Default What would you do?

I work for a Manufacturing Plant that has around 100 employees. Today while I was talking to a guy about adding more security cameras in his Dept., he said " If someone brings a gun in, your not going to to see it away. I mean I carry and you can't tell I am" while he was saying "I carry" he reached around to his 4 o'clock. I thought he was going to show me. At first I thought he was full of it, but I can clearly see it printing now.

Being a gun guy who believes in being able to conceal carry I'm not sure what to do. Do I just forget about it, do I tell someone, do u talk to him about it. Our employer has a no gun policy. I carry from time to time, but never to work. Not sure what to do. What would you do?

Nothing unless it was specifically my job to enforce the policy. Nobody likes a snitch.

Default IDIOT!

Tell him, thanks for the bag of do do you just dropped in my lap. He did you no favors. With a no gun policy, I'd say do whatever you feel is right & don't look back. IT POSSIBLY could be a setup/test??? Tough decision but CYA first, IMO you don't owe him anything. RU willing to get in trouble for for this clown? This seems like the "look at me" type that shouldn't be CCing in the first place. You could tell him (I suppose) That never happened, & if it does again I'm gonna rat. CONCEALED MEANS CONCEALED! YES I "MAY" carry where I shouldn't, but I sure wouldn't brag about it or show people.

The real problem is when he is found out, and he will be, will you be in trouble and if so, is this a termination offense for you? Also, if you are management you’re obligated to enforce the rules. This is a real mess, this guy did not do you any favors!

As someone who has carried at work, I'd mind my own business. What would be your rational to tell?

Maybe he goes on a shooting spree. Does he seem stable? He sure don't seem too bright. If he can't keep his own secret, he's a fool to believe that you will keep his for him.

As long as he's a squared-away dude, I'd mind my own beeswax and know that if some maniac comes in to your office hopefully that guy's got the same shift as you that day.

Depends. If you are his boss I would remind him of company policy and insist he adheres to it. If he is just a coworker, I would put him on my list of people I keep an eye on, but not turn him in.

It seems to be a risk he’s willing to take, and one you aren’t. Just act like it never happened and hope you never need this guy to save your life.

You did not see the gun right? Mind your own business. If he gets himself in trouble you could claim that you didn’t know what he was talking about.

And I would not discuss guns at work.

All depends on what your company policy is on ratting people out....many companies have a policy that says you are required to report any violation of company rules to them or run the risk yourself of being disciplined or even terminated. If like Texas the company can also post their building as not allowing firearms by a licensed individual he would then also be breaking the law. And how do you know he is even licensed to carry......I would let him know you are going to rat him out per company policy if that is the case, giving him time to put his gun in the car or no longer bring it to work and then I would follow company policy and report the exchange to the HR nazis, who just love enforcing rules or to your supervisor. I would make no statements that were not factual or even based on your gun savvy, like I saw it’s imprint....simply report what he said and actually saw or did not see......unfortunately failing to follow your company policy puts you at risk should the personnel office police find out what you know. Your only duty is to protecting yourself and your livelihood. But if that is not an issue and you can take that risk or find a new job easily enough then I say forget about it, one day someone else will narc him out since he is not smart enough to know when to keep it in his pants.

Although it was foolish of him to show you he was probably just trying to say hey man I'm one of you . He has the legal right to carry a firearm concealed evidently so I wouldn't worry much about it . If someone else reports him and more than likely they will I f asked I would deny knowing .i hope you atent posting this on your work computer .

Default MYOB???

TOO LATE, He made it your business when he gave away his own secret. You have no loyalty to him worth losing your job over. I doubt you will be the only 1 he shows off to & agree it's just a matter of time before he is outed, if it isn't some kind of corporate compliance trick. I know, it's a cynical way to think, but such is the world we live in.

First off, your co-worker should not have told you he carried.

Secondly, unless you see this person as a potential threat, Just forget about it.

It takes a lot of time and energy to mind other folks business.

Sue your company for emotional damages? Yeah, that’s what I would do.

I would shut-up, but that sort of behavior - flaunting company gun rules - sullies all of our reputations. If you two are not close, imagine how many others he has told. Dunderhead alert, I hope he doesn’t have a family depending on his paycheck.

I wouldn't care what the company policy is, I'd mind my own business if you know him to be a stable employee. If you didn't truly see a firearm, he could just be bluffing anyway, hoping you'll snitch.

About the best thing you could do, if he is a friend of yours, is to have one more conversation with him to determine if he is aware of the company policy and to let him know if he is found out he probably could lose his job.......let him know his secret is safe with you............then forget it........

Nice guy put you in a bad spot......................unless I actually saw the gun...my response if it ever comes up....

"I never saw a gun... I thought he was joking around."

I'ld just drop it. On another note, this guy violated one of my personal tenants. Nobody needs to know I carry. Jeez. He could have made the same point by just saying "you would not even know if I were carrying" and left it at that. On even another note, I am personally honest almost to a fault. However, if I were in your shoes and I were ever confronted about this conversation by the empolyer, I would say that the quote above is exactly what he said and I would have a clear conscience about that "lie".

Through the years i have worked with many different people, and only a couple qualified to me as someone I would have turned in if they had had the same conversation with me.

I know of at least one major corporation that has a strict no firearm policy, but has a trained and designated employee who is armed (concealed) with a Sig 229 in .40S&W with two spare mags. Only a few top executives know about this employee.

The management is trying to limit liability, but recognizes there is a need for protection should a nut penetrate the perimeter security.

I don't know the point you are trying to make and I'm not trying to be argumentative; but, there is a huge difference between the below two statements:
1) Our employer has a no gun policy. (as stated by OP and quoted)
and
2) Our employer has no gun policy.

The use of the word "a" in the OPs first post conveys that the employer prohibits guns in the workplace.

There are a lot of assumptions made here. The guy doesn't appear to be flaunting or displaying. I imagine he told you in confidence otherwise you would never have known. This is a difficult decision. Every time there is an incident we all say, "It wouldn't have happened if someone had been carrying." We don't know the circumstances in this situation at this plant. He obviously feels the need for self-protection. We don't know anything at all about the man, his job responsibilities, etc.. Is he the manager of his dept.? Why else would you have discussed cameras with him?

We do always say that, and I firmly believe it, but here's the rub: We have also heard multiple instances of an employee who , carrying in conflict with company policy, saves his life or another's with said firearm, and is promptly fired.

People make choices, choices have consequences . . .

Put me in the "You did not see a firearm" column. What he said and what you know are two different things. You may have seen something other than a firearm. (BB or pellet gun).

I would be very cautious regarding this gentleman.

You are probably not the only person he has shared this with and ultimately will provide enough rope.

If there is any possibility of misuse or danger, you owe him nothing.

You did not ask for this situation, but you are the only one to decide your course of action.

I hope you find this helpful.

This is what they/I did ..

Long time Union Rep in a larger manufacturing plant .. with several in the area for this Company .. After Union meetings reps in the area I worked would meet over a beer and lunch and discuss things happening in our area's ..

One Rep brought up a man that was seen with a pistol in shop .. The company's no gun's no ammo policy had been upheld in the past in firings .. This was 1997 long before Illinois had conceal carry ..

Vote was running 50-50 till it was brought up the guys ex was shacking with another employee that many didn't know about ..

The vote then turn ..
The following Monday the employee was told if we saw him with the pistol in the building or parking lot he would be turned in ..

It was done for the safety of all workers .. The man was transferred to another unit shortly afterwards and no longer worked in the plant we did .. Was he comp templating an action ?? We don't know but we all felt in this instance we had done the right thing ..

So you really need to know ALL the facts and whether the man has a motive to carry there ..

We had almost voted not to say anything ..

First post and nothing since. I vote this is a troll thread. Still, it's a good conversation to have.

In my opinion, this is not a simple "do or do not" situation. There are levels of action.

Nobody likes a snitch. I would not "rat" on anyone unless my life were in danger. That doesn't mean I do nothing. I would have a private conversation with him. I would first make sure he was aware of the no guns policy. If he was, I would tell him not to mention it to me anymore and that it was his business. If I felt he was a danger, then it would be time to take it to the next level.

Moreover, people who go out of their way to announce that they're carrying make me nervous. The whole idea to be be covert with a concealed gun. In this case, the OP never noticed he was carrying until he was told. As far as I'm concerned, it couldn't have been printing all that much. The guy with the gun should never have said anything. Announcing that you have a concealed gun is just trying to be macho. I'll bet he can shoot the bad guy in the eye while running too.

I'd keep my nose on my face, and carry my own.

I think it depends on your position there.
As others have said, if it's not your job to enforce rules, then don't enforce rules.
My employer has a "no guns" policy on their property, I know at least one employee that carries to work (no, not me). As far as I'm concerned it's our little secret.
If I were management I would tell him to immediately stop, take it home and don't bring it back, then I would completely forget about it and not pay too much attention to him after that (if you get what I'm saying).
And this is where it gets personal, if the employee is a wackadoodle or seems unhinged I would probably say something to management or at least make known to someone of more authority.

You can truthfully say you never saw a gun. You can untruthfully say th conversation never happened, if need be.

Still not a bad discussion to have, here's my response

You really haven't given us enough information to go on. How well do you know this guy? Is he someone who you would be concerned about having a gun at work? When he told you he was carrying were there any witnesses?

If there's no concern MYOB. If he showed you he's shown others and sooner or later he'll get caught and walked out. WHEN that happens IF HR comes to you deny everything. "He never showed ME any gun."

OTOH if there's ANY concern then you should report him. If your company has a suggestion box type up a report and put it in there.

Out of 100 or so employees and you think he's the only one carrying? Wonder how many are in the parking lot on any given day? The no firearms is usually a company CYA policy.... don't ask, don't tell is more like it. Someone reported this same matter at a 200 plus employee machine shop. A bulletin was issued reminding everyone of the policy while the name of the snitch' quickly circulated...

I believe in Alabama a law was passed that a lawful gun inside your car on company property is legally your private property....
based on the right of protection traveling to and from work.

Two words, Liability Insurance.

The company owns the land the car is parked on. They can tell you where to park if they want and the vehicle may even be subject to search.
