These new polyester uniform pants are making it a pain for me to settle on a carry gun, they are too thin to really hold a gun close to my leg. (limited to pocket carry)

Currently I'm running a 351PD which works perfect, but S&Ws aluminum gets beat up bad, so I am trying to work in my 649 to see if I can keep the heavier gun from printing.

If I CAN get the 649 to feel comfortable, I am wondering: how much different (bigger or heavier) does a 2" model 10 feel when pocket carried?

I see the cylinder width is only .14" difference, so adding an 1/8th inch might be worth the extra width, but I've never handled one so I don't know if it completely changes how the gun feels in the pocket.

Frame size J vs K..the J fits in any pocket I want. K frames are just a little to much for me.

K frames are kinda big for pocket carry. I have a alloy framed Model 12 Snubby. It light, but still too big for pocket carry. Although in the old days, some old timers carried N frames.. That's before the Chinese started making all of our clothes and pockets shrank.

My Model 10-7 snub is a square butt and much too heavy for a pocket. Makes my pants pull down, even w/the belt cinched tight, and the pocket sags quite a bit.

I've pocket carried my 642. I've owned a 2" 64. I would never even think about carrying a 2" 64 in my pocket. I've heard of people pocket-carrying a 2" Model 12 (airweight K-frame), so that could be an option, if you could find one.

Have you considered a 642/442? Relatively inexpensive and easily replaced if needed (makes wear-and-tear concerns less important, IMO), shoots .38 Special (standard pressure and +P), light enough for pocket carry, and, with proper load selection, controllable for quick follow-up shots.

Regardless of your gun choice, if you, or someone you know, has some sewing skills, you can reinforce the pocket. Several years ago when I worked as a security guard I had pants with the sap pocket behind the thigh. I couldn't carry a sap, but I could carry a MagLite. Unfortunately, the MagLite was too heavy for the pocket material. So I reinforced it with some denim material from an old pair of jeans and that did the trick (well, running wasn't fun... ). Heavier material may even help obscure the gun's outline, improving concealment. You could even enlarge the pocket to better fit a K-frame snub if you choose to carry one. You could also find a tailor to do the work.

Just some thoughts.

J-Frame is my number one choice for pocket holster carry.

I have carried a Colt Python in 2in, a Model 10 in 3in, and a 642....by FAR the 642 was THE gun to carry although the Python and Model 10 were MUCH prettier and nicer to show off LOL! I did a trigger job on my 642 and put on a Reiley small dot tritium fornt sight and that little thing was flat out AMAZING at anything up to 20 yards, especially when it was 10 yards and closer almost all the rounds were all right there. It was super light but wasn't bad to shoot with hot .38spl +p at all.

It depends on the pants you wear. I carried a 7 shot Taurus 357 in heavy jeans and cargo pants. I don’t do it often. 442 J-Fames are perfect for the pants I wear. One in the pocket and one AIWB daily.

I definitely hear you on the "depends on the pants" bit.

I have pocket carried a 657 UDR many times and been ok with it, but it takes a stiff pair of pants with deep pockets, something like the duluth cargos.

These polyester rip-stop 5.11s I have to wear have decent pockets, but are so flimsy I'm afraid everything is gonna show, not just the gun. =P

There are pants with pockets that can't carry a credit card. And there are pants that could carry the USS Missouri in their pockets.

Everything is relative.

Pocket Carry is the domain of the J frame.

Well, Kurusu is right. While an aluminum J frame is obviously a little easier than a steel K frame, the pants and the fit can vary A LOT. For the last half a year or so, I have been pocket-carrying a Model 12 SB with service grips and a Tyler about six days a week. You just have to buy the right brand of pants. I'm retired, and I don't get paid any extra for wearing the right clothing, and I will not use "cargo pockets," yet I have no trouble finding inexpensive cotton pants that render not noteworthy the Model 12 in a Don Hume JIT slide used as a pocket holster. I recommend using one for a larger pistol, like Cobra-sized for a Chief, or K-frame sized for a Cobra or Agent, or else a right-sized one that is well worn and loose. This may sound kind of rinky-dink, but I actually feel that it is the BEST pocket holster setup. I'm sure that there are others that are good.

As far as weight, the steel guns are not optimum, but they CAN be carried. I have pocket carried a 2" Model 15 in a worn JIT slide, and there was no problem. I WAS conscious of the weight, but it didn't show and my pants didn't sag (I had a good belt). And that was with Safariland/Rogers grips! I have no doubt that a 2" Model 10 can be concealed and carried in the right pants. You just have to buy loose-fitting pants that aren't designed to outline either your protective or your reproductive equipment.

I use old ruff-out suede IWB holsters with the belt clip removed for pocket holsters.
They prevent printing. The ruff-out finish anchors it in the pocket. The smooth lining protects the finish on your weapon.
I get them on e-Bay, never paying more than a few dollars each for one.

A 2” k frame is my main carry and I do it in right front pocket. I take my pants and have that pocket lengthen and reinforced. Jeans, dress shorts, slacks all work withe modified pocket. I also have a flat sheet of leather duct taped on the outside of my pocket holster. You can tell I have something in my pocket but it does not print as a gun. I can be standing with my hand in my pocket on the gun and no one knows. It can be pricey to do the alterations but it is worth it to me.

Since I'm not a seamstress off the rack for me.

Some days I carry a Kimber Pro Carry AIWB, a NAA Sidewinder in the left front (I'm left handed ) and a J frame in my left back pocket. Overkill ? probably, but you never know the hand you will be dealt.

The biggest problem with pocket carrying a K frame is the grip, which is substantially larger than a J frame.

As Haywood alluded to above, Taurus makes a 7 shot 357 that is a L frame cylinder in a K frame with a J frame grip. It is most definitely pocketable though it's a bit heavy for that purpose. I can't imagine why S&W hasn't copied the idea and made a 386 Compact or something similar.

The finish on my 642 looks like **** from pocket carry but function is fine. If I ever need it that is what counts. I have no idea why the finish boogers so badly since I don't carry anything else in that pocket. My first one did the same thing. I don't think I could pocket carry a k snub in jeans. IWB yep yep yep but that means an untucked shirt or a jacket. With a jacket I can IWB a N frame snub and even a 4 inch N fairly comfortably.

I pocket carried a Colt Lawman MKIII snub, which was slightly larger than a K frame, for one winter in heavyweight worsted wool uniform pants with canvas pockets. Try to find THOSE today. Darn near beat myself to death trying it in summer weight pants. J-frame or Colt DS/Agent/Cobra is the way to go IMHO. (Nothing against Charter, Rossi, Taurus or any of the other imports, but never used them).

The K really is a lot bigger, esp in the grip, and for me the weight difference is really noticeable.

You can sometimes reinforce clothing with interfacing. Some are adhesive that can be ironed on to give cloth greater rigidity.

Garments can use it to break up a pattern or add a little strength.

Try your local fabric shop or JoAnn Fabrics.

I've carried all-steel J-frames in pocket holsters for twenty years. I'm used to that much weight in a pocket but it's my limit. If I pocket carried a K-frame, (a) my pants would have to be stapled on, and (b) I would walk in little circles.

While I think the better answer is a J frame with the internal hammer (Centennial style), because the snag risk is far lower and closed frame means less risk of crud inside, if you are serious about the K frame, there are a few things you can to make it work better. (And I concur with the 2" RB M12, for the weight.)

1) Bobbed hammer.

2) Small-ish grips.

3) Tailored pocket, made a bit bigger, and with some kind of facing inside (my preference is the jean repair patch, ironed and then stitched.

4) A good pocket holster. I am a fan of the Kramer, but YMMV.

i have to put in a good word for Robert Mika's pocket holsters. i like the round bottom style. Robert is ex-law enforcement and has been building
holsters for many years. his holsters are simple, reasonably priced and they prevent printing. perfect for jframes.

As noted above, it depends on the pants. I pocket carried a M642 for years. But when I wear cargo pants I pocket carry a customized 2" M64. The 64 started life off DAO and I kept it that way; the bobbed hammer makes it very easy to carry in a leather pocket holster in the cargo pants.

Presently, since I shoot my M649 WAY better than I shoot my Airweight M 642 I switched to the 649 for EDC. It is in a Galco Pro pocket holster and it is perfect in jeans and cargo pants. I am not sure what happened to my holster for the M64 after the fire I had but if I find it and it is usable then the 64 will be back in the saddle....umm...pocket!

I had a 2" 64 and like several other here found it too big for my pockets. I often find a j frame a bit obvious in some of my pockets, but there's no way a K frame could be hid in any of my pants pockets.

Airweight Centennial disappears in my jeans pocket. Cant make a K frame fit.

Well, I haven't read all of the responses, but I carry a 340 PD most of the time, in a Galco horsehide pocket holster. This is a good fit. I wear Levi jeans most of the time. I have a couple of K frame (Model 10, and pre model 10) snubbies. But they are too bug and heavy to pocket carry.

An option, though, is (gasp!) a Colt D frame. The lightweight Agent fits in my same pocket holster, and has 6 rounds. But they haven't been made for some time, and the new "Cobra", is all steel, and as heavy as a Detective Special.

I do carry the Agent occasionally.

In these hot summer months I'll sometimes pocket carry a 337PD in cargo shorts.... when it's not possible to carry my 3913 IWB (with cover garment)

At 12oz it's about as light as you can get....... a gun to carry a lot and hopefully never discharge in need. Mine has a Big Dot front sight;I view it as a contact to 5yd weapon.

I PC, J-Frame myself .38 SPL+P 5 shots.
