Default Do you ever carry less than mag. capacity?

Does anyone else routinely carry fewer rounds than the max. capacity of your magazine in order to avoid excess weight?
My CZ 75D PCR is a very pleasant semi-auto to carry around on my belt, but if I load it full-up with 147 gr ammo it becomes a brick. I've lately been carrying it with only 10 rounds and find it much more pleasant to get along with. I may even try stepping down to 115 gr. bullets to see how much more that helps.

Forgive me for saying so but that seems a bit foolish. Carrying a gun is supposed to be comforting, not comfortable. Why carry a gun with less than a full magazine. Noone ever wished for less ammo in a gun fight.
Carry a smaller capacity semi if that is an issue or carry a J-frame with only five rounds. Most people will argue that that is enough rounds in a civilian encounter, in most cases.

No

If weight is an issue I find a firearm that is constructed differently or carry a smaller firearm

I agree with Marshall tom. If you're Barney Fife then you only get one bullet for your revolver. I carry 8+1in my .380 Shield EZ and two 8 round mags in my mag pouch on my belt under my t-shirt. 25 rounds of Hornady 95 grain FTX.

In the context of "civilian-ccw-self-defense" I like loading to capacity so I can always speak confidently to exactly how many rounds actually left "my" handgun.

"Comfortable" is a subjective issue. It sounds like you need to consider a smaller, lighter, reliable, single-stack option. Good Luck.

I do. I have Kahr 380 and a KelTec 9mm that seem to bind up with full capacity mags and one in the chamber. Both work fine otherwise.

I carry a J frame snub 5 shot... or I carry a 1911 full size SS.. or my Pro Carry, sometimes an EAA Witness 10mm full size with 14 in the mag..

I take long walks with each one and find them a non issue for comfort.

On some days I'll have the 1911 full size in AIWB, a NAA sidewinder in my left front pocket and my Mdl.60 in my back pocket..probably 5 pounds of iron and ammo...all good

For 7+ years my EDC was a Glock 29 and it uses a 10-rd magazine which I chose to carry at 9+1 but it wasn't due to weight, it was due to the fact that it was irrationally difficult to seat a fully loaded magazine in to the pistol with the slide locked forward in full battery. Yes, it could be done, but not easily, and when I considered that the Glock uses a plastic body magazine AND a plastic magazine catch as well, I just came to my own conclusion and elected to keep the magazine at 9 rounds plus one in the chamber.

The magazine with just 9 in it was night & day difference to seat.

My current EDC doesn't exhibit similar tendencies so it gets carried at max capacity plus 1.

No. I carry what the firearm or magazine is rated for.

I don't use the "+1" so all my full mags are downloaded by one when chambered.

I fill the mag, rack one in and am done with it. This isn't done for weight savings, nor am I worried about being a round short. It's done because it's simple and takes stress off the mag spring.

Ps> My 5 shot snubbies are always carried chock full :-)

Most times I carry a Kahr P-9 with an 8-round capacity. I would not feel unprepared if I carried my Glock 19 with the NY legal 10-round magazine even though the gun can hold up to 33 rounds depending on magazine selected. I remind myself that even at 10 rounds, that's still four more than I carried in my revolvers before we transitioned to autoloaders.

I see no difference in you carrying 10+1 in your PCR vs 8+1 in a Shield. You do what you’re comfortable with, nobody else matters as you’re not carrying for their defense.

Carry weight is a big issue for me too so I go w/a no-lock 340PD. Having survived three deadly force confrontations, one where I ran out of ammo, I know how important it is to have enough for the fight that’s coming. If I could carry a modern hi capacity auto loader I would, but I’m not a cop anymore so it’s either a superlight J frame or nothing.

Uh, no. If weight was that much of an issue I'd find a lighter gun rather than use that kind of specious logic.

You might try going to a polymer framed gun? A Glock 19 for instance weighs 1/2 lb less than your CZ.

And 10 rounds of 9mm is still twice what a j-frame holds. So...I think you're fine there.

But I also find it's generally pretty smart to download double stack magazines by one, always. Most people especially under stress have a hard time seating a full magazine against a closed slide or closed bolt. So my double stack mags are always missing one round, so that I can always get them seated in a tactical reload situation. Bit disconcerting to fire that one round and then have the mag fall out.

My husband and I both EDC the PCR, and we would carry it if it only held 10 rounds, but a Galco gun belt and Cloak Tuck 3 holster allows comfortable enough IWB carry for our pace of life, fully loaded.

I find myself rearranging the stuff I'm carrying in my pockets and or belt until I feel BALANCED. This practice harkens back to those days I wore a loaded duty belt or PC rig.

After carrying an m19 revolver for over 33 years, I'm AOK with carrying fewer rounds in the pistol when there is a spare or two available for counterbalance and emergencies. It is your comfort zone that matters.

Exclamation Whut! No Slingshots?!

NO.

As a matter of fact, I am replacing my 5-shot J-frame with a 6-shot.

Oh yeah, I also put away my marble sling-shot because it was too heavy and trying to pull down my jeans showing off my "draww'zzz......"

WHY ???? I see no reason to carry less then a full mag .. in fact I carry a spare mag on weak side ..

My Beretta PX 4 is 13+1 so I carry a minimum of 27 rounds and when I cross the river even more ..

If you want something lighter go to a smaller sized weapon ..
something like the Sig 238 in 38 or Sigs 938 in 9mm ..

Another thing you may try is to move your holster 3 or 4 inchs from its present position .. I have found a certain position about 4:30 bothers me but moving it to 5:30 ended the discomfort ..

I have a few Browning HiPower mags that hold 15 rounds but rattle like a can full of marbles unless I download to 14. So, I carry HiPowers with 14 rounds in my 15-round mags.

If I carried a full size gun I would carry it fully loaded. Since I am in a 10rd state, I only get 10 so carry a suitable pistol. I am also generally a spare mag guys as well.

I'm a holster maker myself, so my options are limitless regarding carry.

I wouldn't question the judgment of anyone who decided, on the basis of actual experimentation, to carry less than a full load, but my own experience does not support such a decision. It has been many years since I carried a Para-Ord, but it seemed to me not different from any other 1911 design, even with a full load and two full mags on the other side.

I believe that the main variable, aside from weight, is the stiffness of the belt. I recommend thebeltman.net , but there are others.

Now, at 73, I sometimes find a steel Model 15 troublesome after a number of weeks, to the point of having a phantom gun in place for a few days after it has been replaced by my aluminum Model 12 in a pocket.

I would check belt quality first, but if weight really matters, don't even bother asking anyone else what he or she thinks.

No, never. I don't see the point of having a 10- or 13-round magazine and not utilizing its full capacity. Plus one in the chamber.

Wow, some here are pretty harsh on the O.P. His reasoning for doing what he is doing is sound. To cut weight on a firearm that he is, I assume, proficient with and comfortable carrying with that number of rounds. My answer is no, I don't. However, moving to a smaller gun to get to the same mag capacity, as some suggest, answers the lower weight problem; but, it is a completely different feel, I assume, than that provided him by using his current gun of choice. Some of you hammering him/making light of him seem to be saying that you would be O.K. if he moved to a j-frame that holds 5 rounds; but, you feel he is being absurd by removing rounds (still carrying more than the j-frame) to save weight while remaining proficient and familiar.

I have a 3913NL that is 2.6 oz. lighter than my CZ, but I'm nowhere near as accurate with it as I am with the CZ.

I use a proper gun belt and I notice the slight increase in weight from carrying my Shield 45 around vs my Shield 9mm, it’s a slight difference but noticeable.

That may be the worst way to save weight that I've ever heard. Buy better gear so that the weight is distributed better and carries more comfortably or find a lighter gun.

Short answer NO. If I wanted less weight or less capacity, I would carry a different firearm.

;140074670]Does anyone else routinely carry fewer rounds than the max. capacity of your magazine in order to avoid excess weight?
My CZ 75D PCR is a very pleasant semi-auto to carry around on my belt, but if I load it full-up with 147 gr ammo it becomes a brick. I've lately been carrying it with only 10 rounds and find it much more pleasant to get along with. I may even try stepping down to 115 gr. bullets to see how much more that helps.[/QUOTE]

"Do you ever carry less than magazine capacity of your magazine in order to avoid excess weight?"

No. Should I? Maybe I should I drill holes in my barrel in order to avoid excess recoil?

I could avoid both if I carried a squirrel pistol instead of major caliber.

No. I have although experimented with different methods of carry and rigs to best accommodate my needs.
I opt to use the full potential of the sidearm I am carrying.

if folks are saying that a 5 or 6 shot snubbie is enough, why wouldn't 10 rounds be enough?
When I carried a 1911a1 in the army and after, 8 rounds was always plenty, with a spare mag. I think the 18 round crowd is far too vocal. I mean jessieall - how many rounds are you planning on throwing at the bad guys? If you need to shoot your entire magazine (and you probably will anyway), then where are those rounds going?

Seriously?

You pack a 20+ oz pistol and worry about the weight of a round or two... I carry nothing less than full capacity. If it's too much for you, buy a lighter gun. If it's not reliable, buy a different gun or make it reliable.

The CZ-75 is a great gun, but it's not a light gun. Trying to save weight by carrying fewer life-saving rounds is frankly silly IMNSHO.

You should only carry one round because that is all a cool headed marksman needs.

Never less than full capacity. I mostly carry Glock 19s (in the summer months its a 442), and when I do I carry a full magazine +1 in the chamber.

I went from a full size Colt 1911 to a Colt Commander to a LW Kimber Custom Compact (Officer size frame and 4" Bbl.) The full and Commander size Colt's with steel frames FINALLY made me surrender to the fact that I'm getting older and need to get some of this weight off my belt. After 20 years of a full size steel frame 1911 then 5 years of a Commander carried IWB it got to be more of a pain in the hip than a pain in the ***.

Sorry, Brother, been around firearms for 40+ years, never heard of this one.
My own experience regarding number of rounds was during semi-auto training at work, we were told to remove and top off our mag after chambering a round in the gun. I still do it.
The place to "lose weight" is a smaller gun or an alloy frame vs. steel if you have that option. IMO, don't intentionally "cripple" your firearm by essentially making it less of a gun than it was designed to be.

I strongly disagree with the people who are badmouthing the OP. While I myself do sort of wonder just how much weight is being saved by a few cartridges, the end result is to be judged by the OP, not by me or other posters here.

As far as buying a lighter gun, that is ridiculous. IF he can achieve what he wants by downloading, why should he buy a gun he doesn't want? Of course, a lighter gun is a possibility, but it has many drawbacks, and the OP is in a better position to choose than we are.

I realize that the original post did invite opinions, but we could lighten up a little.

It really isn't though. A G17 feels like a G19. A full size 1911 vs alloy Comm. Your ability with any platform is a matter of practice. At most you are shedding 3-4oz, hardly worth the trade off imo.
I am a 1911 guy, but switched to a G26 for EDC for various reasons. It only took me a 4 weekends to get as competent with a totally diff platform.

I say load the mags to whatever floats your boat. It's a personal decision, plain and simple.

It only seems foolish because you haven't thought outside your own little bubble.

When I do long day-hikes or backpacking trips deep into the wilderness areas, my G20SF is usually only carrying 10 rounds in the 15 round mag. The weight saved is pretty minimal but it's weight saved. Lugging a heavy pack through steep terrain sounds easy from the armchair, but being nine hours deep into the wilderness, without even trails to help, is a lot tougher than most realize.

Yet that isnt the question. I've packed 100# of meat 5-6m at 6-7000 ft. I left my 8# rifle at the truck & carried a 2# pistol instead to save 6#. I didnt carry the rifle with a single rd to save 3-4oz.
Shedding 3-4oz for daily carry makes little sense when swithing to a slightly smaller platfrom would shed more for the same ammo cap or even more rds.
