I have a 45 in the bed stand. Of course the wife has to hear it and wake me up because I'm deaf. Then I hope it takes awhile before he finds the bedroom because my hands are numb from nerve impingement. Then it's awhile before I can actually open the drawer, find the pistol, and pick it up.

BUT I'M READY

I keep my Winchester 94 rifle loaded in my bedroom closet, along with my much beloved S&W 696, also loaded. I am more concerned about that darn mountain lion bothering my horse. In an emergency, I will grab the rifle, and I'm not going to bother putting on my pants. My place is about halfway between the little town of Minden, Nevada and Carson City. So if you ever see a man wearing only underwear, running around at night in the sage brush, and waving a rifle, that will be me.

When you think someone is trying to break in first step is call 911 and inform the dispatcher you’re armed. Then, if time allows, get everyone into a bedroom (or safe room) and lock the door. If the suspect(s) gain entry inform them you’re armed and police are on the way. Bottom line is confront only as a last resort.

Let your wife pick what SHE likes to shoot, have it in HER nightstand, and have her let you sleep in. You obviously need your rest!

First line of defense would be a 70 pound unfriendly GSD (German Shepard Dog) .. If you get by her its all out war .. and am sure they would be looking to harm us !!

2nd line if they would get by Eko would be either 14 rounds of 9mm in my Beretta PX-4 Sub Compact or my Sig P229 Legion in 40 .. several others with in reach including an unloaded AR-15 with a 30 round mag laying beside it ..

Wife would be calling 911 huddled behind a brick chimney shielding her from gunfire ....

Well after all my responses to this post TOM the Moderator issued me an Inaction as a cross post
IMO after many responses as well as being a PAYING member Tom should have at least has the common sense to respond in a PM
Either way --- IT WAS AN OPEN QUESTION IN THE Lounge
I would like this removed as well as a written response about the error in his TOMS Listing and INFRACTION to a post the has given several likes

I'll say that ugly word. My new bedside and house gun is a Glock 22 with night sites and the +2 mag baseplates, stoked with 17 rounds of Federal HST. It will replace my duty H&K that has done bedside duty for several years since my kids have become adults and moved out.

I am very fond of my Smith revolvers, but bought the Glock for capacity, and .357 mag power, without the blinding flash and indoor muzzle blast.

How about a Gen 5 Glock 19 with an attached light? A cell phone is a handy gadget to have in these circumstances.

S&W 64-4 with hbwc and a SD mod2 in .40 cal with 2 12 rd mags are in my quick access picture frame. I have a unique floor plan where two of my daughters are on the other side of the front door so a 410 with an 18” barrel and a pistol grip is also in my room. Luckily their room was an addition in what used to be the carport so it is solid concrete filled brick except for their door. My wife dislikes the placement of their bed but lost that argument when I pointed out 8” of wall my HD rounds can’t go through. I will say, no matter what you have on/in your nightstand, run through what your plan is with dry fire a few times. In my case I have to get to my girls so I have to exit the room, go down a 15’ hallway and through the great room. Practice using your light know your corners and be safe. Oh, make sure whatever you have next to you had a flashlight next to it, don’t be “that guy” that shoots your daughters boyfriend that she snuck into the house because your night sights are good enough.

I like my 686+ 3" for my nightstand gun. I feel that a revolvers shape is easier to grab when half asleep than a semi auto. And simpler operation make be better as well.
Next is the 870p just 10 ft away in the closet, and a glock 17 with 3 extra mags, flashlight. Med kit and knife in small shoulder bag hanging in closet. Next is a colt 6920 with 6 mags ready to rock in roll.
Both cars have g19's in them.
Everything else is in safe, or in stages of cleaning or mod'ing and unloaded.

I usually keep my EDC 9mm Shield close by since already loaded or M65 with .38 spl 158 gr JHP. I live in a apartment and low risk of home invasion but feel vulnerable leaving out early a.m. when dark.

Full size Sig 250 w flashlight attached. DA only trigger that is almost as good as a S&W revolver. 17 round mag. Double strike capability. Pistol fits me well. I pick it over a 1911 because I shoot it better w 1 hand. If I have to look for bumps in the night I'll have a spotlight in my nonshooting hand even if the pistol has a light. Spotlight is a lot brighter and I don't have to point a gun to light something up.

A recent uninvited guest in my backyard would tell you that that spotlight is blinding up close. Fortunately he kept backing up until he was gone. I would have been justified in shooting but am glad I didn't have to shoot. At one point my 12 year old son and the family Lab were between the intruder and me. My son wouldnt let go of the dog and i had to get around them so that i was between son and the intruder. My son now knows not to open the door when the Lab is growling in the middle of the night.

The young man was stumbling drunk and looking to get out of the weather. I'm not small but this guy was both bigger and a whole lot younger than me. I'm a worn 57 and my guess is that the guy was in his early 20s. Neither of us had on a shirt and while I'm not chubby I don't have 6 pack abs like the intruder did. Also he had about 4 inches on me. Big young strong and scary. While I believe he meant no harm he was 1 step away from getting shot before he started backing up due to me yelling at him and being lit up by the spotlight in his eyes. I doubt he ever saw the pistol in my hand. I was holding pistol in a retention position w my weak hand holding the light toward his face. Police found him the next morning passed out in a neighbors unlocked car.

Takeaway is if he had been on the front porch and been compliant to commands I'd probably told him to sit down on the porch and made him some coffee to sober and warm up. He was drunk and wet and we don't have cab service. Inside the backyard fence muttering incoherently while sticking his hand out like he wanted to shake hands (Or make a grab to get hold of me) he almost got shot. Frankly I'm glad I didn't have to shoot him.

I'm single so I sleep with at least one or two guns next to my pillow. 1 revolver, 1 semi, the shotgun sits in the corner within' reach from bed.

So it's a matter of when I realize it's a real threat, which is with me.

I have no intention of hunting an invader in the dark. I will fort up behind the bed with the MP9 pointed at the door and will make a phone call. With luck, the invader will trip over the dog and hurt himself.

I don't know what I'd want but what I'd have is either a Glock 19 or a Glock 26. Which ever I carried that day.

I'd want super powers. Impervious to bullets and the superhuman strength would be good ones to start.

But since you can't always have what you want, a 44 special would probably be what I ended up with. Big bullets without excessive recoil or muzzle blast.

Here is another question to ponder...

"So it's 3PM in the afternoon and you don't hear the break-in because you are across town busy at work. What do you do?".

What I am getting at is many break-in's actually occur during the daytime when the thieves know people may not be at home. They could've been casing your place for days and watching when people are coming and going.

In this case no firearm will help you. What will help is a good security system, some cameras, perhaps a dog and a really large and heavy gun safe.

I know it's not nearly as romantic or exciting as the proverbial "Guy breaks in at 3AM so I rack my 12ga. pump and take him out" scenario but it's the truth.

I'm much more comfortable since I added this option to my security system.

I’m retiring on Friday, so your question is quite relevant. Until then, the intruder would deal with a very protective 65 lb black Lab mix and my wife with her 4 inch S&W Model 681 equipped with Crimson Trace grips.

I carry a revolver, because I can see to aim. In a dark house, middle of the night I'll use the beretta 92 and put rounds down range. We're in a ranch house and our room is at the end of the hall. Only ones here are me, wifey and the dogs. Dog will be raising hell, if it gets quiet I guess the wifey will check on them.

I have a gun in every room. Which ever room my wife or I am in, that is the go to gun. We are not going to be victims.

I guess even claymores can be dumbed down. Lol

Back to the OP, a Ruger SR9, because that's my bedroom gun. I can pick up others, as I go thru the house.

I am a firm believer in the KISS principle and at 3 AM I do NOT want to have to think much. When the alarm went off last April and I thought I had yard invaders in an outbuilding I went outside with two big, black dogs and this:

Nobody got shot, or dog bitten, I needed the fire department and that was that.

Presently, that gun is stored elsewhere post-fire, but this one is always around, sometimes EDC, sometimes just there at night when I need it:

Both personify KISS in the middle of the night when things go awry.....

I would reach for my 649-2 which has Crimson Trace laser grips. I also have a very bright light, both the gun and light are at instant reach from my bed. I would, first, immediately call 911 and then wait in my bedroom and watch for shadows in the hallway. At first sight I would use the bright light and put the red dot on them if they are not the police that I have called. Shooting would be the very last resort after ID, and numerous warnings. Let's hope it never happens.

Default "Oh, How Sad"

After reading this sad thread, I am appalled, at what will most likely take place if many of this forum's members' homes, are actually broken into, by a "Home Invader". It amazes me, the number of our members that actually believe, that a 911 call, would insure their safety, in a break in of their home, or that the police, are obligated to come, and protect them. The protection of our home, is provided in this way, I have a good alarm system, and have strategically placed firearms in several places in the house, my wife is trained in the use of them, and we are absolutely, willing, and able to use them, if need be. My 911 call will be made, "after", we have stopped any attempted break in, of our home. I don't advocate this system to others, but merely tell how it's done at our house. Pardon my long winded rant, but this is my 2¢ worth on this matter.

First is the 16 gauge loaded with Federal #1 Buck. The mighty purple shell!!

After that it's whatever I stumble onto when searching for it.

Now that is cruel and unusual punishment...on the intruder. If my wife got ahold of the bad guy, I may just feel sorry enough for him to help him escape.

I think you may have posted this in the wrong thread.

I went back and carefully read all the posts before yours, and NOBODY said that they "actually believe, that a 911 call, would insure their safety, in a break in of their home, or that the police, are obligated to come, and protect them."[sic]

A few folks mentioned putting a call into 911, but where you got the rest of that is a mystery, unless it was from another thread.

Whatever I am carrying that day does night duty next to the bed affixed to whatever pants I was wearing.
Being recently habitually lazy while off duty, it has lately been a airweight 442 five-shooter .38.
Otherwise, it is either a K frame .38/.357 or my issued Gen 4 Glock 23.
