I have some 5.11 shorts, I think I paid $40 at their retail store. They’re pretty nice, a lot more durable that the Magellan stuff from Academy. I also wear an Operator belt, very nice for carry. The 5.11 shorts are inconspicuous.

I wear jeans to work & cargos most of my non-working hours. My “off-duty” belt is Wilderness Instructor and near identical to my 5.11 belt. This allows me to carry the same gun same place all the time, no need to switch to a pocket gun.

The way I see it, stuff that’s gonna last 5x as long is worth 2x the price.

They opened a 5.11 store a few months back & just recently a Duluth Trading Company.

How is the fit of these pants of which you speak? So many clothes are made in Bangladesh or Indonesia where the folk are smaller and I find them quite uncomfortable .The distance from low waist to crotch seems shorter than needed and too tight for your “package”. I recently bought “ball room jeans” and these seem OK but heavy.Recent Carhart “relaxed fit “ jeans were a little snug.
A couple of years ago I found kaiki trousers made as those of WWII and they were really roomy, deep pockets of heavy cloth and button fly to avoid zipper breakage. No extra pockets however.

I usually wear a pink polo, with a sweater tied around my neck when I wear my 5.11's
Keeps folks guessing.

I just like them for work because they are comfortable, practical, durable, and easy care with lots of pockets. Not making a statement, no one has ever asked me about them, or given a second look. Have encountered a few people who may have been carrying but not my business to inquire, nor to disclose. I talk business when doing business, nothing more or less.

I have a couple pairs of Propper Genuine Gear, 60/40 ripstop.
Been wearing them a few years, one pair reserved for hot day jobs when I need long pants.
Not hard to find online for under $25 and sized true to fit.
Like Mainsail I remove the Velcro on some of the pockets.
Great value for the price, I just don't need pockets for knee pads.

Default IF YOU WANT TO BE THE TIN MAN.

CC FILSON DOUBLE TIN pants/bibs/jackets/hats, Impervious to any thorns/skeeters I've ever come across. Snakes/birdshot, maybe??? I never tested them for that. A great way to have a heat stroke however.

Lots of truth paranoia here. Yes, I am armed, well armed with quality handguns and premium ammo. How can I afford that? I got my 5.11 pants for $9.99!!
Fixed it for you.

Great price. They sell 511 in the BX/PX but they're way too expensive for what they are. TruSpec fit me better anyway.

Have you read all the posts in this thread?

One person stated that he's been made because he was wearing 5.11s Muss Muggins and myself have both stated that we have identified people as armed because they were wearing 5.11s.

The El Paso County Sheriff's department (among others nation wde) issue 5.11s as a Plain Clothes uniform. Do you think they might know what they are when they see them?

So you can call it paranoid if you want but there are people out there who recognize 5.11s when they see them and know that they are clothing of choice for quite a few "gun" people.

The only 5.11 pants that I have direct experience with are the Royal Robbins ones.

I liked them because they were all cotton and they were comfortable. I thought that strap thing was the best thing since sliced bread because losing the site keys was grounds for immediate termination. So I hung the key ring on that.

I liked the front and back pockets. I could carry an M&P Shield in my back pocket in a DeSantis gunhide and it looked like a wallet. That magazine pocket on the front IMO was a waste of time and the cargo pockets seemed really small to me. Nothing fit in them but your cell phone or a handkerchief.

I wear Wrangler cargos now. They cost less than half what the 5.11 cost. The cargo pockets aren't the size of BDU cargo pockets but they're big enough to be useful and I really like that built-in phone pocket.

My "EDC" apart from work isn't much. I carry a Glock 19, a multi-tool and 2 reloads on my belt and cargo pants wouldn't change that one way or the other.

If I'm going out to walk the dogs or if I'm going someplace where I can't take my gun in with me I carry a glock 26 and 1 reload. And that fits in the pocket of the Wranglers. I'm not going to tell you that you can't see something in there but the shape of it is broken up and it's not so tight in the pocket that I can't get it in and out if I need to.

I always have my cell phone even if I never use it and that is right in the phone pocket. I always have a pocket knife I always have a flashlight I always have a handkerchief and I always have my wallet and keys. Handkerchief in one cargo pocket wallet in the other. Flashlights in one front pocket and pocket knife in the other. If I have the Glock in my front pocket then the knife goes in my cargo pocket. I don't carry anything in the rear pockets.

That's pretty much all I carry with me on any given day so I don't need a gazillion pockets.

i dont think most people would notice 511's from Levis. they are too involved with their smart phone staying "connected" . I know that i'm a minimalist ( read lazzy ) but IMHO if ya need that many pockets your carrying to much junk.

Made? So what? Are these people that are 'making' other people also getting false alarms, because a lot of unarmed people wear them as well. In fact, I would wager that more unarmed people are wearing tactical pants than are armed people.

So what happens to people that are 'made' as presumably armed? What did you do when you identified someone else as armed?

Have there been a series of shootings where the victim was wearing tactical looking trousers?

I don't understand what the problem is.

Unlike you I am not a radical open carrier. I don't go around trying to rub my armed status in people's face.

My only response to this thread has been to counter the idea that "no one notices those pants". I don't care if you want to wear them just don't tell me I'm paranoid when I correctly point out that people are going to recognize them and make assumptions because of them

In the post that you said was "paranoia" I stated (in different words) that wearing those pants is a tell and that there are people out there who will recognize your tells for what they are. That's a true statement so I don't understand you calling it "paranoia".

I don't care to advertise my business to random, unknown strangers. I'm not a very social person I don't want some random jackass walking up to me and asking "what ya pakin'?" because they find it amusing. I'd much rather you mind your own business and leave me alone and if you keep trying to push your way into my bubble I'll let you (and everyone else in earshot) know it. As a result I avoid wearing clothing that gives people a reason to take a second look at me.

Each to his own. Maybe 20 years ago, or more, I discovered that loose cotton pants, like Dockers, were both warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer than the jeans I was used to wearing.

However, I still didn't like carrying much of anything in the pockets, and continued to wear what most of y'all would call a shoot-me-first vest. Strangely enough, I never got shot, first or otherwise. AFAIK, only one person, a waiter or owner in a small kosher restaurant in Norfolk, Virginia, ever noticed it. He repeatedly said that it was worn by members of some Israeli "secret service" or some such. Not being Israeli, or ever actually issued a firearm by even the U. S. government, I didn't have much to add to his irrelevant observation. Other than that, I have been all up and down the east coast without much note being taken of where I prefer to have my pockets, which is where I won't sit on them.

I can hardly argue against trying out a $3 pair of pants, but I doubt that I have anything even remotely resembling cargo pants in my future.

BTW, if anyone has noticed that I occasionally post about what I carry in a pocket, this has mostly been since I lost about 25 pounds, without changing pants size.

I'm not a radical anything, nor do I rub anything in anyone's face. In fact, I only carry openly on rare occasion anymore. In any event, we were not discussing open carry but pants. Nice try with the straw-man argument though.

What does it matter if someone notices your pants (assuming for the sake of argument that anyone is that interested in anyone other than themselves).

Like I said, very few people are in any manner 'observant' of anyone around them. I'm not knocking you if you think they are, I just don't believe it's so.

Ok, maybe hyperbole, but worrying much over nothing is at least borderline paranoia, no?

Has this happened to you often? In over a decade of indifferent carry, it has never happened to me even once.

I was issued 5.11s when I was a police advisor in Afghanistan. Up until then, I was more of a Wrangler blue jean kinda guy. Since retiring from LE, I usually carry a .38 Colt Agent. It pocket carries very nicely in the 5.11s. I carry a speed loader in my strong side cargo pocket. I often have a point and shoot camera in a cargo pocket. My Benchmade auto knife is clipped in a strong side rear pocket.

My 5.11s usually last 7-8 years. Oh, I heard that the rear strap was for hanging a walkie/talkie.

One last observation: Men wear trousers, women wear pants. Seems like I remember a gunnery sergeant telling me that a long, long time ago.

However, like a lot of things, I've discovered something I like better; Tru-Spec 24/7 pants. The difference is the Tru-Spec pants have pockets that fit my stuff better. In the thigh pocket there is a divider. This allows me to carry a cell phone and a flash light without them banging into each other. Then they have a small pocket designed for a knife. Plus, they're less expensive than the 5.11 pants.

Are they better? Meh, it's all personal preference. No, I just like them.

Do they scream "He has a gun!"? No, I think that's just paranoia.

I bought a few pairs of 5.11 tactical pants. Wasn't a fan of the slash pockets.

I bought the Tru-Spec 24-7s (a lot cheaper) and love them. Wear them everyday both shorts and long pants. Nobody has said boo about them.

Cargo pants are sold everywhere so they no longer are in the domain of CCW'rs only.

My Wife on the other hand bought the $70 5.11s and like them. I can't get her to try the Tru-Specs, but not for any real reason.

I have a few sets of the 5.11 Defender-Flex jeans and khaki type pants. The slim fit are still roomy enough for IWB carry and they do not look "tactical." They can pass for regular pants. Two thumbs up.

I started with Royal Robbins in the mid 1990's, then went to 5.11's. I am still in 5.11's. I wear them for training, at the range, callouts, casual wear, and the worn out ones for yard work.

I will have been in LE for 20 years come February. In all that time, I've pretty much worn the 5.11 pants in various colors when off-duty. No one has ever came up to me and asked if I was "on the job" or if I was carrying. Do they think I was carrying? I don't know, I don't care.

If I wore them with black boots.....had a buzz cut hair style, then maybe I could see someone thinking........it's the fuzz!!! Around here, the pants alone don't get a second look.

I only have 2 pair of “tactical” pants, dark navy Elbecos, but I have worn plain ol’ black Dickies cargo pants for years with my uniform shirts, boots, and duty belt. With either type of pants I’ve carried at least one snubby in the cargo pockets. I’m certain no one ever noticed because I wear a 4 inch Model 686-6 on my duty belt. I’m retiring on the 17th, so we’ll see if people conflate tactical pants with gun carrying.
