110gr Silvertips. Speedloaders and speed strips for each. I may change the ankle gun to 642, because it is sighted for 158gr bullets, which are maybe better, and work well in the 15 without changing sights.

I’m on a road trip right now. S&W Model 19-3 full of 145 grain Silvertips. I have two zip-strips of the Silvertips in my pocket.

My oldest son is driving. When we started I asked if he was packing. He said yup. No telling what he’s toting.

When its me and the wife in our SHO I usually toss my $75 cut-down JC Higgins 12 gauge pump in the trunk in case of the apocalypse. No room for it in this Fiesta ST.

Combat Commander. After carrying some form of 1911 for most of fifty years, it is the first choice. The only thing likely to change is where I carry it. Sitting in a car, a pistol in a belt holsters on the right hip gets trapped nicely between the console and seatbelt. May as well be on the far side of the moon! Driving, I like a simple horizontal shoulder rig.
